It is a 138-page, coffee table sized book with full page, full color photographs on practically every page. It is the perfect holiday gift for mammal lovers. Due to the size and number of huge color images, the hard bound edition is admittedly not for every budget. You will find the iPhone and iPad version less expensive. The book is a photographic study of what goes on between our local marine mammals. I hope you like it. References: Message-ID: <26443AC1-95E1-4A67-895D-1DBE67CEAD40@me.com> Ahoy CINC, I am extending a personal thanks to Joel Justin for being Skipper Extraordinaire in offering his boat and GPS savvy last Sunday for a ship wreck exploration adventure with special meaning to this CINC member! Joel launched his boat at Channel Island's boat launch, with me and an ex-teacher friend, John Grenfell, as crew. With calm seas and beautiful weather, we motored to Frenchy's Cove on Anacapa Island to explore the beach and shallow water remains of the commercial fishing boat, the Del Rio. The Del Rio sank in 1952 after catching fire and drifting in toward shore. All crew members were saved and taken to San Pedro, her home port, by another fishing boat from that same port. My father was one of the original owners of the Del Rio. He, and her other two owners at the time, sold her to the Navy during WWII. This was my first visit to the wreck sight. Thanks again, Joel! The Del Rio saw service during WWII as a mine sweeper, as did many of the commercial fishing boats from California. My father bought his share of the Del Rio after the war from the Navy, than soon sold it. When the Del Rio sank she was still a productive member of the world's largest commercial fishing enterprise which, in large part, owed its good-fortune to the bountiful nutrient rich waters around our Channel Islands. The link below is to Joel's Skydrive photo album of our trip. My photo capabilities does not yet allow me to add my photos, which were mostly above water. But, if you are interested, the whole story of the Del Rio, and the fishing industry she represents, is in our CINC online Training Manual. Message-ID: Ocean and Kelp People, I should like to share my reflections on recent observations from snorkeling in our CINP. While on the Conception for 3 days with a Truth Aquatics outing mid September ( which included the Vission ), I had the opportunity to snorkel extensively at three different sites off shore Santa Cruz Island: Alberts Anchorage on the south, and two sites around Prisoner'sHarbor o the north shore. All three locations were not in an MPA, although obviously they were within the CINMS. Then, last Sunday, thanks to Joel, I was able to snorkel extensively at Frenchy's Cove which is within the north shore Anacapa MPA. Below follows my pleasantly astounding observation of what fantastic good MPAs must be doing in regard to at least one fish of our California kelp beds that has long been a desired catch for sport fishermen-women since recreational fishing has existed as a sport. Calico Bass have resided in every kelp habitat I can remember exploring, as a sport fisher or scuba diver myself, or as casual snorkeler. But I have to say, I have not witnessed such large and numerous Calicos in and around every healthy kelp outcrop available in a habitat, as I saw in the MPA at Frenchy's, except for one time. And that time I was fishing in my family outboard in the holding net tank for the soon to be completed Marine Land of the Pacific, off the Palos Verdes coast ( it was foggy )! In contrast, as beautiful and kelp generous a habitat Albert's Anchorage was, the Calico were few and small. Also, the "Marine Gardens" shoreline extending west from Prisoner's are no longer the Marine Gardens I remember when scuba diving there extensively in the 1970s. The urchins are much more extensive, and the kelp beds not near as plentiful. In areas where the kelp is healthy around Prisoners, the Calico Bass are again sparse and smaller than what we used to see and catch. HOWEVER, in this realm, one fish species that is definitely as large as ever ( or larger ) and definitely more abundant, is the Garibaldi, our bright orange State Fish. It became our State Fish in 1995. In 1994 it was earmarked for protection by State law helped along by Jean-Micheal Cousteau's Ocean Futures Society. Of course we all know by now what science teaches us about the importance of letting fish species get as large as they can, at least in selected time or location zones, to ensure maximizing reproduction. This interactive workshop opened my eyes and expanded about understanding of the urgency of our messages as members of the Channel Islands Naturalist Corps. Here are some important things I learned: ? CHEMISTRY: Water and Carbon form Carbonic Acid. H20 + C02 = H2CO3. Dry ice is solid CO2, and to see it dropped in water, and bubble with its sour, zesty order and cloud like a witches brew is a very dramatic way to illustrate the risk! For some reason, 90% of the Hydrogen atoms spin into the atmosphere leaving bicarbonate, which leaves fewer carbonate ions available for shell building and coral production, mostly in the larvae (reminds me of egg shell thinning with the DDT). ? LOGARTHYMIC SCALE: The pH scale is not linear - a drop from pH 8.2 to 7.9 indicates a 150 percent increase in acidity! Bottom line: Relate it to earthquakes so that people understand that a small-sounding change in ocean pH is quite large. That said, pH changes with photosynthesis, so it is more acidic at night and less during the day when oxygen is being produced (especially by the kelp). This is called the "diurnal cycle of pH due to respiration" NOTE: Seawater is slightly basic now, around 8.1. ? CHANNEL ISLANDS/CALIFORNIA RISK: Acidity is greatest in polar regions and East Coast Upwellings (CA/OR/WA coast) that bring the colder waters down from the north! Sea urchins, squid, and sperm whales are at risk. Best suited for an acidic environment is jellyfish and algae, including domanic acid. ? URGENCY: Ocean Acidification has changed 100 times faster than any change in the past 21 million years. 