The entire Connally family was on hand and hosting visitors aboard the Islander prior to the christening at 5:30. There was a lot of joyous his and herstory shared about the 45 year brainchild created by the late Bill Conally that connected local mainlanders to our Channel Islands. Food from local restaurants was aplenty, as were good wine and juice. Champagne became to beverage of choice with the actual christening by Mrs. Conally, the matriarch of the family, The crews and skippers of IPCO were honored as well at the time: all aboard their shinny new member of the Island Packers fleet! She has the same capacity of the other cats, but extra spaciousness aboard for the needs of passengers and crew is immediately obvious. Lolla Lynch , who handled the VC, and Jim Graves, who led the Road's Scholars hike on the island, were joining in the festivities as well. Don Mills was on hand as well, but rumors that he helped engineer and build this new addition to enhancing the Channel Islands National Park and Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary experience for all are not true. Remember One and All. Our annual CINC Rincon Park Sunset Picnic is coming on June 4th. Be there or be square! Details soon. On the morning trip we saw the California Sea Lions lounging on the buoy as we left the harbor. We soon spotted a small pod of Common Dolphins who stayed with us for quite awhile, giving passengers a lovely show. Shortly before returning to the docks, we spotted a cow/calf pair moving North along the Santa Barbara coastline. We were treated to a wonderful show of the juvenile spy hopping and partial breaches. We stayed with the pair for about half an hour before heading back to pick up the afternoon trip. The afternoon group got good looks at the sea lions on the buoy but after that we were unable to locate any whales or dolphins. The winds picked up a bit from the morning trip and passengers enjoyed a lovely day on the water despite the lack of sightings. We had great looks for a while which lead us to getting back to the dock at about 6pm. The quality of the sightings was amazing. Good views of the blue whale giving a fair idea of its immense size. However, view of one of the humpbacks was spectacular. The whale came over to the boat, went under it numerous times, spy hopped right in front of us, and showed every other immaginable behavior except breeching. Of course we had the benefit of their breath, close up views of the barnacles on them, their immense pectoral fins etc. A day to be remembered for a long time. Nice weather and water, despite some windy forecasts. Not too far out some lob tailing caught our eye and we visited *2 humbacks*- "rope" with a large rope entanglement scar across its back, and a companion also with a very distinctive propeller scar across its back. But both animals were fine and came over to say hello. We had *4 or 5 Dall's Porpoise* bow riding and escorting us a bit, and came upon about* 6 more humpbacks* out by the west end of Santa Cruz. They were a little ways off and we saw some action so headed towards *2 more humpbacks*, a cow-calf (young but not this year's) pair. The calf just could NOT stop breaching, rolling, pec slapping and came quite close, actually spraying us a bit with his breach! We had a smooth ride back and met up with *a few hundred Common Dolphin* outside the harbor who were as playful as always. The 18 passengers were happy, and so were Capt.s Dave and Scott. Rob fired up some mean quesadillas, while Rae and I "naturalist-ed" and Marilyn photo ID-ed. What more can you ask for? The essay was regarding watershed, waterways and oceans. An area of study in their curriculum. The students were most amazing to be onboard and to hike with. Their questions were thoughtful and it was obvious they not only listened to what was going on during the day, they have a zest for knowledge. We left the NPS dock in VTA harbor at 9:00 a.m. The male Steller sea lion we have been seeing recently was perched on the sound buoy. He was a hit with all onboard. Mid-channel we saw a feeding frenzy of birds, mostly western gulls, hundreds of common dolphins and a huge bait ball. Here we launched a plankton net for a vertical tow to look at later on the trip. Just before disembarking on the island, a Cal sea lion visited us, good time to discuss difference between sea lions and seals. Once on the island, we hiked the Cavern Point loop counter clock wise, starting near the V C. Right away we found a foraging fox, and later on the bluff part of the trail we encountered our second fox romping through the annual grasses. On the way back to the pier another fox was found resting under a huge lemonade berry bush! Back on board, we saw a mature harbor seal in the cove and mid channel we found another or the same feeding frenzy of birds, dolphins and...a mature humpback lunge feeding within 100 feet of the boat. We all got great looks of this beautiful creature. A fabulous day for