My wife thinks I?m a nut when I leave the house, just after doing a 5-second ?Orca Dance?-It worked! Morning trip started with Capt. Dave getting us on the small pod of Commons, very playful, the clarity in the water was amazing. After about 10 minutes we ventured to coordinates where Dave got a call earlier in the morning about a humpback. After searching, and finding nothing, we went further West to see about the potential for another Humpback site. Meanwhile, Dave kept in contact with the Grey whale count folks on shore and we were just about to turn, when Dennis, Dave and I saw a splash up ahead, we thought it was a Humpy being playful. As we neared?we saw the 7 beautiful black fins?there you go! The whole boat was roaring with excitement. It turned out that there were 5 adult females and 2 calves (maybe a yearling, if there is such a distinction with Orcas). Either way, they were staying close to their moms. They were very friendly for sure. After staying with them for a while, and on our way back, we saw the male with another female about ? mile from the other pod. Stayed briefly with them, and came back for the noon trip. I went overboard with PID pics, oops! Noon trip 3 Greys 12 Dalls The same Orcas...and some more? Capt. Dave had a friend of his on a private boat see if he could find the Oo pod. As the second wave of guests came on board, they were hearing from the morning folks that we saw Orcas. We had to set expectations that we would most likely not see them again. Meanwhile, about ? mile offshore of Hope Ranch, we saw a grey whale spout, but it ditched us. Then we came across about a dozen Dall?s, and stayed with them about 10 minutes. Then Dave got a call from Michael Smith guiding him to two greys just of Isla Vista. ?Sure enough, they gave us a good show. While on the greys, Dave got a call from his friend?WE HAVE ORCAS!.... They moved about 6 miles from the morning, but we found them. It was the same pod, they were moving a bit faster, but we stayed with them for about 30 minutes?I took more PID pics, I thought there were more individuals this time?1 or 2. Before leaving them, the male and female couple finally joined with their pod and all of them came up at the same time to bid us farewell. We got in late?but nobody minded?. Of course, with such a potential of possibly being able to PID another Orca...I went overboard again....pixels are cheap ? Prisoners Harbor, once the largest coastal wetland on the Channel Islands, was important habitat for wildlife, native plants, and migratory waterfowl. The value of this project is significant as coastal wetlands in California are increasingly rare?over 90 percent have been eliminated. Power will describe how the wetland habitat was reduced by 50 percent in the late 1800s and early 1900s when former island owners filled it with rock and gravel and channelized the creek. These changes degraded the wetland ecology and its function as a natural floodplain. To restore the wetland?s natural function and ecology fill was removed and the landscape reshaped to return it to its former condition. This will allow it to flood naturally. The project included the removal of non-native species and planting of native vegetation to improve the riparian and woodland habitat. Power, a restoration ecologist for Channel Islands National Park since 2004, is the wetland project lead. Prior to her work with the National Park Service she was a research botanist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Texas. Paula has a bachelor?s degree in ecology and evolution from the University of California at Santa Barbara and a master?s degree in biology from Texas State University. This lecture will be held on March 14, 2012. The ?From Shore to Sea? lecture series is sponsored by Channel Islands National Park to further the understanding of current research on the Channel Islands and surrounding waters. The lectures occur at 7:00 p.m. on the second Wednesday of March, April, May, September, October, and November at the Channel Islands National Park Robert J. Lagomarsino Visitor Center, 1901 Spinnaker Drive in the Ventura Harbor. The programs are free and open to the public. Catherine has the gist of it. Here is a short blog entry I did in response to many inquiries. Feel free to share. . . . Many sailors and frequent passengers in the Santa Barbara Channel have noticed and asked about the increased ship traffic in the shipping lanes in recent months. Here is the scoop: Beginning in July of 2009, the California Air Resources Board (CARB), required all ships operating within 24 nm of the California shoreline to burn only low-sulfur marine fuel oils. As you know, the shipping lanes in the Santa Babara Channel are well within that 24 nm limit. Since the low-sulfur fuel costs more, most operators elected to operate outside the 24 nm limit, which resulted in noticeably less traffic in the shipping lanes. In December of 2011, the boundary was extended out to 24 nm from the shorelines of all of the channel islands--substantially further than the original boundary. In addition, an exempt zone was created off of Pt. Conception to encourage ships to enter into the existing shipping lanes. And finally, many ships are now equipped with fuel switches that enable them to switch over to the low-sulfur fuel oil when operating off of California. Hence, now it is probably less expensive to burn the low-sulfur oil and transit closer to shore, than to burn the cheaper fuel and travel the extra distance. So--most shipping is using the original lanes again. We found the three Gray whales pretty early in the trip. All looked mature. They were headed north at a steady pace. We had some nice fluke displays. The sea was so flat that we could see for miles and couldn't see any other activity, so Captain Dave took us along the east side of Anacapa. It was interesting seeing the many small caves and the eucalyptus grove. We did the usual trip around the arch to see the sea lions hauled out on the rocks. On our trip back to the harbor we altered our course slightly to go to an area where there was a lot of sea bird activity. We got in the middle of a true feeding frenzy. There was a large ball of bait fish, so thick that the water was black except when there was a flash of silver bellies. It seemed that they were trying to use the boat and the boat's shadow to evade the 300 common dolphin and almost as many sea lions that were pursuing them. While this drama was taking place along side and under the boat there were about a hundred pelicans diving just a few feet from the boat. There were even more cormorants diving from the surface and Western Gulls were trying to scavenge the scraps and steal fish from the pelicans. As I said, we were in the middle of frenzy. The frenzy was playing out both above and below the surface of the water. All the passengers felt they