The AM trip aboard the Islander encountered 2 Gray's near platform Grace. These two spent little time at the surface making viewing somewhat challenging. The additional 3 Gray's were sighted just off Cavern Pt. A couple of small pods of dolphins were also encountered. With the seas already "lumpy' and despite predictions of the weather building, Captain Dave in consultation with the office decided to make the PM run. Good decision. It was moderately rough out to Anacapa where upon we cruised the south side in flat seas devoid of wind. As we neared the Anacapa Passage there were numerous spouts sighted. Captain Dave got the Islander situated on 5 Gray's who provided the passengers with some outstanding looks. Aboard with Captain Dave were crew members Luke and Paige as well as passengers from such diverse places as Germany, China, Denmark, Netherlands, Florida, Colorado and a few other assorted states. I was pleased to have fellow naturalist Rose Medina aboard along with one member of the naturalist class of 2013, Gail Graham. All agreed that it was another wonderful day in the SB Channel. Enjoy the sleepless nights, Anthony. Bottom line: 250 Common Dolphins 4 Fin Whales 1 Stellar Sea Lion It was an absolutely wonderful day aboard the Islander (only a PM trip). I was fortunate to be aboard with a large contingency from one of the Gordon conferences. As many of you know that creates a virtual United Nations of passengers with guests from Croatia, Sweden, Austria, Denmark, France, Argentina, Japan and Portugal, to name some of the countries represented. These amazing people were here learn more about Glial Biology (I can actually converse, somewhat, on that topic) and Glycobiology (now we're speaking a foreign language). Fortunately these individuals are always not only brilliant but extremely nice people who don't make me feel too ignorant. We also had on board, non scientific people from places such as Maryland, Utah, Minnesota and Wisconsin. Yes, I know the forecast called for rain, but again the weather forecasters proved themselves wrong. Calm seas, with only very moderate winds from the southwest. Despite almost 100% cloud cover, the viewing conditions were very close to perfect. Our initial sighting was the Stellar Sea Lion perched on the buoy just outside of Ventura Harbor. Later we were afforded great views of Common Dolphins on the way towards Anacapa. This followed an uneventful cruise along the underwater cliff line. On the back side of Anacapa, directly south of Cat Rock we encountered the 4 Fin Whales, which afforded GREAT looks over a period of approximately 45 minutes. It appeared as if there was one Humpback in the distance, however, we were unable to verify that. Captain Anthony, aka "new papa" was aided by Joel and Danni who not only took care of passengers but provided outstanding narration. Joel is becoming the "go to guy" for birds. I was also happy to have another member of the naturalist class of 2013, Roberta Soto, aboard the vessel. Dick Bellman -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... His wife Hiroko was at his side. Fred was the founder, owner and operator of the Condor Express, and was a pioneer in the realm of local sportfishing and later, whale watching. Fred was born on July 6, 1938 and hailed from Ohio. He had worked as a pharmaceutical salesman for Pfizer, who eventually moved Fred to new expanded territories in California. Old timers may remember the fishing vessels Hornet and Sea Hawk, or the bait boat Scout that worked out of Sea Landing, all of which were originally owned by Fred Benko. Fred spent late 1978 and early 1979 building the original Condor in Willmington, California and it was launched in May, 1979. The Condor was a sportfishing vessel that worked the Channel Islands, and eventually took up whale watching after seismic testing by oil companies stopped and whales returned to the area in great abundance. Fred was an innovator, known for devloping the art of shallow water rockfishing and for his passion, whale watching in the Santa Barbara Channel. In March, 2002, the Condor Express was launched and was dedicated to whale watching and party cruises. The Condor Express revolutionized whale watching by prividing a very stable, high speed viewing platform. Fred was an inspiration to all of us and will be greatly missed. Information about services and a celebration of Fred's life will be forthcoming. Hi everyone! Fun trip on the Condor Express today, 3/8/13, with Captain Dave at the helm and Tasha and Matt crewing!? Larry D., Carolyn M., Don G.-PID, and I interpreted to the guests, especially when seeing multiple gray whales in separate sightings!? We had one right off the coast at the beginning of the trip, one breaching! in front of Hendry's, and one a little further SW very close to the boat just snorkeling.? They all seemed to be lone juveniles, but well weaned.? The third's head was very saturated with parasites for being so young! In the old days, he ran all of the whale watches and all of the island trips (there was no concession then) for the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History. I've never met a better skipper or a finer human being. Fred was bright gracious, generous, and kind. He was also funny, crazy (in those days), and always a wonderful raconteur. He did a superb job of creating and running Sea Landing, the Condor, and subsequently the Condor Express. He