A great day on the water, with Carol Celic on PID, Capt. Dave, and crew members Tasha and Eric. Passengers included both locals and visitors from around the nation (Wisconsin, New York, etc.) and around the world (Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, etc.), many of them theoretical physicists visiting UCSB for a conference--there were plenty of smart questions! A large group of coastal bottlenose dolphins joined us soon after we left the harbor, an auspicious sign of things to come. As we traveled west, we encountered several groups of common dolphins feeding and then half a dozen humpbacks, including a cow-calf pair. We spent a good while in the area, encountering several other humpbacks, and then headed to the east end of Santa Cruz Island for excellent viewings of 6 blue whales. As we returned home, we came across a feeding frenzy including a megapod of 1000+ common dolphins, many sea birds, and even more humpbacks. A spectacular end to an exceptional day.
