No stinging as they are not in the jellyfish family. They form stunningly long chains as if they are holding hands and swimming together al? DNA helix. We have hordes of them at Scorpion RNch, many glowing at night with the dinoflagellate. They seem to have a central ganglion and are a favorite food during warm months of our Mola Mola! Hence more Mola Mola sitings. Beyond this info, I'll have to Google Scholar... Visitors are amazed at their swimming abilities such as those that swim like bat rays and many known as "Vagina Salps" who swim with an umbrella motion opening and closing! True name! They are wonderful little organisms!

More to learn, always...

The article below is long and, in some places, very dense. The author wanders off a lot, but if you are interested in how eyes work, it is well worth the read. Buried near the end is "sort of" a conclusion: Then he (an eye researcher) said something that's key to understanding what we can know about the vision, and maybe the minds of whales: "All we really know is what they can't do." They don't have binocular vision. They couldn't read the big E on a chart at the eye doctor's office. Their ocean is not blue. But when it comes to what it's like *inside* those big heads, we're almost no further along than Melville's guess more than 150 years ago. http://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2013/03/youre-eye-to- eye-with-a-whale-in-the-ocean-what-does-it-see/274448/ Valerie Olson -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I was the very fortunate sole naturalist, with Captain Mat and crewmembers Tasha and Cassidy; Bob Perry generously stepped in to cover PID. After checking out a couple of groups of common dolphins, we encountered a very mellow cow/calf pair of humpbacks hanging out in shallow water off Summerland ("the flats," per Capt. Mat). We spent some quality time with them and got a great look at the mother rolling around. We then got a tip from the Islander that there were blues on the west end of Santa Cruz Island, and we hightailed it over, visiting some offshore bottlenose dolphins along the way. As promised, west of SCI we saw lots of spouts--including one magical moment when five blues lined up in front of the bow for our viewing pleasure. One whale showed us its flukes repeatedly. Amazingly, we also got sunshine, no wind, and calm seas. Shirley Researcher tracks Hawaiian fish history through old menus Published: Friday, August 9, 2013 A National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration scientist is using old menus from Hawaii to learn more about the fish that dwelt in the state's waters long ago. Originally, Kyle Van Houtan had wanted to study sea turtles in Hawaii. He collected 500 menus to figure out if they were once served as a local dish. But he made a different discovery. Fish that lived close to the shore, such as snapper, flounder and grouper, disappeared from the menus after World War II. Van Houtan had inadvertently found a way to track the history of local fisheries through the menus, something that couldn't be done before because Hawaii didn't track the numbers until 1950. "These are very desirable fish," he said. "They used to be on the menus. We see them on there in the 1930s and 1940s, but they're not in any of the menus today." s In their place were bottom-feeding and reef-dwelling fish. And another 20 years later, deep ocean fish, such as tuna and swordfish, were offered up as courses (Christopher Joyce, NPR, Aug. 9). -- JE -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... We were with a solo humpback only 2-3 miles off Faria Beach Park in Ventura for quite some time and saw another humpback in closer to shore. After spending some time with the solo, we headed over to see the other whale and discovered there were 2. The mother had a calf with her that was fairly small yet had some barnacles on its rostrum and lots of scaring and a very distinctive dorsal fin. I got good photos of the 2 adult flukes but the baby never fluked so I took close pictures of the cow/calf pair both together and separate of the 2 dorsal fins so they could be matched up and hopefully tracked later. Capt Dave and I discussed whether the dorsal was an injury or just not fully developed. There were signs that the calf was on the younger side but then Dave agreed it was hard to tell. I just took as many dorsal individual shots as well as shots with the mother so hopefully we will see them next year and be able to identify them. After 1 long down time the baby came right at the bow and surfaced 2 feet from the boat with mom watching closely and then they swam away. There were also several sea lions, 2 of which followed / harassed the cow/calf humpbacks for