WOW! 12 HUMPBACKS + 1 BLUE 1,000 COMMON DOLPHINS Noteworthy: Even more Humpbacks seen in the distance. The Krill were on the surface, so the Humpbacks and the Blue were lunge feeding. Unfortunately, they were in the shipping lanes, and Capts. Dave and Mat had to scoot out of the way of an approaching ship. Despite the heavy marine layer, they were able to resume contact quickly. It's been a while since I've seen a Common Dolphin megapod. With all that surface feeding, I was not able to get some fluking, so the PID effort was a bust. Nice to see Cal and Peggy Meuser again. Capt. Dave noted the "body language" from the onset; how this whale approached the boat the first time, which was every exciting. Close. But a blue whale had come up a bit behind us. Capt. Dave explained to the passengers that the boat would not move until we saw where this "friendly" humpback was. I didn't see anything, so i thought the close encounter with the Hump was over. But sure enough, Dave's intuition proved right, that friendly had stayed in very close vicinity and came back again & again almost touching the boat. I have never seen such a prolonged close encounter (I'm sure the Condor crew has) . A time or two this whale sort of just floated up right at the bow, doing the "hoochey coochey," a little wiggle waggle of it's whole body coming to the surface, only nothing about a whale is "little" so the twist in that spinal column was impressive. And then we had the roll overs under the boat, and lots of trumpeting, like "HELLO, anybody there!?" Maybe it would have liked a cheer or two. ha. Close up rostrum, tubercles & blow holes. And pecs, up close side of a fluke, huge whale body arch at the bow, dwarfing the excited human heads at the Condor rail. Also, this whale seemed quite well fed and round. No pronounced backbone here. The trip's beginning, motoring thru the fog, which is going up & down, now you see, now you do not, I was getting worried we would see anything. Also, strangely to me, the waters smoothed out in the gap between Santa Cruz & Santa Rosa, which is where we found the whales. It turned out to be a stellar whale watch day. (& the CX dropped off some campers at Prisoners harbor, too) Can't wait to go out again. Shirley Johnson -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... As spectators of the expeditions we got to know what is out there and the stories made us curious for more and kindles passion for this silent world. S.O.S. Shauna , How do I get three red hats to wear all day Saturday, and especially Saturday night, at our scheduled Marine Mammals of Our Channel Islands National Park and Channel Islands NationalMarine Sanctuary presentation at Carpinteria State Beach? Tara Brown and I will be giving the presentation and celebrating World Ocean Day there at the campfire amphitheater with campers as well as interested locals. But, we definitely want to pay honor the pioneer of the conservation movement and studies related to our oceans! I still have my original Cousteau Society sticker from the 70s! What time will the booth be open at Ty Warner Center, and can we pick up the hats there? Many of the kids were quite young, so the puzzles were a big hit. During the afternoon shift, Tamara and I stamped whales tails on all the kids who passed by, and one group of little girls put their hands together and had a picture taken of their stamps! We were right across from the sea star and octopus, as well as the touch tank, so there were many kids passing by. We wore our red hats in honor of Jacque Cousteau. On the way we came across the Commons, in two groups about 10 minute apart, with the usual performances and sightings of babies in each of the small groups. Shortly afterwards, Captan Mat spotted what he thought was a Humpback, them maybe it was a Blue, however it did not resurface that we could see. So onward, and into Whale Country which did not disappoint. First real sighting was of a Humpback, then a couple of more, with a Blue surfacing in the area as well. Not long after that, we were "in down town" Whale Country. All around near and far, bows and surfacing whales, Humpbacks and Blues. It became a challenge to ensure we were not counting any whale twice or more, as they were moving around a very good bit, mostly feeding. So our numbers above are very conservative. Just let it be said, we saw plenty of whales on this trip. Only a coupe of Flukes by the Humpbacks and none by the Blues, all were basically surface feeding, no need for deeper dives. A very nice cruise along Santa Cruz Island and a good look into Painted Cave, rounded up the trip nicely. The small crowd of about 27 folks on board were delighted. They came from Belgium, Virginia, Florida, Austin, Texas, San Francisco, and Pasadena. While the whale sightings are just off the charts, birds are kind of scarce in the channel right now. I went on the "Condor Express" last Thursday (I know, I need to get these reports out sooner) when we never got closer to the islands than about four miles. We went straight to the middle of the Santa Cruz/Santa Rosa gap, headed west for a couple of miles, then east until we were almost in line with the cave and then north to Santa Barbara. It was choppy and windy but it was surprising not to see any alcids. There were about a dozen Sooty Shearwaters a couple of miles from the coast and then very few in the channel. We found a few hundred feeding with pods of long-beaked common dolphins along the escarpment near the islands. A single Black Storm-Petrel was near mid-channel. I saw a single Heermann's Gull and a single first year Glaucus-winged Gull in the harbor and only Western Gulls anywhere in the channel. The Glaucus-winged Gull is very ratty looking and might spend the summer. The only terns of the day were two Royal Terns with one of the feeding pods of dolphins. Easily the most interesting bird of the day was a South Polar Skua (there might have been a second one but I didn't see it well enough to be sure). This relative of the jaegers is also a kleptoparasite that steals food from