Four Things I’m Doing on Oceans in 2013

Tuesday, June 18, 2013

In the spirit of
National Oceans Month, I wanted to update you on some of my recent work to protect our precious ocean resources:

Ocean Acidification: Every day, the oceans absorb a tremendous amount of human-emitted carbon dioxide, which is
jeopardizing marine ecosystems that support food production, jobs, and recreation. Last week
I spoke on the House floor to call attention to this pressing issue and urge House leadership to take action on commonsense measures for healthy and productive oceans now and into the future.
Capitol Hill Oceans Week: Earlier this month,
ocean experts and practitioners gathered from around the country to discuss some of the pressing issues facing our oceans. I was delighted to introduce a panel discussion about the economic benefits of marine protected areas, and to meet with
Paul Petrich, a Goleta resident who was awarded the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation’s 2013 Volunteer of the Year award for his outstanding service to the Channel Islands National Marine
 Sanctuary.
National Ocean Policy: The Obama Administration
recently released a plan for how to implement this overarching national policy for ocean management. I co-authored a
letter to raise the profile of this action and commend the Administration on this significant milestone towards comprehensive, proactive management of our oceans.
Coastal States Climate Change Planning Act (H.R. 764):
Hurricanes Katrina and Sandy clearly demonstrated the serious toll our changing climate is taking on coastal communities. That is one reason why I authored this bill, which would help coastal states and communities plan and implement on-the-ground projects
to adapt to the impacts of climate change.
We are lucky to have such rich marine ecosystems on the Central Coast that support countless jobs, businesses, recreation opportunities,
and so much more. That’s why I will continue to be a champion for our oceans and protect them for future generations.
As always, please feel free to share this information with others who may be interested. Please keep in touch with me by liking my
Facebook page, following me on
Twitter, or
sending me an e-mail.

Sincerely,

Lois Capps
