Hello Naturalist,
Skipper Jason, with deckhands Pablo and DeeDee, took a full boat to Anacapa today over very calm seas. Joel, on the island for the weekend, guided a team from the BBC around the island as they document a segment of the their upcoming documentary on Gray Whale migrations. Marty Flam was helping guide a team of student volunteers from Oxnard HS in plant restoration near Inspiration Point. I led a hike with 33 of the passengers to Inspiration Point. They were a very attentive and diverse group.
Added to the hike interpretation was an approved segment on the Del Rio shipwreck in Frenchy's Cove, a vessel that was a part of the world's most productive fishing industry when she sank in 1952.. That industry was ignorant of the debt that it owed to the unique bounty of marine ecosystems that resided within the frame of our Channel Islands and the So Cal mainland. Within the hike party were six family members of one of the original owners of the Del Rio. Another co-owner was my father, who later retired from a long and distinguished service with the California Department of Fish and Game. It was truly a fantastic day! Paul
