These lectures are free of charge (do have to pay for parking) and held on Monday evenings (see attached). I have attended these seminars in the past and found the information presented to be very useful. Also, I have checked this posting with Shauna, and she agrees that these should be of interest to our volunteers ... and has further advised that those attending may charge hours associated with these lectures under the "Training" designation. The AM trip had foreign passengers from Germany and Argentina. Many parents with children on spring break from Utah, Georgia and Montana. Massive feeding frenzy which the passengers enjoyed watching with action both above and below the surface. The PM trip had foreign passengers from France and Italy. Again, parents with children on break. Visitors from the states included Ohio, Mississippi & Utah. We saw our whales very shortly after we left Ventura Harbor. Spectacular tail flukes and breaching behavior was observed. We did see some flukes and one adult with a Very distinctive large, solid white mark on its left flank. Skies cleared for the second trip, which was booked solid, yet no whales were seen. :/ However, the kids had a grand old time getting splashed from behind at the bow, and the passengers enjoyed themselves and asked many questions. Ralph Collier's presentation in Carpinteria about Sharks ( repeated at UCSB in March ) gave us these comparative facts about shark attacks as well: 9 fatalities world wide from shark attacks in 2012 compared to 50 in the USA alone related to dog attacks. Since the year 2000, of the 72 shark attacks that occurred along the North American West Coast ( 8 in Calif. ): 48% on surfers; 30% on other floating devices; and almost all in pinniped rookery regions. No shark attacks have been ever recorded as happening on the populous sandy beaches of Ventura and Santa Barbara, and only Great Whites, and maybe Mako sharks, are threats. The former have been sighted in these regions when Grunion approach the beaches to spawn in summer months. In 1968 when Ralph Collier did research on the then very abundant Blue Sharks in local waters, he set a long lie with 200 hooks in a cove off Catalina and caught 196 Blue Sharks in 4 hours. In 1998, when he repeated the exact same research set in the same place, he caught 6 Blue Sharks in 24 hours!! In the 1950s, sharks were considered "garbage fish" by sport-fishing boats out of the LA area, were thrown back in, and did not count in a jack pot. Deck hands on said boats, got good tips if you gaffed a sport-fishing person's Tuna or White Sea Bass before a lurking shark, often times under the boat, suddenly took everything but the fish's head! If the latter happened, you got nothing!! And, the tuna and white sea bass were abundant at the same time as the shark abundance! I Sari Wa! The morning the sea was calm and we headed out toward Anacapa. On the way out we were treated to a Steller sea lion hanging out on the channel buoy. We searched for quite some time to find whales but instead we encountered some rather large pods of common dolphins totaling around 2500. Lots of leaps and wave and bow wake riding. On the way back into the harbor we did finally see 1 lone gray whale and it was a bit shy and we could only get glimpses of its blows. PM was much the same conditions. Headed out and saw the lone Steller sea lion and then encountered more of the large pod of common dolphins. Just before we headed back towards the main land we found 9 Dall's porpoises with 3 coming close to the boat and a bit of bow riding. A special viewing for our guests. We had small groups today with visitors from London, Rochester, Nevada and Oxnard. Great narration from our Capt Anthony, Joel, Matt and Paige. With fellow naturalist Dean Benjamin. By Catherine French http://www.thelog.com/Newsletter/Article/Sea-Lions-Take-Over-Ventura-Docks *** According to Ventura Harbormaster Scott Miller, on March 19, 51 sea lions hauled out on one of the floating docks at Ventura Harbor Village Marina. An adult female sea lion weighs about 250 pounds and adult males can weigh 600 to 1,000 pounds each. *** As of April 2, there were only a few sea lions on the marina?s floating docks. ?Right now, the sea lions have left, for the most part. If they come back in large numbers, we plan to try erecting two by fours on the docks, making it less inviting or the animals to haul out,? Miller said.? *** "The public is cautioned not to approach hauled out sea lions, as they are protected by law. Federal guidelines for both animal and human safety are to keep 100 yards distance on land and 50 yards distance in the water" -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The topic was "Risk and Uncertainty and the Communication of Sea Level Rise." The 2 p.m. session, "Responding to the Unknowable and planning for the Future" featured Rear Admiral (ret.) Dr. David Titley, Former Deputy Under Secretary for Operations, NOAA and Dr. Kathryn Yusoff, from the Lancaster Environmental Center, Lancaster Univ.UK. Rear Admiral Titley focused his talk on what NOAA is concerned most about, and what the Navy is most concerned about, in regard to climate change. All their mutual concerns relate to national security. His message: It is Not about Polar Bears! It is about you ( people )! It's All about Water, and the food and