longer than they were welcome. We also got a couple of wiffs of some good whale breath. All this action was just 2-3 miles just off Faria Beach. The crowd was one of the more pleasant crowds - maybe since we were never more than 5 miles from shore and it was calm and flat so no one got sick. The boat was a total sell out with mostly out of country folks from the UK, Spain, Canada, China, Netherlands, France as well as NY, KS and "locals" from SB, Ventura, LA area and SD area. Everyone super nice and friendly. Several large groups: a group of about 15 from all over the world here for a physics meeting and a group of 25 from China visiting UCSB. This is a fantastic way to research the previous real abundance of fish species in our local waters, as well! Many restaurant owners of old, all along the So Cal Coast, like one of my uncles, would go daily in the early a.m. to local fish markets to get their fish. For example, the City of Los Angeles Wholesale Fish Market, in San Pedro, had multiple businesses that supplied the whole LA Basin's restaurants starting in 1917 ( and an older one before that ). I am researching the old day fish abundance, as related to what we are trying to recover and conserve today. The question is: What was really the sustainable base upon which all our marine science is trying to "recover to"?? Menus of old are a great clue, if it is known the restaurant proprietors got their fish locally! This research would be of more value than old sport-fishing boat catch records in some cases. And the fish markets of old, have come and long gone. Thanks Shirley! Calm seas and it didn't take long until we spotted our first cetaceans. Not far out we encountered a small group of common dolphins feeding. A bit father out still within sight of the mainland and we came upon a large (500 - 1000) common dolphins feeding with quite a few juveniles. Still hadn't crossed the channel when we encountered two humpback whales one in the far distance and another we could approach and the passengers got some great looks as it dove and showed its flukes a number of times. Finally off to the Islands and there we encountered two Dall's porpoises which were there and then gone. We followed that sighting with around 10 -15 Risso's dolphins which gave a display of some breaches. Onto Santa Cruz Island and there we got to see one bald eagle resting on a rock outcropping. Visited Painted Cave and then to Prisoners to pick up campers etc. A very good day!! Visitors were from all over. UK, Arizona, California and Pennsylvania. Excellent crew with Capt. In route to this area we happened on a group of over twelve hundred Common Dolphins spread out over a large area, making the grouping appear even larger than it was. Throughout the day we encountered other groups of DC?s, some large, some small, either scouting and/or nursery groups, with many football size little ones in the mix. Once arriving in the area we located a single Humpback and followed it at an appropriate distance for nearly an hour. However, reciprocity wasn?t happening, thus no friendly approaches or muggings. This whale was busy busy surface feeding, displaying a minimum of behaviors, but did cooperate for many PID opportunities, with short down times and frequent fluking. When we approached this whale Capt Dave thought it could be a whale that performs a unique behavior similar to one in ?Ropes? repertoire, where upon surfacing ?Rope? takes water in the blow hole and splash guard and then spits it out in spasmodic pulses of water with a great gurgling commotion. Today however this whale performed no such behavior. After an hour, it was time to investigate another nearby school of dolphins, a relatively small nursery grouping with many babies. Following a brief visit we were off again, at which point Capt. Mat spotted a distant Humpback performing repeated tail throws, so we ventured in for a closer look and Mat thought we had happened upon our initial MN sighting once again, but it turned out to be a new sighting, a thinner, smaller whale and PID images confirmed a similar but slightly different fluke print. Many of you have reported seeing large #?s of Shearwater in recent days and today was no exception, with thousands of sightings, some in clusters, not unlike a smarm of bees. (Bob may have a posting of this) The CX brain trust estimated there may have been as many as 10,000 molting Shearwater in this group alone and we?d been seeing them spread out all day as well. First, can you believe friendly Minkes? One paced the Condor just yards away for several breathing cycles. The other Minkes, later on, were part of the bird-dolphin-sea lion-whale buffet and at a distance. The next pleasant oddity was several