total count:
950 common dolphins2 lone humpbacks1 cow/calf pair humpbacksmany sooty shearwaters
The day was cloudy but very calm and Captain Matt took us along a shoreline route to find whales. We never got out far enough to see the islands due to the fog. We say several smaller pods of common dolphins and later found a large pod that played by the boat for awhile to the delight of passengers. All of the whales came fairly close to the boat and we were able to slowly follow them as they surfaced and fluked over and over next to the boat. We say one tail slap in the distance. Mom and baby also stayed alongside the boat for quite awhile, surfacing and diving in unison many times.
There were a number of smaller children who spent a lot of time between sightings at my "kids table" playing with the books and puzzles that are always in my bag!
About the time we got back to the harbor the sun came out and folks from China, Canada, Hungary, Germany, Britain and many locals left with many thank yous and big smiles! Thanks to Captain Matt for his efforts to find these whales and to crew Eric and Tosha in the galley.