30% of the CO2 in the atmosphere is absorbed by the oceans. It takes centuries to remove it naturally. Swimming sea snails, called peteropods, shells are expected to dissolve by the end of this century! They are critical to the marine food web, ultimately feeding whales and humans. ? WHAT WE CAN DO: Decrease/Eliminate Carbon burning into the atmosphere. Give positive messages such as (from the NPS website): * TRANSPORTATION: Avoid traveling by airplane. Walk, ride or take the bus. * ENERGY: Turn off lights/appliances/electronics when not in use. Install solar. * HEATING/COOLING: Install a tankless water heater, weatherize your home. * WASTE: Buy secondhand items. Don't replace items that are still useful. * FOOD: Chose local, seasonal food. For example: What is the difference between traveling on a trip by air, bus, rail, or car in terms of our footprints ( given a comparison based on average capacity of each method of transport ). Also, what about our use of various appliances: How do they compare? And, specifically, if we are discouraged to replace things we use merely for style, what are the carbon footprint multipliers that need to be replaced NOW to be upgraded in efficiency ? Another example: We need to know how using something like a dishwasher, compares in making a footprint to unplugging appliances when not used? As outstanding as the symposium was, answers to this inquiry were vague. However, if you google "Carbon Footprint Calculator" you will find help with these specifics, although you have to click through hoops. The Nature Conservancy has one, which will cover the type of home you live in from a large abode to a mobile home. And NOAA's website has a great overall and updated coverage of all of this specifically related to Ocean Acidification. ALSO, specific to baleen whales ,research shared at a very recent symposium on ocean acidification indicates that krill abundance can indirectly be imperiled by ocean acidification. Recent research has found that the food sources for krill are beginning to be negatively impacted by ocean acidification. On the positive side, eel grass and kelp are acting as buffers to ocean acidification, but need lots and lots of help now! Message-ID: All, Saturday was the last SMI trip of the year. We couldn't have asked for better conditions. Sunshine all day with mild winds (10-15 mph - even on SMI!). And the sea was relatively flat as well. We had about 40 day visitors on board with George Roberts and I as VIPs. Catherine French was onboard in an "unofficial" capacity with her daughter too. The trip out only took 3 hours. The most interesting marine life we saw was a group of sea lions in the gap between SRI and SMI doing a very good porpoise imitation. They were in roughly the same place doing the same thing on the return. Other than that, only a few dolphins and no whales. Ranger Ian Williams met us on the beach along with VIP Scott Schreiner (he camped from Monday to Saturday and had glorious weather the whole time) and we offered 3 hikes for the visitors. George took the largest group (~20 people) to the Caliche Forest. Ian took a group of 8-10 to The Brooks Canyon overlook, and I took a group of 8 to the Nidever Adobe and the Cuyler Bluffs. Since we have 4 hours on the island, no one was going to be rushed. George easily got is group to the Cabrillo monument, thru the campground and a stop and the Lester Ranch and Ranger Station before heading out the the Caliche Forest. I had 2 people head back after the view from the bluffs. With all the time we had, the rest of us headed for the Abalone Midden. We were going to turn back there, but one gentleman who had been on numerous SMI day trips was interested in going on. The other 5 headed back and I told him that we could try to get to Harris Point, but we would turn back once we had an hour before boarding time. He was a good hiker and we easily made it to Harris Point. We arrived back to the beach at 3:15 in plenty of time. We departed 20 minutes early (it doesn't take too long to skiff 40+ people) and visited Painted Cave on the way home. There was a bit of a swell rolling in, so we only went into the first "room". But regardless of how far in you go, it's always a treat! With days like this, it's obvious why IPCO runs these trips in the fall. We led one hike on Friday, two on Saturday, and three on Sunday. Doug (Crawford?) also came out on Saturday and helped out with the early afternoon boat. On Friday we had nearly 100 grade school kids arrive at Scorpion for some wonderful outdoor education led by IPCO. We also had a Boy Scout Troop for a campout and on Sunday had nearly 60 visitors from Thousand Oaks wanting to get some visualization of TC Boyle's book, When the Killing's Done. We gave the Thousand Oaks group a special tour with extra emphasis on the ranching era with the help of Carolyn Greene. The most interesting part of the weekend was seeing a pair of bald eagles on Friday enjoying the light wind. One was originally seen passing low over the pier just as the first IPCO boat was being unloaded. Karen and I saw a pair (presumably one was the earlier one spotted) in the early afternoon traversing playfully from Potato Harbor to Cavern Point. One of the eagles had a blue marking under each wing and much to my surprise, I spotted an antennae rising from its back. First remote-controlled bald eagle I've ever seen! They didn't appear within our vision the rest of the weekend, but that sight will stay with us for awhile. We had mild east wind conditions that grew more intense once on the island, where 100 got off at Scorpion. 