Too cool to be real (in my opinion). I don't buy the explanation provided.

I checked out snopes.com, which is usually quite good at providing true/false analyses of a wide variety of stuff, including photographs of animals; but I could not find any evidence that they have looked at this one.

On the other hand, some weird stuff happens. I was on the Condor a couple years ago and we had a particularly playful Humpback. He/she would wave its flukes back and forth under water for us. Gave us a big burp of bubbles from far below us, etc., etc. The coolest of all was this: it was deep enough that we could not see the whale, but it apparently blew an air ring--a perfect torus (doughnut shaped) bubble that was 2 or 3 ft across when it hit the surface. (It was not a bunch of small bubbles arranged in a ring.) The cross-sectional diameter of the air in the ring was about 6 inches. (Exact dimensions may be off--it was a while back.)
Very cool.
