Later, 4 Risso's popped out of the fog - probably more in distance but we saw 4 As I was talking to a passenger I saw a larger all gray dolphin jump completely out of the water (almost directly over her head) and I think I was the only one to see it! By process of elimination it must have been an offshore bottlenose. It jumped quite high, only once, and never saw it or any others again but we didn't stop. We went way out west into the 120 zone to try and escape the fog but that didn't work. Late in the day we finally got whales - 2 Gray Whales just inside the north entrance to the SCI / SRI gap They were friendly grays and stayed closer to the boat than any other grays I have seen. We saw many breathing cycles, lots of flukes and great looks. For 1 breathing cycle the sun popped through and it was amazing to see the sun spotlighting the flukes of the 2 whales as they descended. We stayed a while and left the gap late and got back close to 3:15pm but all of the passengers were thrilled with the amazing sightings. Cheers and Happy New Year! First part of trip was some heavy fog. About a mile from the gap we had clear skies and spotted our first 2 whales. It appeared that there were mating. They were rolling over each other. Then they sped off at about 5 miles an hour. Guess they wanted to be alone. We traveled the back side of Anacapa and spotted a very friendly whale that gave us some great fluke shots. All aboard were very pleased. 2nd trip 20 risso dolphin 2 gray whales Another full boat. Spotted the Risso's. They gave us a good show. Towards the end of the trip we saw 2 spouts and tried to watch the whales, 1 sort of disappeared and the other one just started to snorkel. We watch it for awhile and had to head home inthe thick fog. Some teens were worried that the captain was lost because he was blowing the horn. After explaining why the horn was used and that the captain had radar they seem happy that we were not lost. The history of the ship wrecked Del Rio , lying in Frenchy's Cove off Anacapa Island adds a P.S. to the story. As a purse seiner owned in part by my father, it often fished sardines in the San Francisco area. According to my father, and other crew members, the Del Rio was often filled with a full load of sardines caught INSIDE SF BAY prior to WWII. So, there was an ample food source for porpoise there. In late 1940 my father, and the other two owners, sold the Del Rio to the US Navy. Commissioned as the AMc 19 Grosbeak. She tended the submarine net deployed at the Golden Gate and served as a minesweeper during the entire war in the Bay area. My father, and many of the Del Rio's crew went on to serve on US Navy, US Coast Guard, or merchant marine vessels during WWII. The Navy sold the Del Rio back to its original owners in 1945. By the time the Del Rio caught fire and sunk off Anacapa in 1952, with 70 ton of sardines aboard, my father had sold his share of ownership. To get a vivid account of the original marine health of the San Francisco Bay, read Jack London's "Tales of the Fish Patrol". It covers a period of time in the very early 1900s when Jack London, and his fishing vessel, worked at patrolling the entire SF Bay and Sacramento River Delta for the California Fish and Game. We had an extra drop off of passengers from the canceled Vanguard trip to AI due to swell in the cove. Carole Rosales (VC) and I (hike) were both on the 9:00 Island Adventure with Capt. Lee, Capt. Steve, able crew Andrea and Paige. Enroute we got a short glimpse of a gray whale that was shy and didn't seem to want us to see him/her, so it "snorkeled" passed us, but most got at least one view of the whale. The marine layer gave way to a glorious day on the island. I had 15 for a hike and Carole had 9 from the 13 passengers that the Islander dropped off before heading out on a whale watch. Carole is also hike certified, so she was able to take the late arrivers on a Cavern Point hike as well. Foxes were spied in the afternoon and on the way home, more whales. Folks had mentioned that they had seen several from the Potato Harbor bluff trail and we were able to get really good views and many flukes from three whales. Took us a while to figure out why they were staying in the same place, turns out there was some mating behavior going in, but in the glaring late afternoon sun it was difficult to detect. A few Risso's came by, but not close enough for good viewing. Then, amazingly near the rig line we sighted a minke, and really did get to see it, then another one nearer shore gave us some very good viewing. It was a fabulous day. Capt. Lee spotted some bottlenose inside the harbor, but I missed them. Carole and I signed up 5 junior rangers. It was a great day. As we crossed the channel, we missed the expected greetings of the Common Dolphins, but then Captain Mat spotted a single roaming Killer Whale about two mile of the coast of Santa Cruz Island. We were all hopeful to spot the Killer Whale's pod and fearful that any Killer Whales may have scared the Gray Whales far off the coastal waters. As we traveled onward, we spotted several small groups of 20 and 30 Risso's Dolphin intemixed with numerous curious sea