energy we get from it, or transport over it. It is All about relative Change, compared to the past. Highlights of his discussion: We have had stability in regard to climate during the time civilizations have developed, while prehistoric humans had immense climate instability. Now, we have to prepare for the advent of that immense climate instability again, and seek ways to mitigate it. He explained ways the US Navy is doing this- as well as NOAA. He said for the first time in over 500 years the Navies of the world face the reality of dealing with world politics and transport on a newly opened ocean ( the Arctic)! The US Coast Guard is already active in regions along our Alaskan north it never had to cover before. In contrast, Dr. Yusoff highlighted the problems facing those excluded in the stories about climate change, describing it as a need for "climate justice". Indigenous people and small low elevation island nations were not , in her mind, included enough in the Western thought about the whole issue. She made a strong case for the reality that our human imprint upon this planet is on par with all previous natural forces that shaped human livability on our planet. The 3:30 session featured Paula Apsell, Senior Exec. Producer. NOVA and NOVA Science Now and Dan Kahan, Professor of Psychology, Yale Univ. Their sub-topic was " Communicating Risk and Uncertainty." Paula did a great job on covering how NOVA has approached educating it's viewers about climate change since 1983. She showed how they kept up viewer ratings while not diluting the primary message, as some other channels did. NOVA never shied away from connecting the human factor in contributing to climate change. She said " That would have been like doing a documentary on lung cancer, without mentioning cigarettes." Prof. Kahan, in contrast, convincingly showed how people of very different cultural and political outlooks can come together on facing very real local threats , but continue to deviate on on "cause and effect" explanations even while gaining more scientific knowledge. He emphasized getting contrary people politically and culturally together on local issues they see as real necessities in their local economic and cultural lives. For example, in Florida everyone has always been concerned about helping overcome the economic and personal devastation from hurricanes and salt intrusion into farm lands. So, local media efforts are effective if they focus on the aspects of climate change mitigation that everyone realizes will attack these increasing threats to comfortable living in Florida. Morning sessions were not attended by yours truly, but we found out that Roberta Reyes Cordero, of the Coastal Chumash tribe, was a main presenter with a focus on !indigenous Communities and Climate Change, moderated by Georgiana Valoyce-Sanchez, Elder, Governing Council of the Barbareno Chumash Council. A total of 9 gray whales were observed, some friendly, others a bit more secretive. The most eventful sighting was during the 9am adventure where we sighted a cow-calf pair not too far from SB Harbor. Upon arriving in the area near the two whales, it became apparent that one of them (we still do not know which one) was entangled in a long line of polyproplylene rope attached to a few styrofoam buoys. This was the kind of of line used on commercial lobster and crab traps. So the pair of whales traveled at a slow pace, dragging the rope and its float behind them. The danger of this kind of entanglement includes abrasion or possible infection of the tail stock region, or the possibility that the rope would become fouled in a kelp bed or boat propeller which would spell the worst for the whale. Also the energy drain on the whale as well as the limitations it imposed on maneuverability are considerations. And so it was that Captain Dave, a fully trained and certified whale rescue man, made the appropriate calls to local whale rescue response teams. Response personnel from CIMWI (Channel Islands Marine and Wildlife Institute), Santa Barbara Mammal Center, and Sea World of the Pacific eventually arrived on two separate boats. Keeping track of the two whales was not an easy task with the grey skies and limited visibility, coupled with long down times and lack of a clear directional heading by the whales. For a while, Condor Captain Scott had stand his 6?4? frame atop the wheelhouse roof with binoculars to help keep us on track. The Condor stayed with the cow-calf pair for just over two hours until the first response boat arrived. By this time, we were late getting our 9am trip back to Sea Landing and picking up our 12 noon passengers. But Captain Dave kept in contact with the entanglement response boats and after a while we learned that they never were able to initiate the rescue sequence and the elusive whales had disappeared in the fog. Photos of the entangled cow-calf pair will be available for your viewing enjoyment sometime tomorrow. http://www.CondorExpressPhotos.com Best regards, Bob Perry Condor Express -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Many were aware that the islands exist, but did not know that five of them are a National Park and that a National Marie Sanctuary surounds them. More importantly, they were delighted to find out that you can actually go on the islands for a visit, including the