Oh so comfortable and spiffy. What a delight to have her back. June gloom.......hey it?s June 1st. And, FYI Capt Dave?s birthday! At times visibility down to less than 1/2 mile and 6 foot swells, but the Captains Mat and Dave found what we were looking for. We were actually off the east end of Santa Cruz, but who knew? Well, the ?electronics??navtronics? and all the other gizmos were keeping watch and ?knew.? We saw one surfacing of the humpback, picked off out of the fog by Bernardo Alps, it fluked and disappeared into the gloom not to be seen again. The blues were in an area not quite so foggy so we were able to get good looks. The contrast in size between the cow and calf was easy to see.......from all vantage points. It?s amazing, particularly when they surface after gulping their fill of krill. The commons were a great treat as usual. Who doesn?t love dolphins! Two hours out from Santa Barbara we were treated to over one hour of intense humpback, dolphin and bird activity in a massive feeding that seemed to have no end. Guests were delighted and the cameras did not stop the entire time. One juvenile put on an intense fluke slapping show that lasted several minutes. Dave, and crew members Tasha and Eric. Passengers included both locals and visitors from around the nation (Wisconsin, New York, etc.) and around the world (Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, etc.), many of them theoretical physicists visiting UCSB for a conference--there were plenty of smart questions! A large group of coastal bottlenose dolphins joined us soon after we left the harbor, an auspicious sign of things to come. As we traveled west, we encountered several groups of common dolphins feeding and then half a dozen humpbacks, including a cow-calf pair. We spent a good while in the area, encountering several other humpbacks, and then headed to the east end of Santa Cruz Island for excellent viewings of 6 blue whales. As we returned home, we came across a feeding frenzy including a megapod of 1000+ common dolphins, many sea birds, and even more humpbacks. A spectacular end to an exceptional day. The classic choices of chips and salsa were laid out on the table right away and, you guessed it, folk were chipping and dipping, as it was being poured. Talking about pouring, a nice variety of beverages were on hand, some representing local vintners fine creations, to the casual beers, and soft drinks were quenching the thirsts of the day. The $5 bucket was at the ready, for us all to chip in to cover the park and picnic support supplies, everyone joined in nicely, filling it to over flowing, ... heh, heh, ... well maybe not to over flowing, but you get we we mean. With the fire hot and ready, light smoke was rising to flavor the hot dogs, to sausages, to kabbabs, to burgers (veggie and carnivore types), to chicken, corn on the cob in the husks, to pork chops to beef steaks. All joined in on the communal BBQ, seasoning and doing them up to their own delightful tastes. What fun we had around those nice hot coals, giving each other our finer tips on how this or that should be cooked or seasoned. Great salads, full of greens and tomatoes, peas, asparagus, and pasta were brought in, with several choices of dressing, ... Aaaahhhh, ... and then of course, ... desserts, lip smackin' and a drulin.' ... right there, to satisfy any palate, ... were waiting the end of the meal. A good turn out of veterans and class of 2013 came to join in on the mixing of chit chat, WW and Island hike stories, and just pain enjoying and getting to know one another further. We had the '13ers introduce themselves and give is a bit of their background, and they were welcomed both personally, across the day, and by the whole, at their formal intros with a great round of applause. I was humbled to share a stage with giants in the cause for ocean health, but you shared it as well! My speech will be shared on line when I return, as I can't access my word documents ( from a internet cafe ). The Lifetime Acheivement award went to Dr. Jane Lubchenco, the recently retired Administrator of NOAA. The Leadership Award for 2013 went to Senator Sheldon Whitehouse of Road Island, a real warhorse for all causes ocean realated. My words were ammended to include an added recognition of heroism about the late Hawaii Senator Daniel Inouye, whose son gave a moving tribute to him just before I took the stage. Senator Inouye was in some ways the Jacque Cousteau of Hawaii, as well as a true war hero. Tara Brown and Shauna were the belles of the ball, both at my table. Tara is back in Santa Barbara right now, knapping on a Truth Aquadics boat before is disembarks with a Nature Bridge group in the early a,m.! Tara you are a real wonder woman! Today I continued my attendence at the Capitol Hill Ocean Week conference, as did Shauna. Of special note in today's sessions was a talk by Senator Begich of Alaska. He illuminated the realities about climate change in regard to the Arctic Sea. He is a conservative Republican, but he knows the Arctic is becoming a waterway that many neighboring countries want to exploit for resources and transportation, as it bcomes the fabled Northweast Passage:, right now! Also, he was very objective in saying he will wait for the EPA science study on- going right now, before he himself makes a decision on whether to support mining for huge deposites of gold and copper in the Bristol Bay watershed that has been Alaska's model to the rest of the world for sustainable salmon fishing. This productive fisheries has been based on scientificly based fishing, and protections for spawning in the very stream beds where the Pebble Mining Consortium wants to strip mine big time. Tomorrow there is a session on MPAs chaired by our own Representative Lois Capps. Tara and I had an interview with her yesterday at her offrice. Stay tuned. The day was perfect, overcast until noon, calm, no winds, and sun early in the afternoon. 