Hi Folks,
It was a great day at the Aquarium, with hundreds of folks stoping by our table to inquire about who we were and what we were about.
Many were aware that the islands exist, but did not know that five of them are a National Park and that a National Marie Sanctuary surounds them. More importantly, they were delighted to find out that you can actually go on the islands for a visit, including the many options of what they might be able to do there.
Further they were intrigued by the whale models, Baleen and Krill. Then they found out that whale watching was available on the Channel. Many wanted to go, and some even said they would plan to go. Kids were very fascinated by the baleen. Then many of them took copies of the sketches of Shark, Dolphin and Humpback whale which they could color in at home. Folks and parents took many copies of the brochures on both the CINP and CINMS, some even took the CINP news paper, Island Views.
Time went by, SNAP!! like that as it was a very busy morning at our table.
Warren Glasser and his fiancé, Mary, came in for the afternoon shift, while Drew Picard and I let them know the status of supplies and the fine busy morning it was.
This was my forth out reach to the AoP, which I find a lot of fun meeting the folks, largely from the LB and greater LA area. As you note above, many are delighted to fined out about our great resource here, and plan to give us a visit, either on a WW or actually a visit to the Islands. Then, the Aquarium itself, is a very fine resource of sea life and an opportunity to wander through it following or before our shift is always a very nice bonus to the outreach event. I highly recommend this outreach to all of us. It is fun and very rewareding to see the interest in the islands, once informed.
As mentioned above, Naturalists, Drew Picard, and Warren Glasser did their usual find job of representing both the CINP and the CINMS, with good dialogue and ready answers to the many questions of the public.