other birds at sea. It is a visitor from the southern hemisphere and breeds on the Antarctic continent. A few individuals are seen in our area between April and September, but usually outside of the islands. A single Pacific Loon was flying west a few miles from the coast. While most loons migrate past our area in April, the migration never really stops. There are a few stragglers throughout the month of June, and in July you get the first early south bounders. He failed to dissuade anyone, including a contingent from a local retirement home. All 40 or so passengers ignored his warning and came aboard. Captain Dave hoped to get to the feeding grounds before the winds and sea kicked up and for the most part he was successful. We encountered a solitary Humpback off the west end of Santa Cruz and were provided with some good looks as it spent quite a bit of time at the surface. We left and worked our way out towards Santa Rosa we we encountered a Humpback cow calf pair. Despite the fact that the seas and wind were building we were rewarded with excellent looks at this pair. At one point the calf did a full on breach which delighted the entire crowd. Sea conditions did not afford us an opportunity to take a look into Painted Cave. However, on the return trip to the harbor we encountered a large and very playful group of common dolphins. Possibly the highlight of the entire day was a single California Sea Lion who performed for quite some time while the cow calf pair were on a down cycle. He had the entire boat laughing at his antics off our stern. Kudos to Captain Dave for his stellar effort in locating whales in rather challenging sea conditions. Basta, director, NOAA?s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries. ?We would not be able to accomplish many of the things we do without the selfless commitment of citizens in communities all across the country.? NOAA?s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries manages 14 marine protected areas spanning more than 150,000 square miles of ocean and Great Lakes waters from the Hawaiian Islands to the Florida Keys, and from Lake Huron to American Samoa. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the sanctuary system. Since the mid-1990s, sanctuary volunteers have provided more than $15 million of in-kind support, according to a national value of volunteer time. Examples of volunteer opportunities include annual events such as Ocean Count at Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary, where more than 1,000 volunteers monitor humpback whales from the shores of O?ahu, Hawai?i and Kaua?i during whale season. In Southern California, the Channel Islands Naturalist Corps volunteer program teaches the public about the sanctuary's important ecosystem and the Channel Islands National Park at community events, whale watching tours, and island hikes. Channel Islands Naturalist Corps was named the 2011 Take Pride in America Outstanding Federal Volunteer Program. On the other side of the country, volunteers of Team OCEANin Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary patrol sanctuary waters to provide boaters with valuable navigational information and report illegal activity to sanctuary law enforcement officers. Volunteers also represent their communities through participation in sanctuary advisory councils, which provide advice to NOAA on the management and activities at each of the 14 sites. ?One million hours is a monumental achievement, but we encourage more people to get involved and help ensure marine sanctuaries remain America?s underwater treasures for generations to come,? said Tracy Hadjuk, NOAA national volunteer coordinator for sanctuaries. Thirty eight landing at Scorpion were day kayakers, and three were CINC volunteers: Marty ( VC); Don Mills ( weekend); and your's truly, Cavern Point guide. Kathy Van Slyke went on to SRI to lead the hike. The Island Adventure returned to Ventura Harbor at 6 p.m. after a very rewarding day for all! As a start, under a heavy marine layer, all aboard were thrilled to see at least seven Bottle Nose dolphin escort us OUT OF THE HARBOR! As we crossed the channel three separate 100 strong pods of Common dolphin played in our wakes. Once at Scorpion, the CI Fox was seen in numbers I have not witnessed on the island since the late1980s. During my hike we saw 5 in the VC-campground area and two more on the trail. Sightings were reported by Marty, on the hike he lead when another IPCO boat came in at 9 a.m., and by Don, when he went to Prisoner's Harbor to check out a problem related to the pier there with that boat. Another IPCO boat came in at noon, and Marty took some from it on a hike to Cavern Point as well. All my hikers followed me on to Potato Harbor after Cavern Point, and one did the Scorpion Canyon Loop with me.. A very special fox treat for many who were waiting for the 5 p.m. departure, was the witnessing of a group of four fox pups playing around and about a "day-care" mom. We assume all were not her's, as broods should not be over 3, we think? Anyway, later we saw only 2 playing at a time. Kathy and her hikers from Santa Rosa also reported seeing fox there ( at least 2). I must add all my sightings seem to be of very healthy foxes, totally oblivious to our presence. They were constantly on the move sniffing and searching, if they were the adults. The first one we saw was definitely eating green grass. This day my group saw no indication of wrongful feedings. The only complaint Marty Flam and I heard was that people had not seen a fox. I told people that I couldn't promise but I usually see them in the afternoon around the house and picnic area. Our time on the Island was getting short and people were doubting me when the foxes finally showed themselves. Two adults brought three of the cutest cubs out to play on the steps at the back of the Visitor Center. Made our day. Hope someone gets pictures of them, sorry I couldn't. Reluctantly, we headed toward the gap in search of whales. Captain Mat did a great job of maneuvering the boat for optimum