<b>Seventy
Years Ago on <st1:date year="1938" day="30" month="4">April 30, 1938</st1:date>
the <i style="">Los Angeles
Times</i> reported: </b></font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><b><font face="Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif"><o:p> </o:p>“<st1:place>Islands</st1:place>
Made Monuments – President Sets
Aside Geological Areas”</font></b></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif"><o:p></o:p>Portions
of the <st1:place>Channel Islands</st1:place> off
the <st1:place>Southern California</st1:place> coast were named as
national
monuments yesterday by President Roosevelt because of their geological
and
scientific interest. Included were 538 acres of <st1:place><st1:placename>Anacapa</st1:placename>
<st1:placetype>Island</st1:placetype></st1:place>, a group of three
islets, and
581 acres on <st1:place><st1:placename>Santa Barbara</st1:placename> <st1:placetype>Island</st1:placetype></st1:place>.
Certain lands on both islands also were reserved for use by the Bureau
of
Lighthouses.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif"><o:p></o:p>The
Presidential order described the islands as containing “fossils
of Pleistocene elephants, ancient trees and noteworthy examples of
ancient
volsanism [sic], deposition and active sea erosion in addition to other
objects of
geological and scientific interest.</font> </p>