all. Thanks to NOAA's Julie Bursek and Dani Lipinski for the opportunity. And, RESTORe grant. All about oceans for life. With Winds cranking up in the outter channel, Captain Dave informed the folk about to board that it might be a bit rough, and some did decide to pass on this trip. For those that did go, we had one of the best shows of Whale behavior to date. About two miles out we encountered our first Humpback, who gave us a few flukes but was really not too interested in entertaining, rather on a mission to get from here to there. Yet, with a little more cruising we came on another Humpback who was feeding at at bate ball along with some of the Common Dolphins. Here is where the show began, as this one was really into it circling and shallow diving, not showing much fluke. Then it began to come to the surface in some nice lunge feeding. It did this again and again. then near by we spotted two more at another school of fish doing the same. Dolphin were all over the place, and more whale pairs were attacking fish schools all over the place. We went from one to the other, viewing side rolls, pec slapping, racing to chase the fish, and lunge after lunge after lunge feeding all day long. For the photographers on board, plenty of opportunity to get some nice lunge feeding shots. A Mola Mola was sited near by as were some jellies, and it became a challenge to decide where to look, as you were looking at one species the other was doing something spectacular. All along the dolphin were cavorting with the boat and feeding. Dark patches of the sea all about showed the many schools of fish all around, including around the board. They were right at the surface, you could see them frantically darting about deep into the clear waters. Swish, swoop, splash, dolphin gulping prey her there and everywhere. The Humpbacks were in it to the full, trumpeting, spy hopping, lung after, shallow dive, after lunge after horizontal race right up against the boat, as those fish that tried to use us for protection, lost out on that bet. With that very cool brush of whale along side the starboard bow, we also got a very nice and lingering whiff of whale breath. We visited the whales, from school to school. We gave the the folks the full experience. The seas were not as severe as anticipated, yet that did not mean much as what was anticipated was to be big, and we intentionally did not go to the outter channel because of it. So we did have a few folks not happy with the motion of the ocean and taking up residence on the stern. Captain Dave di his usual fine job of finding and guiding us to the whales. Crew was Brook in the galley, Rob and Mike the engineer. Dino Dal bon was on PID joined in with Linda Taylor, for a full set of Naturalist on this trip. A pretty nice day of WW. About 8 miles out of the harbor, however, we came upon a single, adult, female Humpback feeding among a large number of Common Dolphin (500+). This brought a very quiet and not very happy crowd of passengers to life as we watched the Humpback for a good time surrounded by the many Dolphin. Everyone enjoyed the excitement. After the power point lecture most of them came forward to interact with us over the whale kit, and ask questions. We were all kept busy at the table handing out flyers about our Sanctuary and National Park. Only about one in 10 had been whale watching, and lesser ratio had been to the CINP. As usual, our audience was 95% California. However, one visitor from Holland was especially inquisitive about our closing clip on ocean acidification. He was pleasantly surprised to find out the research into it, and outreach about it, was NOAA sponsored. Leanne, the State Park interpretive coordinator, introduced everyone to the show with her own rendition of Home on the Range as a sig-a-long, with totally local beach exploration words. She played her guitar, and we all sang along to the words on the screen! We in turn, made sure everyone there knew what a great job the community of Carpinteria is doing with their local Harbor Seal rookery just a mile away. With the pupping season ending this month, local docents have counted a record 100 healthy pups ( a strange flip side to reports about California Sea Lion pups not doing so good this pupping season ). This was a pleasant surprise, considering the high absenteeism at the park due to high winds, local fires, and a morning earthquake centered almost directly under the campground! There was another slight screw-up by your's truly who posted flyers about the presentation that stated it was a Carpinteria State Beach! We had a great crowd, with almost half being 10-13 yr old Montessori students from Redlands. Bruce gave a great account of his last whale watch tour where-in he described classic near-boat Humpback lunge-feeding. Tara mesmerized the audience with her telling of the Chumash Rainbow Bridge story. Again, the concluding show-and-answer questions session at the whale kit table was a packed event.
