 A P.S. to Steve Chawkin's article might be needed to add clarity to the terrible massacre  of so many of the Lone Woman's people. The last archeological presentation at the California Islands Symposium clarified the details about the sad episode.  The Otter hunters responsible for it were Native American Aleuts hired by a Russian fur company hunting otters along the California coast, in retaliation to the the killing of one of their's by Nicolenos. Two Aleut leaders were handed over by the company to be tried by Mission clergy on the mainland.  Paul Petrich