gave generously to causes and cared deeply about the environment. Fred very quickly became an integral part of the fabric of Santa Barbara. His is an enormous loss for our community; he cannot be replaced. Fair seas and a following wind, old friend. The Bald Eagle nesting population is getting off to another good year. Seven pairs are now nesting on Catalina, two on Santa Cruz, and things look good on Santa Rosa and San Miguel. I was not carrying my notebook, but Peter was happy about the overall numbers, stating they were around 70 for all the Channel Islands. Of special note: Peter said that the Peregrine Falcon has rebounded from DDT devastation on the islands to be even more numerous than the Bald Eagles! He said there are 16 pairs on Santa Cruz Island alone, and healthy numbers of pairs on both Santa Rosa and San Miguel ( I think about ten pair on each island ). He has not yet researched the numbers on San Clemente and San Nicholas, and I am not certain about what he said the numbers were on Catalina-but the total picture of the rebound for both species on our Channel Islands was good. Capt Fred Benko (1938 - 2013) built the Condor and operated it as a sport fishing boat AND it was the original whale watching boat for the Santa Barbara Channel until 2002 when Fred's "new" boat, the Condor Express, came to town. The old Condor, under the management of the owner and crew of the Condor Express, will service our whale watching enthusiasts temporarily until repairs are made and the CX comes home. At this time no accurate estimate is possible for the return of the CX to SB, but we are all keeping our fingers crossed and working hard with an eye towards early Summer. See you on board! The Condor was the boat used for many years by the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History for its whale-watching. It was the platform on which the museum's old Whale Corps, which featured Shauna at the helm and Fred as a primal force in the birthing, was based. It was used by us at the museum for many years for island trips to San Miguel and Santa Cruz, with some memorable multi-island trips (Anacapa, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, San Miguel, and Santa Barbara islands) undertaken also. For a number of years, in the late 70's and through the 80's, it felt as if Chuck Woodhouse and I almost lived on the boat.....the stories, and the ghosts, come flooding back and are almost overwhelming.......getting nearly blown into the water off Santa Rosa while in my sleeping bag on the upper deck, the museum staff who fell off the top of the wheelhouse during a late-night tryst, sucking a panga into the propeller at Cuyler Harbor, having a 300 gallon water container coming unmoored on the upper deck while crossing the Potato Patch, loading people into a panga in Cuyler Harbor amidst a sudden weather change with waves that almost reached the cliffs,,,, but most of all Fred's enormous grin and inexhaustible good humor no matter what the circumstances. There was no quirk of weather or equipment malfunction that could disturb his equilibrium. He was as much a force of nature as any of the elements, and the Condor was almost a physical extension of him. There's a lot of wonderful history on that boat.....I hope you all take time to listen to the spirits on it when next you sail. We headed out in the AM with 18 guests and once we made it out past the channel the visibility picked up and we were join by a small pod of common dolphins probably about 100 or so. Not long after that we found 2 gray whales heading north and we were able to follow them for quite awhile and got to see some nice views of flukes. The PM trip we had 68 guests from all over; from Ventura, Toronto, Oklahoma and Europe. Nice mix of people. Same conditions as before lots of coastal fog but once we got over to Santa Cruz viz improved and we were treated to seeing a Fin whale. Didn't stick around for long but everyone got to see it. We headed over towards the backside of Anacapa and were treated to a very large pod of common dolphins probably close to 1000 and the photographers of the group were able to get lots of images of bow riding and wake riding. Pretty amazing. After that we came upon 3 gray whales and were able to follow them for quite some time and got great looks of flukes etc. Definitely a good time had by all of us. (The chart is the same as the one sent to all of us by Dave Begun.) __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Hi Barbara, Unfortunately, our office is completely staffed by volunteers and the current status document is in the process of being updated. I have attached a chart that shows the current official numbers of each of the islands. You will see that while the San Nicolas Island fox number is down from 2008 it is comparable to 2010 (see graph section). It is normal for population numbers to fluctuate. Some of the official numbers for San Nicolas and San Clemente are estimates as complete population surveys on the Navy islands are not always generated annually because these two subspecies are not endangered. The populations on these two islands are quite robust for the available natural resources. Some of the extreme fluctuations in the reported numbers for the Navy islands are an artifact of changes in computer programs that model populations. The increase seen in the San Clemente Island foxes is the result of greater population counting