many options of what they might be able to do there. Further they were intrigued by the whale models, Baleen and Krill. Then they found out that whale watching was available on the Channel. Many wanted to go, and some even said they would plan to go. Kids were very fascinated by the baleen. Then many of them took copies of the sketches of Shark, Dolphin and Humpback whale which they could color in at home. Folks and parents took many copies of the brochures on both the CINP and CINMS, some even took the CINP news paper, Island Views. Time went by, SNAP!! like that as it was a very busy morning at our table. Warren Glasser and his fianc?, Mary, came in for the afternoon shift, while Drew Picard and I let them know the status of supplies and the fine busy morning it was. This was my forth out reach to the AoP, which I find a lot of fun meeting the folks, largely from the LB and greater LA area. As you note above, many are delighted to fined out about our great resource here, and plan to give us a visit, either on a WW or actually a visit to the Islands. Then, the Aquarium itself, is a very fine resource of sea life and an opportunity to wander through it following or before our shift is always a very nice bonus to the outreach event. I highly recommend this outreach to all of us. It is fun and very rewareding to see the interest in the islands, once informed. As mentioned above, Naturalists, Drew Picard, and Warren Glasser did their usual find job of representing both the CINP and the CINMS, with good dialogue and ready answers to the many questions of the public. It was a very nice day, especially considering Tuesday, when the entire Channel was in full on sea action and every one stayed in port. The 9 AM was smooth, and Valerie gave her fine presentation with good questions from the folks. It only took us shy of Henry's Beach to score our first whale of the day, and this was the Cow/Calf pair hanging in there with Mom, quite closely. They were steady, yet with some zig zagging, heading west (north bound), a bit outside of the kelp beds. Folks were delighted to see the pair, especially with the calf. After a good bit following them, they finally dove deep and were gone. Yet is was not long before we saw our first pod of Bottle Nose, 5 in all with two calves. They did the usual thing of coming over to the boat and playing with the boat's pressure wave and generally scoping us out. Another delight for the folks and cameras were humming. The noon trip was a bit more breezy, but still not bad at all. With the little more chop it took a fair amount of time before we discovered a lone juvenile Gray, with a very large amount of barnacles and sea lice all around it blow hole. That made for some very easy tracking as that showed a nice sea blue as it cruised just under the surface between blows. Again, just outside of the kelp line, it was in solid cruise mode, moving very steadily west, just under the surface between blows. We tracked it all the way to Goleta. Folks got some very nice looks and again the cameras were clicking off in unison. It was on the way back that we encountered the second pod of Bottle Nose, so both trips got a nice viewing of both species in action and in the wild. We had a young school group from Ventura as well as folks from England, Belgium, Germany, China, New York, Denver, Boston, and several locals out enjoying these two nice trips into the Channel. The late afternoon trip was canceled. Thanks to Captain Dave for skippering the Condor to his usual fine skills and narration. Captain Scott, and Engineer, Mike filled in the crew duties just fine. Both trips came off without a hitch. Valery Olson joined me on the AM trip, as she had relatives on board and wanted to be there with them. Ginny Fischer, who was kind enough to trade with Valerie for the AM, joined me on the Noon run. I think it was the first time I have had the privilege of doing a WW run with either of these veteran Naturalist, we teamed well on both runs. Hope we can do it again not too far away. The other two trips did not go. 8 Gray whales, with two more passing us by.. 10-12 Bottlenose dolphins We found a cow/calf pair in the kelp off Hope Ranch and followed them for about 45 minutes. They were moving in and out of the kelp and not showing much of their bodies. After we turned back, Captain Dave had heard there were more Grays coming! We saw a group of two cow/calf pairs next, they were traveling fast, then stopping and playing in the kelp. We were able to see much more of the whales, as the calves were lifting their heads, and there was some rolling. I was able to get some good id shots of the moms and some fair ones of the calves. As we left these two, there were two more whales to between us and the shore and two whales ahead. We were running late, so we passed the ones to move ahead and meet up with the ones ahead. One breached at least 6 times. They eventually passed us moving quickly and appeared to be two juvenile Grays. We also saw a group of about 12 Bottlenose dolphins off Hope Ranch, and two a bit later. After full-boat loads over the weekend, we had only 4 and 2 passengers respectively today-But what a day! Captain Tyler skippered both trips westward to the sea shores of Hope Ranch and back. Deckhand Colton spotted most whales today! On each trip we spotted Grey Whales