viewing of all the whales. Several humpbacks were near the boat displaying spy hops, flukes, and giving the passengers blasts of their breaths. We followed the blues for great photo ops, including a mother and calf pair. We stayed with the whales for a long time, much to the pleasure of all on board. On the return trip we came upon the second group of dolphins and all passengers exited the cabin again for more photos. Happy passengers were from Germany, The Netherlands, Sweden, Kansas, Iowa and various points in California. Thanks to Captain Mat, crew Matt and Kelly for a wonderful day. These whales were working so hard at cooperative feeding they heated up, which was indicated by the pink/red color of their blood vessels in their mouths and ventral pleats. Capt. It was a real day to remember.? The ocean condition was perfect, the sun was shining most of the time, the water was clear & beautiful.? After we reached the same area as reported by the Condor Express north of the East end of SRI we basically idled & drifted for 2 hours while watching all the fantastic activity around us.? We really couldn't move because the whales were?so close.? There were many sea lions among them seemingly vying for our attention.? There must have been a huge food supply at that spot with nonstop lunge feeding.? The Humpbacks made many approaches to the boat, going under & coming up on the other side.? We had great views of the mouths, baleen, grooves.? In addition to the many flukes we enjoyed an extended tail lobbing exhibit.? An amazing new sight for me was seeing the Blue on the surface turn on its side with short white?pectoral fin up in the air, fluke showing, while lunge feeding!? This happened several times.? We could get a much clearer clue about the true size of that beautiful creature.? The Blue also pooped for us, showing the red evidence of its krill diet.? What a HIGH!! The Nature Conservancy was involved in corralling feral sheep on their 4/5th of the island long before the National Park obtained the East end. I was a volunteer for a couple of summers ( a week at a time ) involved in a massive project building barb wire fences that corralled the feral sheep even while Stanton was still alive in the late 80s and early 90s. The Nature Conservancy was scheduled to gain full possession of their sector when he died. While we were corralling the sheep, to protect other regions from their devastation, I recall different ways of getting rid of them were were discussed and employed, with killing them on the island, as was done with the pigs, a much used option. I will send you a photo of one sickly ram who chased me on one of my after work jogs. Sickly sheep created a problem in using some other options, I recall. While we were doing this in those years, the Gherninis end of the island was involved with hunting the sheep through activities sponsored by "The Island Adventures Club." From 1984 through to 1990 "Island Adventures" grossed over $1 million . The sheep population remained dense on the East end of the island for many years after the issue was "solved" on the Nature Conservancy side. The Santa Barbara News Press has many articles and editorials bout their slant on the killing of sheep on Santa Cruz Island during these years. They followed up these opinionated articles with others about the killing of rats on Anacapa, and the killing of pigs more recently. Paul P.S. Relating to our current concerns about the Santa Cruz Island Fox. It is interesting to note that when we travelled all over the TNC part of the island building fences the fox population appeared to be at least the same healthy level it is now. Also, no matter where we were on the island, near the main ranch area, or on some distant point, the foxes acted exactly as they do today in theScorpion Anchorage area. They were always oblivious to us, yet obviously sniffing and searching-and probably smelling our lunch and snack food! It soon became apparent that the wind and waves were more intense than predicted. He headed east hoping to find some sign of whales, but found only spots of krill on the surface. He kept the passengers informed of what was happening, gave the history of the islands and talked about the flora and fauna. We continued east to Carpenteria, where we paralleled the coast to Santa Barbara. Again, the commentary kept all intrigued as we got an up close and personal view of the coast along the way. Passengers were disappointed that we saw no whales or dolphins, but were understanding of the conditions and looking forward to their next trip. It was 1984-1987. Carey Stanton was still alive, and issues had developed between him and the TNC about the eradication of the feral sheep on his 4/5ths of the island. These issues included Carey Stanton's desire to see perpetual hunting of sheep remain. By June of 1989 the TNC sheep eradication program resulted in the shooting of a total of 31,871 sheep. Remember, these numbers include those that roamed the Prisoners Harbor to Potato Harbor part of the island, north to south, that is now part of the CINP. Carey Stanton died in late 1987. His will included the transfer of all assets of the Santa Cruz Island Company to the Nature Conservancy. See John Gherini's Santa Cruz Island pp 172-179. Heading up the backside of Santa Cruz Island we encountered the large pod of Common Dolphins. They were swimming East - pushing their prey toward Anacapa Is. We circumnavigated SCI and when back into the windy channel, with the help of Condor Express we located 2 blue whales; deep diving with 12-14 minute intervals. A trip to the Painted Cave and a camper pickup at Prisoners Harbor allowed us to get a great view with lots of discussion about the island. The Osprey was seen off the West end of Santa Cruz Island. -- My best, Lisa Rizzo -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Dave along the North side of Santa Cruz, going a short way into painted cave, looking at sea lions and harbor seals hauled out on the beach and then around the South side of Anacapa, and back to the harbor.