and study, rather than a physical doubling of the island fox population. Computer modeling of complete populations using a sample of captured animals is never foolproof and different computer programs result in different population projections. There was a change between 2008 and 2010 in how the total population was estimated on San Clemente. The San Nicolas Island fox does face challenges from human habitation of the island: automobile traffic is the greatest cause of unnatural mortality on this island, rodenticide and toxic chemicals dumped on the island after WW2 impact some island foxes as well. Feral cats competed with island foxes for the limited prey on the island. In a move to protect the island foxes, the Navy successfully removed ~50 feral cats in 2009/2010. (Healthy cats were relocated to a rescue facility in San Diego county.) Despite the active military training that occurs on San Nicolas Island, the island foxes are doing well there and the Navy biologists are devoted to seeing this population is protected. Climate change may be impacting island foxes on San Nicolas Island more than on the northern islands. Low rainfall levels reduce both plant food and prey for the island fox. San Nicolas Island is the driest of the Channel Islands. There are no natural trees, only low scrub, dunes and dry rocky areas. It is natural for island foxes to produce fewer offspring in years of minimal precipitation and some drop in the population may be related to the last three years of average or lower than average rainfall. The San Nicolas Island fox population does appear to be less than it was in 2008, but it not considered to be declining. San Nicolas Island is very small and it has the greatest island fox density, more foxes per square kilometer than any other fox species anywhere else in the world. The population in 1994 and in 2008 was at an unsustainable highpoint. The official 2011 population of ~500 is closer to the average steady population number. Official numbers for 2012 will be available in June. I hope that I have answered your question. We appreciate your interest in the island fox and hope you will contact us if you have any further questions. Morning trip was cold and almost fruitless until the end when we found 3 gray whales very near Port Hueneme. We spent about a half hour with them and they seemed to be engaging in mating behavior (splashing, rolling, tail flukes) when we had to head home for the afternoon trip. We also saw a very small pod of common dolphins and a very tiny baby California Sea Lion playing alongside the boat while we were watching the Sea Lions on the Gina can buoy. Shortly after leaving the harbor for the afternoon trip, we spotted what we believed were the same 3 gray whales, still near Port Hueneme. this time is was very obvious that they were mating. Passengers were able to witness numerous flukes, rolls, and YES, that bright pink thing I learned to call the Pink Floyd when I was down in San Ignacio Lagoon a couple of weeks ago!!! We actually saw the Pink Floyd twice!! The behavior was very active and numerous times the whales were surfacing tangled together with tails and fins flopping around! It was truly an amazing sight for everyone. After leaving the area to allow the Islander a closer look, Frank took us out to Gina to see the California Sea Lions, but no baby this time. Both trips were sell out crowds and Captain Frank kept them informed with a terrific narrative while Eddie took photos and poor Paul was swamped at the galley. Passengers were mostly Southern California folks and there were a number of kids on both trips who enjoyed my kids table with books, puzzles and marine animals. Here is where the crew and visitors were entertained by the Greys. They didn't seem to mind us being there and so we stayed until it was time to head back to the harbor. As always the visitors on the boat loved the dolphins as they swam with the boat. Many of the passengers on the boat were local and included some from Simi and the San Fernando Valley and a few were repeat whale watchers. We did have folks from Montana and Kansas on board. PM - Two Grey Whales Dolphins One (very curious and frisky) Humpback The afternoon trip started with a clearing sky and a bunch of excited passengers. Dolphins greeted us early in the trip and got everybody's attention. Then we spotted a couple grey whales who really didn't like our company. We tracked them for a bit then the crew decided it was time to leave these guys alone and find other whales. We came upon a lone humpback who really liked our company. Not only did this guy hang around but swam very close to the boat, several times, amazing the passengers on board. Passengers on board included some folks from Texas and a group of about 30 older folks from Tulare. My thanks to the Captain and very able crew who continue to teach not only the guest passengers on board but also us 'newbie' (and all) naturalists. About 2 hours into the trip we encountered a lone Humpback about 2 miles off the east end of Anacapa. He mugged the boat for the next hour, swimming close alongside and passing repeatedly under us and popping up on either side, at one point even pressing the tip of his snout up against the boat and rising a few feet out of the water (forgive the "he" reference, it just sounds better than "it" and we had no idea whether male or female). Everyone was delighted and eventually he