5 miles out of the harbor, just off the oil rigs, Capt Matt found a multi-acre school of anchovies, with thousands of birds, dolphins, sea lions, and 7 gorging humpbacks. We stayed about 1.5 hrs, and saw multiple side-surface lunge feedings; one time about 50' feet off the bow, the whale showing off it's pink palette, and throat pleats. There were multiple shows of tail throwing. One individual put on a fantastic tail lobbing show, with 4 series of lobbing, slapping. Two of the series had 12 slaps each. Can humpbacks count? Maybe. And a beautiful final full-view pectoral fin wave. As a finale for the day's show, we watched a bald eagle soar across Frye's Harbor, and settle on a cliff-side. I am estimating about 40 passengers. June Gloom all day but calm seas and good visibility. The MNs were seen over 4 different sightings; always with several more spouts nearby that would raise the count considerably. One lunge feeding episode noted, a few breaches at a distance and peck-slapping. Lots of bait in the water and the gazillion common dolphins were all over the place, all the time. The 3 Rissos were less gregarious, noted when backing out of a surgy entrance to Painted Cave. The Bottlenoses... just inside the harbor upon the Condor X's return to Sea Landing. Busy on PID duty today... a 2-pager ! Dick Bellman interpreting the sights too, Capt. Mat, Eric and Tasha crewing and Bob Perry who got some of those peck-slapping shots, soon to be available on the website. It was nostalgic to be on the old Condor the last couple of months! BUT, even better to be back on the Condor Express! What a great and fast restoration with upgrades! Really amazing how quickly things got done!!! Really an exciting and enjoyable day out there today! Both my father and grandfather came to Southern California as immigrants to fish commercially the bountiful seas surrounding the Channel Islands. They became a part of what was then the most productive fishing industry in the world out of San Pedro. When I was a student my summer jobs often relied upon that same rich harvest. In my late teens, I witnessed my father make a very courageous transition. He became the Master Captain of the State F& G research fleet. That fleet sought answers as to why certain previously profitable fish species along the California coast were in sharp decline. Upon graduating from college with my teaching credential, I chose to live and teach where I could enjoy the Channel Islands. In doing so, I soon witnessed the 1969 Santa Barbara Oil Spill. That event made me decide to be a steward of the sea in my own right. Soon, the geography classes I taught had a special unit in local ocean conservation. I became a charter member of the Cousteau Society. Flashing forward many, many years, my acceptance into the CINC in 2006, became the highlight of my retirement years: basically because I was going to continue to teach about local ocean conservation, using a continually updated National Marine Sanctuary lesson plan! Volunteer organizations don?t get any better than the CINC! In 2011 we won the ?Take Pride in America? award for being the best volunteer program in the nation! We constantly share with visitors the latest science at work in the Sanctuary-and the many successes achieved. Let me share one of those successes with you which especially inspires me. In the four decades my father sailed through the waters of what is now the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary, he never saw a Blue Whale. They were not there! But, now, whale watch boats full of passengers are seeing them regularly come to feed on abundant krill in our Sanctuary. Before my dad passed on, and during my first year as a volunteer, I was able to share with him that I counted 20 spouting Blues in one August sighting! According to GrindTV, photojournalist Alistair McGlashan was marlin fishing in Australia when an amazing opportunity swam onto the scene. Alistair McGlashan/facebook Alistair McGlashan/facebook almcglashan/youtube almcglashan/youtube almcglashan/youtube almcglashan/youtube Thinkstock Alistair McGlashan/facebook Getty Images Getty Images PrevNext McGlashan jumped into the ocean to capture his crew's catch on camera so the photos could be used for documentation and published in magazines. The photojournalist was filming some of the stunning footage on his video camera when he suddenly felt a "swoosh" by his side. Before the crew could release their catch, an impressive photobomber swam into the frame. A 660-lb mako shark dashed past McGlashan and began attacking the marlin. McGlashan lived through the surprise encounter to share his story and jaw-dropping footage. "I've fished all my life and put in 200-plus days a year [on the water]. I get to see some amazing things, but the standout feature, the one thing that was most amazing and without a doubt the most scary, was swimming with a 330-kilo [660-pound] mako shark," McGlashan explained in his YouTube video. Message-ID: <779E0241-521F-4519-B3B3-D854210F94F8@me.com> Ocean People, Although belated, here is the the summary, as promised, on the concluding topic of Capitol Hill Ocean Week Symposium. It was titled: "MPA Work and Support a Vibrant Economy." Here is the key sentence describing the discussion: " As America's coastal communities redouble their efforts to attract stable and secure employment opportunities in the wake of the recession, the multiple benefits of preserving the best places in our ocean-including improved business prospects in the tourism and recreation sector-are opening American's eyes to the advantages of well designed and properly managed MPAs." To this end, stories from the Florida Keys and our Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuaries were used to explain success from opposite ends of a recreational use spectrum. The two main discussants were Jerry Ault, A Professor of Marine Biology & Fisheries from the Univ. of Miami, and Michael Cohen, the owner/director of the Santa Barbara Adventure Company. In the case of the Keys, there was a lot of discussion as to how recreational fishers are coming around to support MPAs. Now 85% of all fish catch for consumption in Florida comes from recreational catch. Most sport fishers now realize management has to be done the right way by them-and large fish are more valuable as reproductive machines, rather than as trophy catches. In the case of our California MPAs, Michael case a great account as to why healthy MPA protected coastlines and their healthy ecosystems enhance all the recreational experiences he seeks for his growing number of non-consumtive patrons. The gap between SCI and SRI was unusually sedate, so we arrived at Becher's Bay earlier than normal just as the bright sunshine pushed off the June marine layer. Capt Lee drove with able crew Paige, Matt and Scot to make the trip wonderful and safe. Lee's daughter Rachel, visiting for Daddy's Day and I (sans uniform) hiked the Torrey Pines Loop trail, stopped to admire Black Rock on the way back to the pier as well as beach-combed Water Canyon Beach. While in the pines, we had a close encounter with an Osprey, it was so beautiful as it took flight right in front of us! At Black Rick we saw oyster catchers, pigeon guillemots, western gulls and nearby we saw a red tail hawk. Lee wowed the passengers by taking us in Painted Cave (always a special treat on this trip) and just as we exited the cave and rounded Profile Point, a large group of Risso's appeared in front of us. We got some great views of these squid lovers. As we neared the rig line, word from the Island Explorer and Channel Islands Helo tours, alerted us to humpbacks in the area. We watched two humpbacks and hundreds of common dolphin enjoy a feeding frenzy complete with diving Sooty shearwaters, cormorants, western gulls and brown pelicans in he mix. Lots of pigeon Guillemots in the Channel, too. Don Gillies was on board to lead day visitors on the Cherry Canyon trail, and Kathy deWt-Oleson and Kat Wasden went home with us after working the weekend on island. Total cetacean sightings: 250 DC in AM 50 Risso's on return trip 2 humpbacks 500 DC with 100 babies in the mix Another quick sighting of 100 more common dolphins north of the rig line And, blue whale-sized blows near platform Grace. The trio broke into a single whale that the Condor followed for a while, and observed this one frolicking in the kelp. The other two were intercepted on the way north, towards UCSB, where reports from another ship indicated at least 4 MNs. Somewhere in transit, the Minke did a classic Minke appearance... brief. Oh, by the way, common dolphins were appearing almost continuously in view in small, moderate and almost large pods. The second view started with what appeared to be a large mom and her calf breaching. I counted 4 mom breaches and one baby. The Condor arrived on the scene to witness brilliant vertical lunge feeding... several times! The other 2 MNs were similarly at work about a half a mile away. Be sure to check out Bob Perry's photos because one of these whales did a weird "behavior". Was it a lunge, a breach? you decide. View online version. Four Things I?m Doing on Oceans in 2013 Tuesday, June 18, 2013 In the spirit of National Oceans Month, I wanted to update you on some of my recent work to protect our precious ocean resources: Ocean Acidification: Every day, the oceans absorb a tremendous amount of human-emitted carbon dioxide, which is jeopardizing marine ecosystems that support food production, jobs, and recreation. Last week I spoke on the House floor to call attention to this pressing issue and urge House leadership to take action on commonsense measures for healthy and productive oceans now and into the future. Capitol Hill Oceans Week: Earlier this month, ocean experts and practitioners gathered from around the country to discuss some of the pressing issues facing our oceans. I was delighted to introduce a panel discussion about the economic benefits of marine protected areas, and to meet with Paul Petrich, a Goleta resident who was awarded the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation?s 2013 Volunteer of the Year award for his outstanding service to the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary. National Ocean Policy: The Obama Administration recently released a plan for how to implement this overarching national policy for ocean management. I co-authored a letter to raise the profile of this