I work with a marine mammal rescue group and in the past few weeks we have seen quite a few Northern elephant seal weaners come up on shore. They are healthy but just tired and need to come ashore to warm up and rest. They return to the sea usually in 2 to 12 hours.
One sighting I left out of my Scorpion Hike report for the 17th was that of a seal pup swimming right up on the rocks at Scorpion while we were waiting for the boat to take us home. From the pier we saw this seal pup case out a large part of the beach, then decide to waddle up on rocks in front of the H S class of thirty, who were socializing and enjoying beach. They were very responsive to my eventual advice to back off from the pup, and look from a distance. But, how do we determine whether seal pups like this are juvenile Harbor seals as apposed to wandering Elephant Seals pups, as described by Peter Howsworth in the SB News-Press last week? Paul
