Hello Ocean Volunteers,
Today Captain Dave took all three trips out of Santa Barbara on the Condor. Tara Brown and myself were docents on the 9 a.m. and the noon trips, and Carolyn McCleskey was the Super PID on all three trips! A full boat in the morning saw a juvenile Grey and a mom and her calf cruising just outside the kelp line cruising west as far as Moore Mesa. We had 70+ kids from a charter school in Santa Barbara. They were delighted with the whole trip, and all passed the test to get off the boat by explaining the difference between a seal and a sea lion.
On the noon trip we had 28 passengers. We immediately sighted a mom and her calf after viewing the local sunbathers on the harbor buoy. We followed the pair up to the Goleta Pier, where viewers on the pier had a good look as well from only 25 yds away. Captain Dave than took us out about a mile, and we soon had an escort of 25 playful Common Dolphin.
Both trips were on a mirror like sea, and visibility into the water was excellent. The air temperature was warm, and getting warmer, and all were glad we were on a cool ocean. Paul Petrich
