Regarding the plea from Dodie Duffy and Diane Rennell about pelicans with slit throats in Channel Islands Harbor, I checked with harbor officials. Below is the response from Harbormaster Jack Peveler. May have been isolated incidence. Know one knows more at this point. Still, being observant is a good thing.

There is no evidence that I am aware of, we have a concerned citizen that is involved with the Santa Barbara Wildlife Society that has requested to post flyers indicating that someone is killing the pelicans. I spoke with her and she stated that a vet examined two birds and concluded that they had been killed by human means. I have not been contacted by any state or federal agency about this issue.