swam about 100 yards away and we were able to back off and head back to shore. We stopped briefly for a small pod of dolphins on the way back and arrived in port only slightly late to pick up a new load of passengers. After continuing the length of the island and heading back towards the coast, we came upon two Grays, near platform Gail, which the Ranger 85 was already viewing. They seemingly did a lot of snorkeling because despite a day with virtually no wind, there was hardly a spout to be seen. Nonetheless we were afforded some decent looks at these creatures. The afternoon featured another large group of over 100 passengers, with the majority being scientists from the Gordon Conference. As usual these folks were delightful, interesting, interested and represented locales from around the world. it was a delight to be in the company of these folks. Again, as we approached platform Gail, we observed a number of huge breaches. It was another pair, juveniles, of Gray Whales. Numerous breaches were observed, much to the delight of this international crowd. Again, off the backside of west Anacapa we encountered hundreds of common dolphins, which as in the am provided some spectacular viewing. Captain Anthony was assisted by Steve, and Michael with Andrea helping out the the student group in the morning. Marsha Brumana and Michale Foutain of the Naturalist class of 2013 were also aboard. Captain Tyler and deck hand Quincy found us whales on both trips. 10 a.m. trip: 5 Gray Whales. 1 p.m.trip: 4 Gray Whales and 200 Common Dolphin On both trips we spotted all of our whales within a half mile of shore, all going west constantly, except for one curious antic by a juvenile on the second trip ( described below!). All were sighted west of Santa Barbara Harbor except for the one mentioned below. We had 19 passengers on the first trip, including a family from Germany. Half aboard had never seen a whale. One of these was an old classmate from San Pedro HS who I have shamed for years for that un-Pedro like deficiency. On the second trip we had 24 passengers, with a surprising number from land-locked locales like Idaho, Wyoming, and Switzerland. Immediately outside Santa Barbara Harbor, before I could finish quizzing passengers about the identity of the pinepeds on the buoy just outside the harbor, a spouting Gray juvenile rose up right next to the boat to steal the show! Captain Tyler cruised westward as the whales escort ( it being well over 100 yds shoreside ) all the way to the Mesa Lane steps and adjacent to the UCSB research buoys there. Here the juvenile whale turned around, and lolly-gagged in the area a short while, doing some diving. It is at this location Captain Tyler said he has seen female Grays dive down with their calves to murk-up the sandy bottom that exists there. As we cruised the adjacent to this whale its sped was exactly 3.5 knots per hour. On the way to port finishing off the last trip, Captain Tyler diverted to go south off shore a mile and a half to check out some feeding bird activity. There we were all were amazed at the feeding frenzy occurring. Tens of Brown Pelicans, Cormorants, and Wester Gulls were actively diving and circling amid active sea lions and the 200 Common Dolphin. I surmised they were all feeding on Sardines, which seem to be on the upswing in the Channel since there disappearance in the 1960s. Our trip out on the rollers was a fun one that most aboard really enjoyed! Keep on Swimmin, Paul Petrich -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... It was a beautiful afternoon on the Condor today March 22, 2013!? Sightings: 5 Gray Whales ~650 Common Dolphins 3 Sea Lions Captain Mike and crew lead a group of college students from Bakersfield College out on the water today for the afternoon outing. ?We had CINC volunteers Larry Driscoll, Sally Eagle, and myself, Steffanie Wise for my certification trip. ?Visibility was about 10 nautical miles with a three foot swell. ?We started off the trip with a single gray whale heading up the coast where we came across 3 sea lions feeding among a group of western gulls and about 6 California Brown Pelicans. ?Later we spotted another gray whale heading in the same direction. ?Then a group of 4 juvenile gray whales was spotted that swam along side the boat for a good twenty minutes or so at about 100-200 yards. ?The passengers were very excited to see a large pod of roughly 650 common dolphins, riding the bow waves and swimming in from the horizon. ?Overall, it was a very sunny and educational trip! The students asked very insightful questions and expressed how they would love to come back for the Humpbacks and Blue Whales. ?:) Steffanie Wise ? While still at the dock we saw a couple of California Sea Lions swimming slowly into the harbor right behind the boat. Soon after leaving the harbor we found a very small pod of common dolphins who gave just enough of a show to delight passengers. Heading out towards Gina we spotted some fin whales ahead of us and as we got closer we realized there were 3 of them. Passengers got very clear looks at the sleek bodies and the well defined fins. At first they seemed to be feeding and not moving much but after awhile they began moving out toward Anacapa at a speed estimated by Dustin to be between 10 and 20 knots. We stayed with these whales, who were somewhat shy, for quite awhile. We continued to look for more whales and Captain Dustin finally