lions. This was a wonderful sightling with close-in feeding activity. Some of the Risso's seemed to peer above the waves to catch eye-to-eye sightings with us. And a few Common Dolphin's finally came to greet us. As we were enjoying the minutes, suddenly Captain Mat pressed the throttle and we headed toward a large surface commotion of splashing and spraying. To everyone's hopeful expectations, gray whales came into sight: three gray whales "playing' on the surface, rolling, swimming on their backs and waving both pectoral flippers and tail flukes. Their activities were such a continuous frenzy we suspected that these were two males frolicking with a female. Towards the rear of the boat two more gray whales were also displaying playful courtship behaviors? Heading homeward we spotted two other gray whales and John was finally able to get clear photo shots of thedorsal spine for identification. A wonderful day for all. Capt. Mat pointed the Condor towards the SCI-SRI notch where recent trips had produced good sightings. Ditto today! The Dalls were spotted first, about 2/3 of the way out. Then the 5 grays, a mating pod it seemed, mixing a little travel with a little flirtation. These same Grays were seen again as the Condor left Painted Cave for home. They provided several great fluke shots for the photographers, but alas, not much of their dorsal areas for PID. Pardon the vagueness of my count on the Rissos and Commons. The first pod of Rissos was maybe about 20. But then, in the same location as recent trips, the sea was alive with Rissos, Commons, sea lions and birds lunching on squid. This activity covered a broad area rendering a more precise count beyond my abilities to estimate. Thanks to Capt. Mat with crew Denis and Matt, Bob Perry behind the serious cameras. Water was slight ripple to glass all day. Makes for a very nice ride. Both trips were loaded, did not get exact count, but folks form, Ontario, Canada, Washington, DC, NY, Fresno, Reseda, Ventura, Westlake, Northridge, Malibu and points beyond. A Cub Scout Pack from Simi Valley was on board on the afternoon run. Am: Our presentation given and the Islander on its way, we were out and into the channel, meeting the first megapod(1500) about mid channel, to the great delight of the folks, and the camera were rolling. They were all over the place, some jumping grabbing big air, moms and babies the whole thing. Nice. It took a little bit to come up with a Gray, but when we did it was off the north side of Anacapa after working the AI/SCI gap. Then it was three together, maybe a mating group hard to say, even though there was some side rolling, tough to make the certain call on that. But that was just fine for the folks who just enjoyed it and many firing off their cameras with this fine photo op. Many a nice fluke were given with ooos and ahhhs abound. PM: Similar start, presentation given, and we were again about mid channel with another megapod of the commons, this on about 2500, so the PM folks got similar treatment to their very delight. then the search was on for the grays. A small sail boat radioed in they they had see two near Platform Gail so we turned around and heeded to Gail. Yet a good search show no whales, so it was back out toward the AI/SCI gap, yet thignt was showing most any where. the afternoon was getting on, and the Cub Scouts were getting restless, because, for sure, we had "promised" to see the Whales and we had not seen any yet. Not finding any alone Anacapa, in his great wisdom, Capt Anthony decided to take us way east out of the channel. Time was closing in and it seemed we were heading for Malibu, in fact the folks from there thought, soon, we might be able to see their house. Well, we were well east but not that far, for sure, and wouldn't you know it, Master Whale Finder Captain Anthony scored again, three Grays heading east near the Navy's Pacific Missile Range Tracking station. So late as it was we stayed on with three getting many a good look, and many a fluke were offered up for the folks. Cameras again were rolling. AND, ? our Cub Scouts were delighted, very happy, and we were acquitted from our feared failure to produce Whales to see. Santa Barbara Island and Catalina were easily visible in the distance to the east from this position. Running late we headed back in and into another fine megapod of commons (1500). It never gets old. Captain Anthony, and crew of James and Joel did a fine job of it, both AM and PM, as did my intrepid fellow CINC Naturalist, Debbie Shelley (this time we were able to car pool, very cool) Ken Tatro Gentle winds, mellow seas, and always, ? a fresh breath of salty air, ... to ya. Sorry for the late report, this is for birds seen on Sunday's Condor Express trip. Take care, Bernardo Things are a little odd in the channel, birdwise. I can't remember ever seeing as few birds as during the passage to the west end of Santa Cruz Island on Sunday. I didn't see ten birds during the whole trip once we left the harbor until we arrived at less than a mile from the island. The squid induced feeding aggregation that included several hundred each Risso's dolphins, long-beaked common dolphins and