11 HUMPBACK WHALES
4 BLUE WHALES
1,100 COMMON DOLPHINS
One of the top five days in my 7 years with CINC.
Noteworthy: With the krill right at the surface, there was lots of surface
feeding. The Humpbacks came so close to the Condor that we could see their
mouths fully open, and krill jumping in a desperate attempt to escape.
These whales were working so hard at cooperative feeding they heated up,
which was indicated by the pink/red color of their blood vessels in their
mouths and ventral pleats. Capt. Mat talked about how those vessels coming
into contact with the cold water works to cool down their circulatory
system. The frenzy lasted an hour.
Just outside of the harbor, we finally spotted a megapod of Common
Dolphins. The ocean bubbled like boiling water.
Some of the passengers realized how spectacular the show was, while the
first-timers thought it was just another day at sea.
I was joined by Larry Driscoll (wonderful introduction talk) and Debbie
Shelley (always informative); Crew was Capts. Mat and Dave, as well as Matt.
ENJOYING LIFE,
Hal Altman. PID
