Hello Ocean and Island People,
The Count: 5 Blue Whales; 2 Humpbacks; 2,500+ Common Dolphin; many sea lions; 41 human passengers ( all Mammals );
1 Bald Eagle; Many Sooty Shearwaters, Cormorants, Pigeon Guillemots, and some Common Murres along with our usual Pelicans and gulls ( non mammals).
Our passengers were from diverse locales: Holland; Denmark; Austria; Wisconsin; and Texas as well as locals. Captains Matt and Dave guided them through a wonderful day on a calm sea. We saw our dolphin within a couple miles of shore going out ( a mega pod ), and again within a few miles of Santa Cruz coming back. The Blues and Humpbacks were spotted in the Gap between Santa Cruz and Santa Rosa islands. We had a long look at both species, and they both provided us with a multitude of flukes! They were definitely hungary: No people watching or showing off.
Kelly was busy in the galley the whole trip, and Tara Brown, yours truly, and Carolyn McCleskey ( P!D ) kept busy as well answering questions from a very involved bunch of passengers! Bernardo Alps was aboard as our bird expert, too. We saw the Bald Eagle just prior to Painted Cave, and that sighting definitely led to a lot of questions and interpretation by Dave and we CINC regarding our successful CINP recovery projects.
I Sari Wa, Paul Petrich