California sea lions also included a good number of birds. As expected, Brandt's cormorant was the most abundant species; I chalked up 900 either sitting on the water of roosting on the island. There were also many pelagic cormorants, most in breeding plumage with big white flank patches and red faces. We don't see individuals in breeding plumage very long out there. The alcids were represented by eight Cassin's auklets, 16 common murres and seven rhinoceros auklets. I also saw five murrelets, most likely Xantus' murrelets, but I didn't get good enough looks to make sure. There were very few tubenoses. Only saw a handful of black-vented shearwaters near the island and none near the mainland. There was one short-tailed shearwater in the feeding flock and a beautiful white morph northern fulmar a couple of miles north of the cave. On the island I spotted two black oystercatchers and three common ravens and a red-tailed hawk was circling above the island. The complete list is below. All in all, everyone had a good time and a great trip. Larry Driscoll larry.driscoll at sbcglobal.net -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Trip: 1 Gray whale 2 pods of dolphins, ~ 500 Commons, & ~ 35 Bottle nose + few Commons tag-along 36 passengers from Reno, England, and many locals, Crew: Steve, Andrea, myself as Naturalist P.M. Trip: 3 Gray whales (one group of two & single Gray) 2 pods: ~ 1000 Common dolphins & 35 Bottle nose ~ 30 passengers from Oregon, Bakersfield, Mexico, Australia, and Ventura Our departure from the Ventura Harbor aboard the Islander was very dramatic for both trips. Swells of ~ 8-12 feet tested Captain Dave, who did a splendid job commanding the boat, to the delight and apprehension? of many passengers (they applauded). We encountered the Gray at 11:30 am around Eastern end of SCI. It was swimming slowly, just under the surface of the water, and gave us many great sightings of the knuckles along its dorsal ridge, as well as a great fluke/dive. The ~ 500 Common dolphins were very playful and the many children passengers were thrilled. Unfortunately, many adults got pretty motion sick. We saw the 2 Gray whales only half hour after leaving the harbor. These Grays were also swimming just below the surface and treated us to their dorsal ridge. One must have been pretty old because of the numerous and large barnacles on its body. We first encountered the small pod of Bottle nose just East of AI. Cptn. Dave treated us to the power of Scorpion Blow-hole, which I had never seen so active. Around 4 p.m., on our way back to harbor we encountered the single Gray, and then the large pod of Commons, which was very spread out. Only a few people got sick this time. Passengers were very grateful spending such a wonderful time out in the SB Channel. Thank you Andrea for your wonderful Narrative :) Maria G. These are tales of human experience and adventure often involving Basque characters, sailing and exploration, both historically prominent activities among Basques. She has recently finished a novel about Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo's 1542 voyage of discovery up the Mexico and California coast. About The Whaler's Forge, one of her novels, Dr. William Fitzhugh, Archaeological Curator of the Smithsonian Institution, says: "The activities of Basque whalers in early northeastern North America are the biggest historical secret of New World history. Yesterday , the Vanguard's morning trip out of Channel Islands Harbor was cancelled due to the unseasonal east winds. However, IPCO sent her out into a gorgeous afternoon on the channel with Jason at the helm, Paige in the Galley, and 18 very appreciative passengers aboard. In the Gap between Anacapa and Santa Cruz islands we saw Grays who fluked and breached, as well as Risso Dolphins who were not as shy as they are supposed to be. The sunbaked beaches and rocks on the backside of Anacapa had hundreds of California Sea Lions sprawling out to claim their tanning territory. Some Common Dolphin joined use for a brief time on the pleasant ride home. Luke, with his Australian accent, kept everyone aboard well informed with details about each species of the mammals we encountered. The sunset was beautiful as we entered the harbor. A great day had by all, most of whom were Californians, except for a Illinois couple who had never been on the ocean. Totals: 3 Grays; 12 Rissos; and about 100 Common Dolphin.? ? ? For your reference, this email contains information regarding a recent amendment to sanctuary overflight regulations. You may already be aware of the?existing?overflight regulations, however, please review the information below which will help you understand the reasons for the amendment. Also note there are allowed exemptions and permits and there will be some updates to FAA charts. Should you have any questions please feel free to contact me and I will forward them on to the appropriate person.? Regards, Shauna? On January 26,NOAA published a Final Rule in the Federal Register regarding an amendment to the existing overflight regulations in place at four west coast national marine sanctuaries: Channel Islands, Monterey Bay, Gulf of the