pelicans that alighted on the boat to preen and unfortunately, to poop. I have never seen this before... I mean the alighting on the boat thing... the other pelican behaviors mentioned are quite familiar! Next... all those sooty shearwaters... thousands I suspect and sharing their space and the food with some (Caspian?) terns, cormorants and gulls. Really, more shearwaters than I have seen before! On to the Humpbacks.... two spotted, but one disappeared immediately. The other one, familiar to Capt. Mat, allowed the Condor to pace it for quite a while. On several occasions, this whale lunge fed, sort of, but really skimmed the surface with its mouth open showing off its fine baleen. This whale provided nice fluke shots and had really short down times; a good whale. Now the conditions... flat, gray and still. About the people... lots of folks from across the pond today; at least 3 groups from the UK, with others from Spain and France. Also, the rarest of visitors... locals! Captains Mat and Dave on board and Tasha too serving up great lunches. Anna Hilliard and Brian Resnick as naturalist with yours truly doing PID. And.... I took only 2 photos, but one, I thought, was a good one... maybe even useful for ID purposes!! Gary Delanoeye -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... CA Brown Pelicans Sooty Shearwaters Cormorants Osprey (on top of a mast in the SB Harbor) Least Terns A good day to start, with sunshine in the morning. Capt. Dave let the folks know that we were going east, as that is where we knew Humpbacks and Minkes have been in the recent days. The Blues had moved west on past San Miguel Island, so we would not be visiting the islands today. So off we went, east, and it was not too long before we came on a couple of common dolphins, and I mean just a couple, maybe 6-8 total in this very small pod. The dolphins were here and there along the way, groups getting a little larger each time. Soon we encountered the Minke. This one was not as shy as their reputation has it, and hung around for a good bit, much to the guests delight. It even came fairly close to the Condor giving the folks some rally good looks. On east for a time and we came on a lone Humpback that was on a mission heading west. I would not say it was fast moving but it was definitely determined and doing so at a pretty good steady clip. Turning to follow, we soon realized, it was not interested in us at all. Interesting, as it gave a nice tail fluke very seldom along the way, staying very near the surface so no need to do the deep dive. But there were a few, and the folks got some nice photos of the ones offered. Soon this guy slowed down, turning north toward shore and began feeding. Some birds were about but not many, yet our Humpback was lounging around as if it had come across something nice. Here we got some decent tail flukes as it would diver much more often, basically in this same area. On east, again, to find more, and not too long we came on more Common Dolphins, this time a decent size pod of very active dolphins, much to the folk's delight and cameras were a hummin.' Next, our Cow/Calf pair and a nice pair it was. The youngster was not that young as it seemed to have some scaring on it's flank and back, so Capt. Dave estimated it to be a little more than a year. The Mom was quite content to let the youngster be on the boat side of her, giving the folks some very nice looks of the calf, and the two together. Mom gave us many nice flukes, and the little one tried on several occasions, but still was not able to flip that tail up just yet. It did get it out of the water toward the end of our visit, but just a bit, and just horizontal with the water, no showing the bottom side. These two were very near a rather wide area feeding frenzy, as the birds were definitely scarfing up. All listed birds here (except the Osprey) we on it. And what a show the pelicans put on, diving again, again, again, again, and again. Many would dive, gulp down it's prey, take off and right away, dive again. It almost seemed like it was raining pelicans. Nice, to say the least. Heading home we encountered two large pods of very active Common Dolphins, moving from here to there, many getting good air along the way, some even dong full breaches and flopping back into the water. As usual, babies galore, and cameras a hummin.' We had a full crowd of folk from all over, two families from France, one from Germany, another from Long Island, NY, a Naturalist from Arkansas, many locals, from Ojai, Carpinteria, and a couple in all the way from Santa Barbara. Captain Dave was right on with his prediction of where the whales were, with crew of Cassidy and Tasha, taking care of the folks and galley. Condor