on the way back. Aboard the 10 a.m. cruise we had a couple from Georgia and another couple from the Netherlands aboard. They were treated to two long sightings totaling 5 Grey Whales ( 2 calves ). Seas were calm, but a marine layer persisted. The sun came out for the 1 p.m. trip for the couple aboard from Belgium who had never seen a whale before! We spotted nothing until we got a report from the Condor on the way back about whales off of Shoreline Park. Then things really got exciting. Our Belgian couple ended up viewing 11 Greys ( 5 calves ) in three separate sightings. The second of these sightings requires special note: We escorted 5 Grey's (2 calves), at a steady 3.5 knots from east Shoreline Park to the Mesa Steps at only about 300 yards off shore, just outside the kelp. Suddenly, at Lat. 34. 23.642 and Long. 119. 43.994, the procession stopped, and in a area no larger than 50 yards square, all five whales began behaving strangely in all manners! They submerged, seemingly blowing bubbles from a bottom no deeper than 20-30 feet. They backtracked and milled around, coming up to spy hop! They rolled on their sides on the surface, and under water. At times one would come up with kelp on its head. At times al would be under and we would see only bubbles, then all would be top rolling around and spy hopping! This fun or feeding (or both) continued for exactly 20 minutes, then just as suddenly as it started, one of the adults started their 3.5 knot procession westward again, as if nothing has distracted them from it. Of special, special note, at exactly this very same spot, 300 yds off off the Mesa Steps, I recorded a lone Grey adult behaving in almost the same behavior last Saturday on the Double Dolphin with Captain Tyler at the helm. Captain Tyler says he witnesses this action often at this same spot. He believes they are feeding, and noted for our viewing aboard, a slight sandy discoloration of the fluke prints left behind. Here it is again: "Captain Tyler cruised westward as the whales escort ( it being well over 100 yds shoreside ) all the way to the Mesa Lane steps and adjacent to the UCSB research buoys there. Here the juvenile whale turned around, and lolly-gagged in the area a short while, doing some diving. It is at this location Captain Tyler said he has seen female Grays dive down with their calves to murk-up the sandy bottom that exists there. I?ve been asked this a lot lately: ?Why are the mammal-hunting killer whales being referenced as ?Bigg?s killer whales? rather than as ?transients? as they were previously known?? >> >> This is because a 2010 study found that the mammal-hunting ecotype of killer whales diverged from the other ecotypes some 700,000 years ago and the researchers (Morin et al) put forward that they be recognized as a distinct species. >> >> If they are to be recognized as such, many in whale-research-world believe it is only appropriate that the species be named in honour of the late and great Dr. Michael Bigg whose pioneering killer whale ID research in the eastern North Pacific in the 1970s - 1980s revealed that killer whales have distinct populations and that there are very limited numbers within these populations. >> >> Ultimately, his research led to the understanding that that killer whale populations have distinct cultures. >> >> This knowledge of course had huge conservation implications. It was previously believed that there were abundant killer whales in the eastern North Pacific and that they all ate salmon in addition to marine mammals; rather than the reality that there are 4 at risk populations that are genetically and ecologically distinct: >> >> Bigg?s killer whales - marine mammal-hunters (with an occasional bird or, rarely, a terrestrial mammal). Population estimate: 270 inner coast with research ongoing regarding population numbers of mammal-hunters more often further off the coast. Threatened population - status report and further information here. >> "Residents" - inshore fish-eaters; predominantly salmon - and of the salmon in their diet, the majority is Chinook. >> Offshores - offshore fish-eaters often found along the continental shelf from the Aleutian Islands to California; research ongoing but diet found to include Pacific sleeper sharks and Pacific halibut (NOT salmon). Threatened population - status report and further information here. >> Due to the research of Dr. Bigg, the killer whales of British Columbia have been studied as individuals longer than any other marine mammal species on the planet - and not only marine species have benefited from this. We all have. >> >> Due to his work, whereby the age, gender, diet and range is known for almost every killer whale in British Columbia, the killer whales of British Columbia "tell the story" of global chemical pollution. The work of Dr. Peter Ross examines the toxins in the blubber and indeed the killer whales of BC are the "canaries in the coal mine" informing the science that should shape international policies and regulations regarding toxins. >> >> However, there is also much that has NOT changed since the days of Dr. Bigg's pioneering killer whale research. >> >> Dr. Michael Bigg was thwarted in his research efforts by government forces within what was then the Department of Fisheries. Killer whales were the scapegoat for declining salmon populations and the "gold rush" on their being put into captivity was likely perceived as a favourable management tool. Conservation costs money, not only for science and management, but also by constraining industries whose activities may negatively impact species at risk. >> >> Flash forward some 40 years to 2013. Dr. Peter Ross' employment with what is now Fisheries and Oceans has been terminated as part of what can only be called the demise of Canada's ocean contaminants research program and prior to his termination, he like so many other government scientists in Canada, has been constrained in being able to communicate about his research. >> >> The ultimate Bigg's Deal is that one person can make a profound positive difference - replacing knowledge where fear and misunderstanding once dwelled. >> >> However, to work against government forces that imperil our environment and suppress science in favour of short-term economic gain, it is going to take a very great many of us to make our voices and actions . . . The weather was Santa Barbara perfect, and the sea was calm. On the way west we sighted 5 robust and playful Bottle Nose dolphin. We were over a half a mile off shore at Moore Mesa. My thinking was that these were the Offshore sub-species, as they were very large and robust. Some 5 years ago I remember spotting a meg -pod of them way out by Anacapa or SantaCruz Island. On the way homeward the Condor radioed a Grey sighting ahead of us. We cut power and waited for a large and fast moving single Grey come to us. This was good, as we had many aboard who had never seen a whale. Among these was a family, who had three young children, now living at Vandenberg AFB, who were on their second raincheck try. The kids were besides themselves with delight. The family moved from Wyoming. We had visitors from Denmark, Portugal, and the UK who had never seen a whale as well. All the latter passengers from Europe were very surprised to learn that the Grey whales extinction in the Atlantic was a price paid for the early industrialization of their continent. I guess my concerns amplified when I sat in the back row and found that the group next to me included Dr. Daniela Maldini,( the best expert there on our local Bottlenose), but not until she got up to talk did I know who she was. They were wincing at the beginning of Toni's talk, when she showed the sick dolphin slides, and implied they got sick in our area. They were slides sent to Toni by Daniela, as we found out, and I had a definite take that Daniela did not like the way they were used. Did you notice she immediately corrected the misconception about the slides by telling us that the Dolphins in question got contaminated in her own Monterey Bay, then got better when they came south to"our sun and warmer water?" Then she said she looked forward collaborating with Toni the future, which I saw as an implication such collaboration was lacking prior to the presentation. As we heard, Dr. Maldini went on to explain that the Bottlenose are clearly expanding their range, as the larger numbers in Monterey are from our area, not arriving until 1882. The same ones are even seen in San Diego. So, is the real issue diminishing numbers or a search for expanding their range for some food or health reason? The California Coastal Dolphin Project is bona fide research effort based in Monterey Bay. The information is all accurate albeit presented on an overly dramatic manner to elicit donations. I am not sure about the photos. There are studies about skin lesions in nearshore bottlenose dolphins in California but I have not seen anything this dramatic before. I have neither seen such lesions in animals in the wild nor have I seen published photos like these. ? Take care, ? You are invited to come on down and help out at this fun and important event, joining sanctuary staff and Channel Islands Naturalist Corps volunteers. Volunteers can provide dock support topside as divers retrieve sunken debris from the harbor bottom. This year the target area will be the dock fingers "I" through "K" in Marina One. The Waterfront Department will generously provide donuts, coffee and lunch. This has been a very productive program. According to the Waterfront Department, "last year over 40 volunteers removed a record 3,200 pounds of seafloor junk from beneath fingers E through H in Marina One. Across from the Beachside Restaurant, on the far side of the Goleta Slough, the herons have been roosting for the 21 years I?ve watched them. Starting a year or so ago, the egrets began roosting in the area and I noticed MANY more cormorants last year, but later in the season, I thought they may be occupying the nests left by the larger birds. Many of us commented on the large numbers of cormorants in many of the eucalyptus trees along the freeway in Summerland and Montecito as well. This year, on my visits to Goleta Beach, I see very few herons, a few egrets and many many cormorants. Does anyone have any information on this? Does anyone know if the herons moved elsewhere and where that might be and why? Any thoughts on the larger numbers of cormorants? Is this just a shift in roosting areas, or a population shift? Just wondering... thanks for your info or referrals to more knowledgeable naturalists. Marilyn Dannehower -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