Farallones, and Olympic Coast.? The Final Rule document is attached to this email.? The final rule does not create a new regulation but clarifies an existing overflight restriction (and which has been in place at CINMS since 1980).? The amendment standardizes the application of these existing regulations, which is an important first step that will lead to the printing of sanctuary regulations on aeronautical sectional charts.? Depiction on aeronautical charts will help raise greater awareness and increase compliance.? The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is a partner and is currently in the process of amending those charts that overlap sanctuary boundaries.? Once the sectional charts are updated, the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries will coordinate with the FAA to conduct outreach to pilots, airports, pilot associations and the media. The rule requires that motorized aircraft maintain certain minimum altitudes above specified locations within the boundaries of the listed sanctuaries (at CINMS, that area is within 1 nautical mile of the islands, below 1,000 feet) and states that failure to comply with these altitude limits is presumed to disturb marine mammals and seabirds and is a violation of sanctuary regulations.? Also know that at CINMS, current exceptions will remain in place.? This includes flights transporting persons or supplies to and from the islands; kelp survey flights; flights necessary to respond to an emergency threateninglife, property, or the environment; flights?necessary for valid law enforcement purposes in the Sanctuary; or flights authorized pursuant to a National Marine Sanctuary permit. -- Shauna Bingham Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary? 113 Harbor Way, Suite 150? At first from a distance, their blows were often, in sync and not looking like Grays at all, but they after a few surfaces, the spouts started forming hearts and realized they were definitely Grays. In the 14 years I have been whale watching out here, I have never seen a group that large and surfacing that often. It was amazing. We stayed with them for most of the trip. The last 20 minutes or so, they did split up and some went east and the other 4 we stayed with as they were continuing south off the backside of Anacapa. They were on the surface more than they were under the water diving. Lots and lots of tail flukes and at times they would do a partial roll. About 1000 Common Dolphins spread out joined in with the Grays. They were getting frisky too. One Gray Whale was also spotted behind us heading down the frontside of Anacapa Island while we were watching the group of 8. There were only about 25 people on board. Many out of town folks (Sweden, Chicago, Virginia, Florida to name a few). They all commented on how great and amazing encounter that was, despite the rough seas. No one was ill, so that was a blessing so they could all enjoy the scenery and wildlife. Thanks to Capt Dave, Danielle and Poncho! Bill W. and I, Michele Wassell were the two naturalist on board. ---- We were also on the look out for the Western Gray Whale that is expected to come through the Channel Islands either yesterday or today. She is the last one that is tagged per reports by Alisa Shulman-Janiger. If anyone gets any photos of Gray Whales from yesterday through this coming Sunday, please email them to her per the researchers request. From Alisa: Hi, Everyone- Varvara, the tagged western gray whale, is expected to pass through southern California over the next few days. Dr. Bruce Mate and others on this research project would love to see any photographs taken of gray whales, between today and Sunday. They hope that perhaps someone will photograph Varvara, Agent (another tagged western gray whale), or any of the gray whales that have accompanied these two females down the coast. Varvara was with other gray whales on both Thursday off of Oregon, and on Friday off of northern California. If you are out on the water betweeen now and Sunday, try to get images of both sides of any gray whales, as well as the head area and the flukes. The very small tag is located just in front of the first dorsal knuckle, so especially try to get images of the knuckle area. They are interested in all photos: left and right sides, flukes, and head head shots. Unfortunately, Dr. Mate cannot authorize others to make close approaches to this whale on his permit; hopefully, she will surface near enough to someone's boat so that they can capture a good image of her. Please send your gray whale images (taken today through Sunday) to: Bruce Mate Alisa Schulman-Janiger Dr. Mate will make sure that all photos are shared with the two groups cataloging western gray whales. He asks that folks sharing photos with him also allow the images to go to John Calambokidas as a permanent and on-going focus of archiving gray whale material. Photographer's names will stay associated with their photos as meta-data. Dr. Mate and his colleagues will recognize folks whose efforts contribute to the resulting products. Thanks so very, very much. Good luck! Alisa -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... URL:
