Last Monday's trip to the whale's feeding grounds revealed a strongly flowing ocean current that appeared like a river flowing
between two calmer ocean areas. Several whales were feeding in
this area, including a huge Blue whale. When Mat approached this
area, he discovered that the temperatures on each side of this current differed by 4 degrees ! We were exactly at the site of the famous mingling of the northern and southern currents, and could prove it by the temperature variance. The current itself was sharply defined, and only about 200 yards wide, flowing from the area between Santa Cruz and Santa Rosa toward the northwest.
It was exciting to be able to actually observe the bight that we
have learned about, but will rarely see except under the right
conditions. Thanks, Capt. Mat !
