Capt Dave and the CX Crew worked long and hard to find whales on Saturday for eager visitors from Luxemburg, China and Australia. The sea state was glass and the visibility ideal. We could see 25 feet into the water from the fly-bridge. If there was a whale with 3 miles, the CX we would have found it. Other naturalists were David and Karen Telleen-Lawton. We had very good luck using the new SpotterPro iPad application - it worked flawlessly. Even though we did not see whales, it was gorgeous day on the water. She let me enter data since she has used the app on her phone a couple times. It is really cool and fun to use. The app is very intuitive and easy to use. If you ever had any reservation about recording data this makes it more like a game then a chore. Granted it was a slow whale day so I'm not sure how it would be with 15 whale recordings and taking PID photos all at once. I had several entries of dolphins and also 2 separate mola mola sightings. It seems as though if it got really busy that having the assistance of one of the other naturalists would be a big help. One part I really liked was the comment section where you can describe certain things that happen during that sighting. The Ipad mini is very slow to charge. It was plugged in the whole day while using and still only went from 44% to 81% charge with 4 hours of charging. Today there were dolphins just about everywhere all day long. Multiple feeding frenzies with each being a little different. Some had 300+ dolphins and others had 50+ dolphins. We were never far from shore and could tell where we were in relation to shore the whole time. Each frenzy had a different variety of birds - most of the common sea birds like pelicans, different gulls and cormorants, but one frenzy had mostly elegant and least terns. One frenzy was full of sea lions jumping and chasing fish. Like the past few days the weather was stellar - one of the few days you did not need a sweater. The water was super clear all day too - one frenzy you could see the bait fish right next to the boat down maybe 30-40 feet. Unfortunately, a humpback didn't pop up in the middle from below. We saw 2 Minke whales for the day that were mixed in with one of the feeding frenzies of dolphin and birds. We even searched the area the pair was seen yesterday to no luck. It was an awesome day on the water with warm air, flat seas, and lots of wildlife - just no blues or humpbacks. Passengers were varied as usual from Europe to the weekenders from So. Cal. No one seemed disappointed since we were always watching something but Capt. Dave did give everyone a whale check. We may want to question how long has this been going on and to what intensity, among other good questions? Yet it is definitely something to watch. It is so very cool that each of us finding a little piece of information can pass it on to the rest of us, thus we all gain by it. Where each of us, alone, may find good info as we go along, but not have the resource of many more "eyes" sharing all the little pieces they encounter, as we have here, we would be limited in our knowledge growth to only our own research and discoveries. His dorsal fin looked very ragged. He appeared to be in poor health. Saw the same cow calf pair of humpbacks we have been seeing. Hal got a great picture of the calf's dorsal fin that has a nick in the middle of it. I thought we should name it Nicky because its good name for either sex. We had time so Captain Dave headed for the east end of Santa Cruz for the passengers to view. We started turning a little more east of the island and picking up speed. I was wondering if they had spotted another humpback when Captain Dave called me into the wheel house. He said he remembered in the nine year of volunteering I had never seen an orca, he then told me today might be my first. He was right we found 3 females on the hunt for sea lions. After I picked myself up after fainting we all had a whale of a time watching them hunting. About a half mile out a very large pod of dolphins started heading right where the orca were when all of the sudden the made a quick u turn. I have never seen them swim that fast. It's a good thing they have their own sonar system. Finally we saw the biggest of the bunch lunge at a young sea lion. We never saw the sea lion again. You do the math. We had one orca spy hop and some close ups by the boat. I was in seventh heaven. Captain Dave said he was glad he was my first( Captain to find me an orca that is!) The aquarium is at the center of an unprecedented captive-garibaldi population explosion: 71 newborns, no bigger than pinkie fingernails, with electric-blue spots on their backs. A year ago, most of those fish would have died in infancy. But new care and feeding techniques have dramatically improved their survival rate. ?We were getting about seven to 10 garibaldi from the roughly 1,000 eggs we harvest each