SANCTUARY BACKGROUND:
Designated in 1980, the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary (CINMS or Sanctuary) encompasses the four northern Channel Islands (San Miguel, Santa Rosa, Santa Cruz and Anacapa) and Santa Barbara Island off the coast of southern California. With marine boundaries extending from the mean high tide of the islands’ shores to six nautical miles offshore, CINMS spans more than 1,100 square nautical miles. The Sanctuary supports a rich and diverse range of marine life and habitats, unique and productive oceanographic processes and ecosystems, and culturally significant resources such as hundreds of shipwrecks and submerged Chumash cultural artifacts. This diversity, along with the busy Santa Barbara Channel, also brings significant human use and value to Sanctuary waters, including commercial fisheries, recreational fishing opportunities, marine wildlife viewing, boating and other recreational activities, maritime shipping, nearby offshore oil and gas development, research and monitoring activities, and numerous educational activities. For more information about the Sanctuary, log on to http://www.channelislands.noaa.gov/.

The Sanctuary Advisory Council (SAC) is a 21 voting member body that brings together community members and representatives from various government agencies to advise the Sanctuary manager and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) on management of the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary. With its expertise and diverse representation, the SAC offers advice on resource management issues and ensures that the Sanctuary manager has a wide range of viewpoints upon which to base management decisions. In order to better understand and address specific management issues, the Advisory Council extends its capacities by forming a variety of working groups. Working groups invite additional community members and experts to participate in the development of sound management advice for the Sanctuary. The SAC meets publicly every other month at locations throughout Ventura and Santa Barbara.

--