action and commend the Administration on this significant milestone towards comprehensive, proactive management of our oceans. Coastal States Climate Change Planning Act (H.R. 764): Hurricanes Katrina and Sandy clearly demonstrated the serious toll our changing climate is taking on coastal communities. That is one reason why I authored this bill, which would help coastal states and communities plan and implement on-the-ground projects to adapt to the impacts of climate change. We are lucky to have such rich marine ecosystems on the Central Coast that support countless jobs, businesses, recreation opportunities, and so much more. That?s why I will continue to be a champion for our oceans and protect them for future generations. As always, please feel free to share this information with others who may be interested. Port of LA unveils plan for marine research center The Associated Press Published: Monday, Jun. 17, 2013 - 2:02 pm Last Modified: Monday, Jun. 17, 2013 - 7:23 pm LOS ANGELES -- Los Angeles port officials on Monday unveiled plans to create a $500 million marine research center called AltaSea. The project, developed through a public-private partnership between the port and universities, will be built on a 100-year-old wharf on the San Pedro waterfront. Officials cited Los Angeles' urban environment as a reason to invest in research at the port, which had been looking to diversify its uses - in addition to cargo - for years. The facility will have direct harbor and ocean access. AltaSea, previously dubbed "City Dock No. 1," will take 15 to 20 years to complete, using 28 acres to house labs with circulating seawater, classrooms and support facilities. The new research center will make LA the "premier location for addressing ocean-related environmental issues that are not only important to Southern California, but to the world," said outgoing mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. Villaraigosa said the partnership was expected to create jobs and lure new industries. The center will be built in two phases. The first phase, which will cost $155 million and is anchored by the Southern California Marine Institute, is expected to be completed in 2018. Funding includes a $25 million gift from the Annenberg Foundation to kick off the development. Officials said the AltaSea project will create 1,087 construction jobs, and the second phase will create an additional 4,161 jobs. The development's environmental impact report was approved by the harbor commission in October. Good to see you yesterday and again congratulations!

FYI, I have indeed spotted our wonderful island jay at Scorpion Ranch surroundings. Usually on a given day I see a pair and possibly two pair. First siting made by myself this past February, 2013.

I will be watching for the Shrike as well!

Thanks for the information on our feathered friends.

We camped the night prior and spread the word campsite to campsite and even on the beach. Although the weather was fantastic beach weather, we had to tell those visiting our shores for the first time that their CINP did exist 20+ miles of shore! Summer evaporation haze made the islands invisible all weekend. However, many beach goers did see Bottle nose dolphin cruise the shoreline. Only two families present were not from California, and the out-of- staters were from neighboring western states. A higher than normal percentage said they had been whale watching, and to our CINP: Maybe 33% the former, and 20% the latter. We had lots of good questions and many came forward to our whale kit and display table at the end where we had pamphlets and whale watching plus CINP access info for them. Again, the State Park audiences are almost tall families, with at least 50% being kids. It was a good outing. We will e at Carpinteria State Beach next Saturday night, 8:30. Cormorants Pelicans Sooty Shearwaters Pigeon Gillemonts Western Gulls one nesting on the cliff at Painted Cave entrance, with two Chicks in Gray. Sea Lions galore Harbor Seals on the beach on Santa Cruz Island. An interesting day, to be sure. Not forty minuets into this all day trip, we encountered a cow calf pair of Humpbacks. Right away the juvenile, say about 1-1/2 years old, began to perform. Tail lob, Pec slap and then a full breach out of nowhere, and with several big gun cameras on board and shooting away, it was a fellow with a very small 2" x 3" camera that got the full breach shot. Then the "little one" gave us another 3/4 breach off to its left side. A little later, not much later, it gave us another tail lob, ... and that was it!! Show is over, no more on the schedule for the day. And sure enough, we saw more Humpbacks, but all of these were on a mission to get from point A to point B, knocking down a steady 8 knots heading west. First it was the two with the performing yearling. After the show they were off to the parts unknown somewhere west of here, and in a hurry. Then we came on another pair, and it was the same, 8 knots steady as she goes, heading west. Later we picked up four more spread out in front of us, doing the same, 8 Knots, steady, heading west. So not much in the fluke shows, one ore two her and there. They all were fast moving just under the surface and doing little if any diving. We spoke with Capt. Mat on the Condor, up channel, and he was seeing similar activity only the whales he was seeing, were heading east, ... toward us. Our best guess, there is a Humpback conference going on