Ahoy CINC,
I am extending a personal thanks to Joel Justin for being Skipper Extraordinaire in offering his boat and GPS savvy last Sunday for a ship wreck exploration adventure with special meaning to this CINC member! Joel launched his boat at Channel Island's boat launch, with me and an ex-teacher friend, John Grenfell, as crew. With calm seas and beautiful weather, we motored to Frenchy's Cove on Anacapa Island to explore the beach and shallow water remains of the commercial fishing boat, the Del Rio. The Del Rio sank in 1952 after catching fire and drifting in toward shore. All crew members were saved and taken to San Pedro, her home port, by another fishing boat from that same port. My father was one of the original owners of the Del Rio. He, and her other two owners at the time, sold her to the Navy during WWII. This was my first visit to the wreck sight. Thanks again, Joel!
The Del Rio saw service during WWII as a mine sweeper, as did many of the commercial fishing boats from California. My father bought his share of the Del Rio after the war from the Navy, than soon sold it. When the Del Rio sank she was still a productive member of the world's largest commercial fishing enterprise which, in large part, owed its good-fortune to the bountiful nutrient rich waters around our Channel Islands.
The link below is to Joel's Skydrive photo album of our trip. My photo capabilities does not yet allow me to add my photos, which were mostly above water. But, if you are interested, the whole story of the Del Rio, and the fishing industry she represents, is in our CINC online Training Manual. Sincerely, Paul Petrich Jr.
