Dear Volunteers,
AM Trip:
2 Gray Whale
3 Humpback Whales
~ 70 passengers (40 high school juniors from Utah). A family of 7 from Valencia. Locals from Oxnard, and L.A.
Captain Anthony and crew members Pancho and Bonnie (newly certified WW volunteer), who was acting as crew in the galley
PM Trip:
I did not go on the afternoon trip because my cold had gotten much worse, but I was happy to be onboard in the morning.
The sea was calm and the sky was completely overcast the whole morning. At mid-trip, it started to drizzle, and visibility decreased considerably. The first Gray we encountered was very shy, so Captain Anthony headed towards SCI. At 11:20 a.m. we came up to a lone young adult feeding close to the surface. He dove a couple of times, treating us to great flukes. The rain had stopped, and visibility improved by the time we found the three Humpback whales, which were swimming in formation, with SCI as the background. They treated us to great flukes. At one point they came so close to the boat, that we could see down into their nostrils and hear their exhalation. We watched for about 15 minutes only, since we had to start heading back to harbor, The passengers seemed completely satisfied. Many of them had taken beautiful pictures of the whales, which they shared with each other. Overall it was a perfect morning out in the Channel.