Staff Photographer Bob Perry was at it with is fine equipment as usual. Din Dal Bon was my CINC side kick for the day, doing the PID tasks, having fun trying to get that fluke shot of the calf, ... to no avail. As per usual, another fine and sunny day on the channel. Ken Tatro Gentle winds, mellow seas, and always, ? a fresh breath of salty air, ... to ya. After a good look at an oil platform, and a very few common dolphins, the Minkes appeared as on previous days. Once again, these Minkes provided several good views, quite close to the Condor. Throughout the rest of the day Minkes were here and there, even while the focus was on the 3 Humpbacks. The first pair of these was a mother-calf pair, apparently seen on previous trips and a friendly duo. At one point, they made a close approach, rolled upside down and went under the boat! Very Cool! The 3rd Humpback has become familiar (I photographed him on 8/17) and has earned the appellation "Chopper". No, this whale has no biker tattoos, but has earned the name from a rather unique behavior; this whale skims the surface with its mouth open providing guests with excellent views of its baleen. Then, this whale snaps its jaws shut! It's not "lunge feeding", but maybe a baleen cleaning maneuver or... who knows! The common dolphins were very spread out today but the shearwaters were again out in force. Pelican and Elegant Terns were noted too. On to the 80 humans... The following countries were represented on board... England, France, Germany, Columbia. Also, Puerto Rico, New York. And, the rarest of guests.... "Locals" including 6 of my friends! We escaped the fog as we sailed up the coast toward Santa Barbara. We found the Minkes, and Common Dolphins a few miles off the coast of Carpinteria. The Humpbacks surfaced just after we stopped to look at the Minkes. After a good look we headed further up the coast but failing to find anything of interest we doubled back to the 2 Humpbacks. The Condor X was there so we didn't stay long. We headed out toward Santa Rosa. Just east of the gap we encountered the pod of Bottlenose Dolphins with the Rissos swimming amongst them. 45 passengers, mostly international- 2 couples from Germany, 1 visitor from Korea, 1 from Wales, a family from Ireland, 3 young ladies from Switzerland. There were a couple of women from Michigan and a couple from Illinois . Good look at the cave. Everyone happy and no one got sea sick!. There was a line of birds, I assume they were Sooty Shearwaters, flying about a mile out from the shore. They were not in any formation, just a line that went on and on, going from east to west. I estimate at least a thousand in the short time I was there. Thought this was interesting. But, within 3 miles from the harbor Captain Mat had us alongside a a huge school of fish that seemed to have attracted a mega flock of Shearwaters, as well as at least 500 Common Dolphin, plus lots of active sea lions. We spotted a breaching Humpback farther east, and off shore Montecito came upon a Humpback cow and her juvenile calf. The pair casually swam in calm seas most of the time, but the calf spy hopped many times, and did about 5 breaches for our excited passengers. The mom fluked a few times as well. Captains Dave and Mat took us east to La Conchita, and along the way we witnessed another feeding frenzy supporting a 1,000 mega pod of Commons, and hundreds of Shearwaters within 2 miles of shore. On the way home we ran into our friendly cow and calf pair of Humpbacks again. The weather was vintage Santa Barbara and Ventura! The many European tourist on the boat loved the crystal clear tour along our "riviera". The many young kids aboard were thrilled by the dolphin antics, and were quick to notice over half of the dolphins were babies and juveniles. Tara Brown shared the interpretation chores with me and Carolyn McCleskey did the PID with great expertise, using her own I-Pad for the sighting report! Yours truly wished Captain Mat a warm goodbye, but I was happy to hear that he will remain on our Sanctuary Advisory Council throughout the rest of his term. He will remain afloat on our SB Channel waters. The next report from yours truly, and Tara Brown, will be from the islands and channels off the Croatian coast. There were moderate swells and wind, consequently we headed East in search of the recent sightings of the cow calf pair. On the way we encountered two small pods of commons and one moderate size pod of 300 with numerous calf's. We found the pair around midway through the trip and spent about an hour with them, much to the delight all the passengers . We had Lisa Angle on pid and Linda Taylor and myself as Naturalist's. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