year at a nest on the breakwater,? said curator Kiersten Darrow, until staffers came up with the idea of adding microscopic creatures known as rotifers to their menus, and rearing the fish in much larger tanks. Garibaldi, even as infants, are pugnacious, aggressively territorial creatures. With plenty of food morsels smaller than their gaping mouths and more space to stake out as turf, there have been fewer squabbles and injuries. ?Survival rates have soared,? said Mike Schaadt, director of the aquarium. In the garibaldi?s natural environs, only two of the roughly 5 million eggs a female lays in her lifetime reach adulthood. ?Life is tough for some organisms in the ocean ? they starve or get eaten,? Schaadt said. This year?s bumper crop turns out to be more than just a decade-long dream of swelling the ranks of baby garibaldi, which will eventually grow into bright orange adults the size of softballs. Schaadt says he plans to donate them to zoos and aquariums across the country as crowd-pleasing additions to conservation programs and research projects. ?I think we can raise up to 100 of these animals a year,? Schaadt said. ?We?ll give them to our colleagues elsewhere at no cost.? In Southern California coastal waters, the garibaldi population remains stable, a result of special state protections and incremental improvements in water quality, the legacy of state and federal laws curbing pollution, and the closure of marinas, shipyards and canneries that for decades spewed toxic chemicals, human waste and fish guts into the water. That?s a positive trend for the entire offshore ecosystem, including leopard sharks and mussels. Schaadt has made a lunch-hour ritual out of swimming to garibaldi nests he has discovered in submerged crevices on both sides of the breakwater. It takes him 15 minutes to reach nests he has been monitoring, and collecting eggs from, for about nine years. Schaadt, who has a state permit to collect garibaldi eggs and raise the frie, uses a comb to tease out about 1,000 eggs and carefully deposit them in a plastic bag for transfer to the aquarium laboratory. Sometime next week, the aquarium plans to put the word out: Garibaldi -- We got 'em! Marveling over a baby garibaldi hovering in a laboratory beaker, Darrow mused, ?Our ultimate goal is to help others use this colorful animal?s charisma and behavior as an entre into Southern California?s coastal ecosystems, and our state?s natural identity.? -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... We opted against an island visit, instead heading east to the "flats" off Summerland where humpbacks have been sighted recently. In the heavy fog, we encountered a mola mola and a couple of small groups of common dolphins, but soon we found our old friend Rope and a barnacle-covered companion. After about half an hour of feeding, they decided to put on a show. They didn't just mug the boat--they practically held us hostage. We were treated to an extravaganza of synchronized swimming and rolling, extensive spy-hopping, pec-waving, bubble blowing, and the closest encounters I've ever had in the Channel--right up against the boat. I actually had to caution passengers not to touch the whales! Needless to say, everyone on board was absolutely stunned and thrilled. After an hour or so, the whales punched their time cards and went back to feeding. On the way home we met a few more small groups of commons, and a lucky few on board caught a glimpse of an elusive Minke. Dave notes that there are at least five humpbacks in the area: Rope and her companion, the cow/calf pair that have been spotted a lot recently, and a lone whale. Bob Perry has very helpfully laminated two-sided color photos of Rope and other whale "regulars" for the naturalists to share with the passengers. It was extremely valuable to be able to show everyone Rope's distinctive scar behind her blowhole, so they could easily spot it for themselves. A truly exceptional day on the water! Ya, ya, you?ve read this all before. But it really was special. And, did I mention we were right off Summerland and Padaro Beach? No hour travelling out in the Channel on the hunt. There was plenty of food for all the pelicans, shearwaters, terns, gulls, common dolphins, sea lions as well as for the whales right there near shore. We could see those commons busily herding up the fish while the others partook in the feast. It was great to see all the action. We had lunge feeding, pec slapping, bubble blowing, fluking, rolling, spy hopping each a textbook example of what we talk about, and each behavior illustrated up close. Three pairs of humpbacks spread out over the area each put on a show, culminating with Rope and her pal?s unbelievable piece. The first pair were showing ?feeding behavior?, the second ?logging? and ?breaching.? The best came last; Rope and pal were ballerinas, showing off their grace and finesse coming within