80 of the latter were 4th to 6th graders and chaperones from Santa Barbara schools on a marine debris clean-up and education outing handled by the IPCO staff. About 10 disembarking were kayakers and their guides. I had 7 join me on my hike to Cavern Point, and 4 of them joined me on the trek to Potato Harbor. Dean Benjamin handled the VC. 13 went on to Prisoners Harbor. It was mild, but East windy: The windiest hike I have ever lead. I lost 3 laminated cards blown out of my hand on Cavern Point! We saw a non-shalant fox and picked up escorting Ravens, right at the start. At Potato Harbor we ran into most of the kayakers "on land", being led on hikes by their respective kayak guides! It was plan B for them due to the increasing wind. However, in Potato Harbor below, there appeared to be tropical calm retreat, as 3 boats were anchored and many of their crews were snorkeling in visibly clear and flat water. The Ravens seemed not phased by the wind at all, and went down to join the boats below. Dean reported that the Visitor Center was without power all day, so the videos and lights were not functional. This may exist as a problem for a while, we were told? However, no one on the boat trip back complained about the day, that included a good deal of spry as we returned. At least 1/3rd of the kids aboard purposely got soaked in the spray, and still enjoyed a long encounter with "people watching" Common Dolphin half way home who seamed especially interested in the kids peering at them who were dripping wet! Don Mills was on the return trip, boarding at Prisoner's Harbor. He had just completed supervision of days of labor on the the Pier at Prisoner's at it's base connection to the shore. It was in bad shape. So, when you walk on land from the boat and pier from now on at that harbor, give thanks to Don and his crew. It was a cooperative effort I understand, between the CINP, TNC, the Navy, and UCSB. Message-ID: Three humpbacks 1000 or so commons A breaching whale in the far distance was spotted, which led us to Rope and another smaller humpback, which gave us nice views for quite a while. But the breaching humpback was probably not one of these two whales...as breaching started again. Most got to see some breaching in the distance. We then headed toward this whale that stayed with the boat for some time. Bright white pecs glowed thru the water. Though the whale never surfaced closer to the boat than about 30 yards, at one point I saw white just under the bow. Sure enough it was our whale swimming under the bow of the boat. Many at the bow saw glowing white wings dead center, just under the bow. Kind of magical! Gray and Karen Sullivan were also on board, Dave was captain. Nice day! Message-ID: Hi Everyone, I got bored today, so I finally created/updated eBooks for all the island hikes. This is in addition to the Historical Resource Study eBook I made a while back. So what?s an eBook? It?s an electronic book you can read on a Kindle or virtually any mobile device (tablet or smartphone). You can also use them on a computer (PC or Mac). If you use a mobile device, you will need to download the free Kindle app from your app store. You will find all the eBooks I?ve created on the CINC SkyDrive in the ?IslandTrainingManual ?> eBooks? folder: https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resid=A4B2402948FA1EE1!907 Here?s a list of eBooks available: - Anacapa Island Narrative - Santa Cruz Island Narrative - Santa Rosa Island Narrative - San Miguel Island Narrative - Santa Barbara Island Narrative - CINC Procedures and Information - CINP Historic Resource Study - CINP Additional Resource Information The narrative eBooks contain the Logistics, Orientations, Guided Walks and Additional Resource Information for each island. The procedures and info eBook contains many of the documents in the ?2 Forms and Procedures? folder on the CINC SkyDrive. The Additional Resource Information eBook contains many of the documents in folders in ?8 Additional Resource Information? on the CINC SkyDrive. I?ll keep these up to date as future changes are made. The first thing you?ll want to download and read is the ?How to Install an eBook? PDF document. It has several useful links as well as eBook download instructions for iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, Android phones and tablets and BlackBerrys. Now I?ll admit that I don?t have an Android or Blackberry device, but I know these instructions used to work. I do have iPhones and iPads and these definitely work for them. Why would you want these? It provides an easy way have all this information with you when you?re on the islands. I can?t tell you how many times I?ve brushed up on an orientation or hike on my Kindle in bed the evening before a trip, or in the evenings on the islands, spent hours reading the Historical Resource Study. I never print or carry paper copies. I hope some of you find these as useful as I have. And if you have any questions or new eBook ideas, don?t hesitate to ask. I?m working on putting together a eBook from the 7th (2008) California Symposium papers and when this year?s symposium papers are published, I?ll probably put one together for it too. Enjoy, Joel... The last archeological presentation at the California Islands Symposium clarified the details about the sad episode. The Otter hunters responsible for it were Native American Aleuts hired by a Russian fur company hunting otters along the California coast, in retaliation to the the killing of one of their's by Nicolenos. Two Aleut leaders were handed over by the company to be tried by Mission clergy on the mainland.