had been a part of a National Geographic film. IPCO crew: Dave, Luke, Andrea. These conditions did not deter passengers, young and old, from having a good time. Three kids were asking a lot of ocean-related questions, like, "Do birds sleep? Can they sleep while they are flying? Their enthusiasm for the ocean was gratifying. They would have loved to see the whales, but were thrilled when we encountered the dolphins. The ocean was calm, and it turned out to be an uneventful, yet beautiful, mellow trip. The afternoon trip was very eventful, I had never seen anything like it. We again encountered dolphins & birds, but this time, the four Grays displayed very mature, passionate behavior. They courted and mated, turned and twisted, to their huge hearts content! Unabashed. The two whale-watching boats did not exist, we were not there. This rated R behavior went on for over an hour. It was actually quite comical, seeing the elderly passengers grin from ear to ear. It was wonderful trip, driving North on Highway 1, hugging the mountain. I've driven it ~12 years ago, but it was as spectacular now as the first time. The vast ocean, different shades of blue blending into each other. But first, the Elephant Seals around Piedras Blancas, by the light house, just south of Cambria. Massive animals, sprawled all over the beach. I couldn't tell pups born this year, they were all so big. Here are some specifics on the whales: -- Off Pfeiffer Beach (small, very rocky, powerful surf. Sightings from a high perch), about 1.5 miles south of the park -- 10 Grays seen most clearly, several other spouts too far away. -- In a span of ~ 20 minutes, I first saw 2 spouts next to each other. These two were not out of sight yet when I noticed a third Gray. The first two were just out of sight, when I spotted the 4th one. So it is possible that these 4 whales were traveling as a pod. It was hard to estimate distance from the beach. -- About 25 minutes passed without seeing a spout, but I was hooked and couldn't leave, you understand! My dear husband is also very understanding, and his 300 mm lens (extending it to 600mm) was great. It was cool and windy, but very sunny. We were at our post for over two hours. Happy sightings all. I'll be whale watching this coming Saturday. Maria G. Joel, on the island for the weekend, guided a team from the BBC around the island as they document a segment of the their upcoming documentary on Gray Whale migrations. Marty Flam was helping guide a team of student volunteers from Oxnard HS in plant restoration near Inspiration Point. I led a hike with 33 of the passengers to Inspiration Point. They were a very attentive and diverse group. Added to the hike interpretation was an approved segment on the Del Rio shipwreck in Frenchy's Cove, a vessel that was a part of the world's most productive fishing industry when she sank in 1952.. That industry was ignorant of the debt that it owed to the unique bounty of marine ecosystems that resided within the frame of our Channel Islands and the So Cal mainland. Within the hike party were six family members of one of the original owners of the Del Rio. Another co-owner was my father, who later retired from a long and distinguished service with the California Department of Fish and Game. It was truly a fantastic day! Captain Anthony took us from Frenchy's Cove to the arch with Dani giving a great narrative about the island. On the return trip we encountered the dolphins to the excitement of everyone on board. The passengers were happy to see the whales, but thrilled with the dolphins. It was very windy and cold and all were happy to be onboard anyway. The ocean was oddly calm for being so windy. The group from CSUCI was very interested in learning about the whales, thus I was engaged by them until we found the whales, which were pretty close to Grace Oil Platform. The passengers were thrilled with the pod of four whales, who treated us to several beautiful flukes. The whales were heading north and traveled together. Captain teated us to Arch Rock. On the way back to harbor, we found the small pod of Commons to everyone's delight. PM Trip: 128 passengers 4 adult Gray Whales Small pod Common Dolphins Weather conditions were pretty similar to the morning trip. We had passengers from France, Peru, Texas, Minnesota, New York, and many locals. We encountered the pod of Grays close to Grace Oil Platform, and stayed with them for about 45 minutes. These whales were very energetic as they traveled north, slowly but steadily. Again, we were treated to many flukes and spouts, plus, they appeared to be frolicking as they swam. Passengers were happily taking pictures the whole time we were with the whales, and at Arch Rock. We encountered the Common Dolphins as we were returning to Ventura Harbor, more pictures taken again. Another trip to the island for a beautiful view of the Anacapa coastline and Arch Rock.? Plenty of birders on board both trips, many folks from the Gordon Convention and a group of 40 youngsters from Piru elementary on the AM trip.? What a great day thanks to Capt. Anthony at the helm, Jean and Luke as crew and providing narration.? Passengers most impressed with all the info and knowledge gained through the narratives provided.? Thanks to all aboard for a delightful ocean day. Tina Armbruster Stephens -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Seas were rough on the way out under total cloud cover, with many sick children. The dolphins lifted everyone's spirits, and the fin whale amazed, as did Captain Anthony's commentary as we followed the fin whale. P.M. sightings 1 dolphin pod of about 100, a mega pod on the back side of Anacapa of at least 1000 Passengers were from Illinois, New York, Thousand Oaks, Apple Valley, Simi Valley, England, South Africa and Holland, including a large group of home-schooled students and their parents. The clouds lifted behind Anacapa and everyone enjoyed viewing the dolphins under blue skies through calm and clear water. Thanks to Captain Anthony, Page and Steve for a great job! Since the tide was at dead low, visitors were ferried to the beach by skiff. ?At the end of the day one of the rubber bumpers on the dock appeared to have come loose and Cpt. Jason was concerned that it might be sucked into the prop, so boarding on the way home was also by skiff from the beach. ?Luke and Pancho did a fantastic job of getting people in and out of the skiffs both times amidst challenging conditions. There were about 14 people on the hike. ?When we ended at the midden above cathedral cove, one of the visitors spied a small olivella shell bead with a?hole in its center! ?This was passed around to the group and then left in place for the next lucky set of hikers to find. ?The hikers asked good questions and several stopped by the visitor center where Joanna Guttman was also available to help them.? ?