said we had to turn around and return to the harbor. On the way back (about 5 miles from the harbor) we came across 3 mating gray whales who delighted everyone with tails, fins, close up views of backs and barnacles. Since the afternoon trip had been cancelled due to anticipated rough weather we stayed with these whales for about an hour, arriving late back to the docks...but who cared with such wonderful views over and over and no afternoon trip waiting!! We saw so many clear spouts from both types of whales that passengers were able to really see the difference between the two. On the way back in we saw at least 5 or 7 more whales in the distance and during the trip we saw a number of the common birds seen in the area...Brown Pelicans, Western Gulls, Western Greves, Cormorants. The skies were clear, the wind was low but the swells were quite large during the early part of the trip. > > Keri Dearborn, Education Director > Friends of the Island Fox > A Program of the Channel Islands National Park > _______________________________________________ > Channel_islands_naturalist_corps mailing list > Channel_islands_naturalist_corps at rain.org > http://www.rain.org/mailman/listinfo/channel_islands_naturalist_corps -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Sorry, I forgot which one was coming or going! Anyway, Captain Lee skippered a full boat out to Scorpion Anchorage, and crew-members Paul. Dani, and Joel catered to their needs. We sighted two pods of feeding Common Dolphin ( 500 and 1,000+ ), the last pod being a mega-pod within the Sanctuary boundaries. Captain Lee also spotted a lone Minke Whale close to the same location. Everyone got off at Scorpion, Including a lot of campers and kayakers. A few of the younger ones took me up on the Junior Ranger challenge. Amongst the day-trippers, were 35 college students from all over the nation belonging to the non-profit Student Conservation Association. They gave up their Spring Break fun time to volunteer at pulling weeds and planting native plants at sites along the Malibu coast in State Park lands. They are camping at Sycamore Canyon State Beach but got their day-off treat today with the trip to our CINP. My hike to Cavern Point had 21 very inquisitive troopers from all over our country. We saw fox right at the beginning of our hike, which lead to a necessary change in my script sequence! This group was especially good at locating chert along the trail after leaving the diatomaceous earth outcropping ( of course they cooperated by throwing it back on the trail after passing on the chert for viewing ). Captain Anthony skippered the whale watch boat that fetched the last of us to stay on the island for the day. I'm sure you will get their report about what seamed to be a very successful day for whales and seabirds for them. The seas were calm going and coming from the island, and it was pleasant shirt sleeve weather during the hikes. Everything is still green, but starting to brown already. Visibility was not quite channel width quality. Paul Petrich -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The noon trip had about 50 passengers and we saw two different gray whales on that trip along with a large pod of common dolphins and a bottlenose. They were also going out again at 3:00 PM but I wasn't able to go on that one. Dave was the whale watching narrator and Scott and Mike from the Condor were the captain and crew. I was on the 0300 trip and was the only Naturalist. Exciting for me as I am one of the newest members to the Corp. Class of 2013. There were about 50 people on board. Folks form Great Britain, Japan,Germany and several visitors from the mid west as well. This made for very interesting group. Many children hoping to see dolphins were disappointed when they were no where to be found. The Grays however were in abundance this afternoon. We came across a few lone travelers and then two groups. One consisting of 3-4 Grays the other 2-3. We were treated to a few breaches from one of our final sightings right outside the harbor heading in for the day. Captain Dave gave the little girls from Germany, sad from the lack of dolphins, vouchers to come back tomorrow. I told them I would also be back tomorrow and looked forward to seeing them again.? MORNING RUN, 3/28/13 Message-ID: CINC, Ralph Daniel (newest member, certify today), Larry Driscoll (trainer), Roberta Sota (recently certified) *The people:* We had a full boat, with ~50 excited 2nd graders from Valencia Legacy Christian School, their teachers, and ~45 parents. There were also a few other young couples from S. California with 2 year-olds aboard as well. The 2nd graders were quite well behaved, and had actually learned something about whales at school before the trip; i.e., they knew the difference between baleen and toothed whales! The boys were a bit more interested in learning about orcas and sharks than the girls. The girls were intrigued with how baleen hangs from the upper jaw, particularly when I held the baleen sample near my upper lip. *The whales:* We had an extremely calm, though overcast morning. In spite of the limited visibility we spotted 2 shy mostly-snorkeling gray whales, later a group of 3 bolder grays (one juvenile) who allowed us to get excellent views of them diving, swimming, with good fluke views, and finally a fin whale near the western tip of Anacapa (my first fin sighting ever!). And to the great joy