Hello
RAIN Community Internet
How Did It All Begin?
RAIN is one of the oldest Internet Networks in the United States. Beginning in 1990 planning was underway to establish public access points for use of the Internet.
This is back in the days when the Internet was text based and very different from today.
One of the main reasons behind the building of the RAIN Community Internet Network was to ensure access to new technologies for low income families,
youth and seniors.
That reason is as important today as it was in 1990.
As part of our work with technoloy and community empowerment we developed distance education and telemedicine prorams for 5 USDA Rural Utilities Service
grants between 1998 and 2002. RAIN brought Internet resources, plus classroom, afterschool and community health clinic resources
to 125 rural communities in the Southwest and California. The Camp Internet program has been used for Teacher Technology Skills training,
Public, Church and Charter School classrooms and afterschool centers.
has severed over 25,000 4th-12th grade students.
You can help keep this vision growing by subscribing to RAIN’s National Public Internet Network for your Internet access.
There is an alternative to super large Corporate Internet.
