After being cancelled by high wind in the morning, I didn't hold much hope
that we would be going on the afternoon trip since the winds are usually
higher in the afternoon
But today was an amazingly perfect day on the water!
No white water, very little wind, warm and minimal swell.
We headed out from Ventura toward middle Santa Cruz and by the time we could
see Potato Harbor ahead, we saw several spouts in the area.
We were on our 1st gray whale right outside of Potato Harbor and followed it
until it hooked up with its friend and watched both together for a while. We
left them as they were deciding whether to go between AI/SCI gap or continue
south along the north shore of AI. We got many great looks and several
flukes that pleased the crowd.
We saw several other spouts in area - probably at least 6 animals in the
area
We saw 1500 commons in 3 groups (1000+300+200) with many little ones that
were the usual crowd pleaser and of course sea lions - some jumping and
playing and up to their usual tricks.
Thanks to Capt. Anthony and crew for another fun day on the water.
PS: If you have been to San Ignacio Lagoon and haven't talked to IPCO crew
member Pancho he has a very interesting story to tell about the lagoon. Ask
him next time you see him.
Even if you haven't been to San Ignacio, you still would find the story
interesting.