inches of the CX, twirling and swirling first on this side, then that. Yes, they spayed us with their ?perfume? and ?talked? to anyone who?d listen. Love the sound of the scattering anchovies (anchovy ?rain??) prior to breaking of the surface by open-mouthed humpbacks. There was a small motor boat that sped up to our area as we encountered Rope and pal to be treated to much the same action. The whales checked them out first, spyhopping inches away from the rail of their small boat. We all jealously watched the two men as they photographed their adventure with Rope and pal and were the center of their attention; but with a few graceful backstrokes it was our turn. And what a show. Sadly, after watching almost an hour with our engines idling, we had to leave this final pair and get back to port. I was particularly grateful to spend 9/11 in such awesome company. I always thought the figure was one third body weight. Over half - 65% well over a half - is a heck of a change. Has anybody heard this figure before? Maybe I missed it. Shirley I sent Shirley the following and it may be helpful to others interested in this question. Hi Shirley, As it turns out I was asked an interesting question in both 2011 and 2013. And ... the question was "What percentage of a whale's body is blubber?" I collected lots of data on that subject, both times. In neither search for the answer to this question, did I encounter any numbers higher than 40% i And ... it seems to me that if a whale is losing more than blubber (the other 25% that would add to 65%), it will be losing muscle, organ tissue etc. and soon it would be a dead whale. All of the above leads me to the conclusion that the 65% number is very questionable. (Please reply directly to me ... rather than the whole rain list ... if any of you want to discuss this issue any further. I can send data to any who want it.) Hope this helps, Valerie Olson -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Tara was aboard the Vision with the girls, and I aboard the Conception with the boys. This is an outstanding science class journey for graduating 8th graders done annually by the school's biology science teacher, Maureen Hill. Yours truly thinks she should get some kind of educational award for the implementation of this educational experience given to the kids! Captains Jerry and Graham landed us at SE Anchorage on SRI Thursday a.m. , where we hiked toward the pier; I taking a group on the Torrey Pines Loop, and Tara taking a group to the ranch area via Water Canyon Beach. We then spent the afternoon and eve anchored in a cove on the south side near Ford Point. There the kids had scheduled rotating sessions for snorkeling, kayaking, and lab work, exploring plankton tow water drops. Friday after breakfast, we went back to Bechers Bay for another hike from the pier. My group went out toward Water Canyon Beach and Water Canyon, and explored the camp ground area. Tara's group did the Cherry Canyon Loop. We both started with the ranch his-herstory stop. Highlights of our hikes were observation of a Mammoth fossilized bone in the cliffs on the beach at Water Canyon introduced by Tara through her previous discovery via Lissa of IPCO . One of my kids found a perfect Chumash arrow head at the canyon area near the camp ground which he dutifully left as it was found, after photos were taken. There, we also discovered fossilized clams in stone. This stop was a great transition to conclusions related to the ancient geology of the islands and to the Chumash culture: And to the mutual mission of the CINP and CINMS to preserve what our islands show us about the past. After the Friday morning hike and lunch, the captains took us to a cove by Punta Gorda just east of Painted Cave at SCI. We anchored there and the very capable crews of both boats ferried the kids all afternoon into the cave, all the way back 1215 ft. While the trips were going on, as an organized section of the afternoon program, other sections on each boat had a snorkeling and Lab session, as well as free kayaking time ( not into the cave! ). In the lab the kids dissected a perch ( caught by crew members in legal waters ). The snorkeling session here had proof of current and water temperature changes unique to our SB Channel by witnessing a lot of Garibaldi that were not present in SRI waters. After dinner the captains took us eastward to CINP waters and around Scorpion Anchorage to Smugglers, where we anchored for the night. The following morning, ( Sat) before breakfast, we were on our way to the south coast of East Anacapa Is. There we anchored, and the kids had a morning of just fun stuff kayaking and snorkeling. But, here the local sea lions seam to have fun, too. As they came out off of the rocks and warming sun, to frolic with the kids in the the water and one the kayaks. The captains and crews were excellent in educating the kids about not