and they are late getting there. Soon, they hung a right and were heading north, toward shore. We broke off at that point, wanting to head for the Islands. Beside that, we did not have an invite to the conference, so quite likely, we would not have been admitted anyway. All this time we passed several feeding frenzies of birds and Dolphins, yet the Humpbacks were not a bit interested in any of them. they were on a mission, to, ... ???? and had to book it. None of the feeding frenzies were that large, so the dolphin's count were scattered across all of them, with on exception, a train of about 500 buzzed right in front of us, port to starboard, on a mission like the Humpbacks. Yet the birds were into the frenzies big time with pelicans diving again and again at each of the frenzies. So, like we said, a different and interesting day. We headed to Santa Cruz and pulled into Painted Came, yep the new IPCO boat goes in just fine. We had some 66 folks from all over, Sacramento, CA; Phoenix, AZ, via Seattle (on vacation); Missouri("We don't have too many whales in Missouri"); Ventura(happy birthday Mike), among others. One gentleman was on his third WW and saw his first whales today. Score that for Capt. Alex and crew. There were a few youngsters on board, two with their binoculars at the ready, they all had a good time of it. Skipper Captain Alex did a great job of narrating, and finding whales, with Lurie and Capt Steve doing crew and galley work respectfully, or was it the other way around. Jackpot day on the Condor X, with Captains Mat and Dave alternating at the helm, 17+ Humpbacks! 5,000+ Common Dolphin! Boating over very calm seas, but through some early fog, Captain Mat took about 50 passengers to the first of three humungus feeding frenzies sighted today. This first one was mainland side of the shipping lanes. As the fog lifted, all aboard were treated to a huge display of feeding shearwaters ( in the hundreds ) with a sprinkling of Pelicans, along with a conservative count of 500 Common Dolphin ( me thinks short beak ). Whale spouts were aplenty, way out over a mile on both sides of us! Don Shubert, PID, recorded 6 identifiable Humpbacks close in. As we finished with this sighting,, one of them, who had his or her full, came to the boat to people watch! It swam from side to side across the bow, and got a good look at all of us! This huge bait patch was either sardines or anchovies, the captains surmised. There was more to come. As we entered CINMS waters another huge feeding frenzy was sighted, This time Captain Dave guided us to the show. Again, Shearwaters were in the hundreds, the sprinkling of Pelicans were joined in same numbers by Sea Lions, and again, whale spouts were aplenty way off on the perimeter of the feeding, over a mile away all around us. I counted 10 distant spouts in one direction. But the identifiable whales this time numbered 4 Humpbacks, and the Common dolphin were counted by Don as a mega pod of 3,000! They were constantly active near the boat, bow riding, and feeding as far as our eyes could see. The finale to the sighting came as Captain Mat decided to move out. One Humpback began playing with a patch of offshore kelp. It peck flapped, rolled, spy-hopped, tail flopped and seemingly threw the kelp. Our passengers, many from diverse countries in Europe, next got treated to a great calm water narrated tour of the north shore of Santa Cruz Island, to Prisoner's Harbor. On te way back to Santa Barbara, still inside Sanctuary waters, we were treated to yet another huge feeding frenzy on bait fish. This time the conservative count of Commons was 2,000. The identifiable whales were 7 Humpbacks. However, as we left for home I saw in the far distant perimeter of this feeding frenzy, a whale breaching and splashing over and over again! Debbie Shelly was the other naturalist kept very active today. And Sasha was in the galley. All of us aboard as crew and CINC ranked this trip as one of our top ones ever! Also, one couple aboard from North Carolina, who had watched as addicts, whale watch documentaries on TV for years, but had never been on a real whale watch, said the real thing trumps all the all the reality shows they saw! This was a good showing, considering most stayed on a very crowded beach to beat the heat late into the day, starting dinner later than usual. Tara Brown and Shirley Johnson were the usual Carp Crew helping out, and Debbie Shelley was a very welcome newcomer! As usual, at the State Beach outreaches, our crowd was decidedly Californian ( 1 family from Arizona and 1 from the Midwest ). Half had never been whale watching, and only 25% had been to our CINP. Exactly 50% were kids. We had seven dogs, all decidedly more well behaved than the two raccoons that began screaming and fighting at the top a tree adjacent to the outdoor theater in the middle of our presentation ( census by Shelly! ). Highlights of this show were Shirley's animated description of the very acrobatic Humpback she saw on her last boat outing, and Tara's always mesmerizing Chumash story of the Rainbow Bridge. Also, your's truly was delighted to her a few children addressing their mothers as they came forward at the end to our display table, as "Mamma Mammal". ( They having learned that the word "Mamma" derives from the obviously related description of what a mammal is). Beat the heat on or in the sea! Of course this would be close to the Harbor Seal rookery, but the pupping season is over.