of all, especially the kids, we encountered a small pod of 25 or so common dolphins on the return to Ventura. Everyone was delighted with the trip. *Intro talk:* Contrary to what all of us have read, the captains at Island Packers are very supportive of and desire us to continue to give an introductory talk as the boat is about to head out. Captain Dave encouraged us to give the talk, ?just don?t tell them everything on the way out, save some for later in the boat ride?. Dave and his co-captain gave quite extensive comments as well on various marine mammals over the PA. Ralph Daniel -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Mike at the helm and Capt. Dave doing the narrative we headed West, pausing briefly for the obligatory view of Sea Lions at the Buoy and speaking of Pinnipeds, Capt Dave shared that yesterday he?d seen a Steller Sea Lion, which is definitely not an everyday occurrence this far south. No sooner had we passed Santa Barbara Point and less than a half mile off the coast we encountered our first sighting, a group of 75 Common Dolphins who came out of nowhere. They circled us and we circled them and everyone had goods looks, however no bow or wake riding was observed, as I suspect the boat speed was insufficient to create pressure wakes. Getting a tip from the DD we worked our way further West and found two Gray?s moving at their normal 3 kt. pace, both juveniles, one in the 25? range and the other slightly larger at approx, 30?. The smaller Gray was heavily barnacled on the rostrum and the other had a large white patch on the left tail stock, which was distinctive and being on PID duty, I imaged this uniqueness. After 30 minutes of keeping pace with this pair, we broke away and again headed west as far a the Goleta Pier where we headed off the coast several miles and started our slow return to the harbor when Capt Mike noted several blows a few miles in front of us and within 400-500 yds of shore. At this point we spotted numerous other blows with four grays in one group milling right in front of us, rolling on their sides, showing flutes, breaching, spyhopping, fluking, pretty much cavorting about, enjoying a little interlude before getting back to business and their journey north. Another group of three appeared but we maintain our position with the four and Captain Mike mentioned, ?this was the best day I?ve had since I arrived? and indeed these were not the shy, stealth types. Spring break brought out many parents, with their kids and a sprinkling of folks from out of the country for a total of 70 whale enthusiast. While it was cloudy, with limited visibility (4-5 miles) there was little wind and small swell. The northern migration is definitely in full swing! All in all a very pleasant day on the briny deep and as always a joy to work with fellow naturalist Rae Emmett! Spring break brought out many parents with their kids and a sprinkling of folks from out of the country and all seemed to be enjoying the day and sightings. We had approximately 80 passengers on both trips, but it sure seemed more crowded on the afternoon trip. The seas were calm and the sky was gray with a high marine layer. It made for great whale watching. The morning trip produced 3 gray whales and a large pod of common dolphin. Probably 800 animals. They performed for an excited group of passengers. On the afternoon trip we saw 5 gray whales. The first two were very shy and it took most of the rest of the afternoon to find the other 3. They did come close to the boat and were very proud of their flukes, much to the delight of the passengers. Linda is the bird expert, as I am still new at it. She was a great help and listed our bird sightings as: 3 white pelicans on the detached breakwater. Large flocks of Western Grebe and Pelagic Cormorants, Pigeon Guillemot, Rhinoceros Auklet, Common Murre, Common Loon, Surf Scooters, several Red-necked Phalarope (hope I got 'em all) On the back side of Anacapa there was several hundred sea lions hauled out on the beaches. Captain Dave Corey and Crew member Lisa Anderson commented on the unusually high amount. It was a great day but a cold one. I was glad I had a few layers on. A family of 7 from Valencia. Locals from Oxnard, and L.A. Captain Anthony and crew members Pancho and Bonnie (newly certified WW volunteer), who was acting as crew in the galley PM Trip: I did not go on the afternoon trip because my cold had gotten much worse, but I was happy to be onboard in the morning. The sea was calm and the sky was completely overcast the whole morning. At mid-trip, it started to drizzle, and visibility decreased considerably. The first Gray we encountered was very shy, so Captain Anthony headed towards SCI. At 11:20 a.m. we came up to a lone young adult feeding close to the surface. He dove a couple of times, treating us to great flukes. The rain had stopped, and visibility improved by the time we found the three Humpback whales, which were swimming in formation, with SCI as the background. They treated us to great flukes. At one point they came so close to the boat, that we could see down into their nostrils and hear their exhalation. We watched for about 15 minutes only, since we had to start heading back to harbor, The passengers seemed completely satisfied. Many of them had taken beautiful pictures of the whales, which they shared with each other. Overall it was a perfect morning out in the Channel. Maria G.