approaching the sea lions, but no one educated the sea lions ie visa versa. There was ample opportunity here to give our marine ecosystem message an airing as we do on the EA hike at Cathedral Point. MPAs were explained. Here Tara and I got to play as well. But, all was not finished! Upon heading homeward after lunch we circled to the north side by Landing Cove and the LightHouse, then headed across the channel toward SB. Half way out Captains Graham and Jerry spotted whales going our way! I counted three. Captain Graham thought they were Minke from his front boat, as they were not huge. However, their spouts were very straight, like a fire hydrant being tapped, and were higher than our boat cabins> When the rolled lazily along their blueish sea serpent like back exposed a small dorsal. I think they were juvenile Blues. It was a fantastic three days for all aboard both boats in our CINP and CINMS! All tolled, the kids identified 10 species of terrestrial and marine species of living creatures, once facing extinction, that they actually saw, now on the rebound in our CINMS and CINP due to Sanctuary and Park cooperation! The announcement dealt a heavy blow to the proposed gold and copper operation, which would produce some 10 billion tons of contaminated waste and threaten the greatest wild salmon runs on the planet. NRDC Members helped make this victory possible by deluging Anglo American with nearly one million messages of protest. The fight is not over yet -- we'll need new funding to ratchet up the pressure on the remaining companies behind the mine and win EPA action to protect Bristol Bay from large-scale mining. > > > Navy Refuses to Protect Marine Mammals from Deadly Sonar > The U.S. Navy says it will ignore a unanimous recommendation by the California Coastal Commission to reduce the harmful effects of naval sonar on the state?s marine mammals, which would violate California law. I arranged with Shauna to put it on the CX to use in PID until the original camera is returned. My plan is to get the replacement camera on the boat Saturday, Sep 28, so it will be there for Barbara La Corte on Sunday. (No Saturday PID so far.) Some notes: Batteries: I have two batteries and a charger which I will leave, unless they are interchangeable with the CINC camera batteries already in the case. I put my initials, DC, on the batteries and charger. Memory card: The memory card with my camera does not match the SD card used in the CINC camera. I don't have a spare. If the card is filled while you are using it let me know and I'll see to getting the card downloaded and returned to the camera. Lens hood: I don't know yet if the lens hood will fit on my lens. If not, you should still be able to get good-quality photos in most circumstances. Please contact me if your have questions or comments about the replacement camera. davidchubb at cox.net 805.569.5450 From dvabbott at verizon.net Fri Sep 27 13:24:44 2013 From: dvabbott at verizon.net (Don Abbott) Date: Fri, 27 Sep 2013 14:24:44 -0600 Subject: [CINC] BBC News: UN '95% sure' humans cause warming In-Reply-To: Message-ID: Hi Catherine, Thank you for all that you do. Interpretation is a constant learning experience and as Interps our goal should be to pass along truth vs. fiction. You've done nothing wrong, but I feel the need to respond to your IPPC's latest. Question: As a Scientist/Interp, what should my role be now, when I see false science being touted on RAIN? Perhaps I should write here: I saw this story and thought you should see it too: http://notrickszone.com/2013/04/17/ipcc-co-chair-thomas-stocker-flunks-major -swiss-interview-ipcc-science-hanging-from-its-last-thread/ Catherine, we are polluting our home, but clear thinkers (even a layperson) should be hard pressed to swallow 'Man Caused Global Warming' when the most recent 'Glacial Melt' began ~18,000 years ago. In the recent past I provided all with an opportunity to THINK/study and respond to my analysis entitled: 'CO2 A BREATH OF FRESH AIR ON THE SUBJECT'. For those who proclaimed and interest I'm still awaiting comments -- see below: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B1YE6Es3DHkkNi1FdTZEWTdaTXc/edit?usp=sharing If the above analysis is flawed -- please assist my learning. For Machiavelli "the end justified the means". Machiavelli was evil and I am not a proponent of false science being used to bring about social changes. Society is corrupted when truth fails to rule over falsehoods. Caution: THINK! All that is written is not truth; however, below is some food for thought. http://www.energytribune.com/79020/man-made-climate-change-arguments-dont-su rvive-scrutiny#sthash.Kzq3y7Eh.pWgNE1En.dpbs My best, Don On 9/27/13 9:02 AM, "Catherine French" wrote: > I saw this story on the BBC News iPhone App and thought you should see it: > > UN '95% sure' humans cause warming > > Scientists are 95% certain that humans are the "dominant cause" of global > warming since the 1950s, a landmark report says. > > Read more: > http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-24292615 > > > ** Disclaimer ** > The BBC is not responsible for the content of this e-mail, and anything > written in this e-mail does not necessarily reflect the BBC's views or > opinions. Yes, yes, ... we do have many a beautiful day out there, but today seemed exceptional, ranking right up there with some of the best. Warm, little wind, calm seas with gentle swells, and a goodly amount of Cetaceans showing up. Our first encounter with Cetacea, was east, past Carpinteria, a little less than five miles off shore. Here it was a cow/calf pair of Humpbacks, the younger being "Nick" the juvenile with the distinct nick in its dorsal fin. Mom was quite content to leave the youngster free to be between her and the boat. Perhaps it is well weened and ready to be sent out on its own, not too far away. Yet, they were logging, seemingly resting or sleeping, seriously so, for the longest time. They did nothing but hang out on the surface, occasionally blowing and not really diving much during this long, long break they were taking. The occasional dive they would take, they might pop up on the other side of the boat, and continue to just hang out on the surface, again, not doing much at all. This, of course, is what we call, "logging." Yet the folks were fascinated, as were we, as none of us had seen this logging behavior go on so long. Later, after the nice long observe of the "loggers," we broke off and headed further east finding several very small pods of Common Dolphin along the way. Very soon, we came on another single adult Humpback, who seemed to be moving along, not too quickly, yet definitely. Another, Humpback off in the distance, we suspected might be seeking to hook up with our, now, new one, to do some cooperative feeding. Sure enough, that was the case, much to the delight o the folks, many of whom were on their first Whale Watch. Then we saw another to the port side and another at about one o'clock (forward, on our starboard side). Grand total, 6 Humpbacks for the day, Nice!! Yet, with in this latter set of sightings, we also were entertained by was amounted to several Minkes. Yep, these were the shy types, right? Well not along for too long, but not exactly shy either. As usual, they were fairly quick, darty and hard to predict their next move,, yet the photographers on board got many a good shot of the Minkes. Again a very nice treat for those after some unique pics of Cetacea. The Commons were often, but few, yet, as they always do, provided much delight for the folks as they chased the pressure wave, surfed the wake, or just zoomed by along side. Yep, some babies were along them. On our return we saw our "loggers," up, awake and seemingly into a feeding mode. Finally, "White Tail" showed up, our all white tailed Humpback, who hangs out in the same area most often, and gave us a very nice fluke wave good by, as we were headed back to port, ... nice in deed!! Folks from Sweden, Germany, France, St Louis, MO, Michigan, South Carolina, and one couple came down all the way from Santa Barbara to ride the beautiful day into a great one, with many a sighting of Cetacea. Captain Dave, was skipper today with great and informative narration, with Captain Eric and Tasha handling the crew and galley duties. With not many of the guests feeling woozy, they did their usual fin job of getting us out there, finding the whales, and safely back. I was very fortunate to be riding with two beautiful young lady Naturalists in the form and presence of Carolyn McCleskey, who was handling the new iPad duties very well, and Debbie Shelly, chatting it up with the folks, showing pictures and sharing some of the toys. Always a pleasure, to be sure. Yours, Ken Tatro Gentle winds, mellow seas, and always, ? a fresh breath of salty air, ... to ya. A camper left a blue tub with the lid off with about two inches of water in it. The fox couldn't pass up the free water, he/she balanced on the edge of the tub, and was practically upside down, nose first. We spent about five minutes watching the fox! http://www.noozhawk.com/article/thirsty_fox_driven_to_drink_in_foothills_20130926 Calm Seas, Catherine French Writer, mentor, naturalist 805.570.0432 To have us to own, to share is to enjoy. We planted about 150 Coreopsis, Yarrow and Gum Plants on the north side below the camp ground. On the way out we were delighted by about 300 Common Dolphins. Seas were calm. Temp was warm and we had very little breeze. On our return Capt. Jason got a message that sharks were feeding on a dead whale near Platform Gail. They indeed were. We found them - a dead Minke Whale and at least seven Blue Whales! There is a short YouTube post under Bill Weinerth if you want to see some of the action. Thanks to Dani, Pancho and Capt.
