Title |
The South Coast Watershed Resource Center - Program Updates |
Topics |
The South Coast Watershed Resource Center, located at Arroyo Burro Beach in Santa Barbara, was built at the request of the County. The SCWRC makes the connection between healthy watersheds and each of our own personal habits - such as cleaning up after pets, landscaping with native plants, and properly disposing of everyday chemicals. Other features of the Center include a native plant area, an ocean view deck, a wetlab for testing water samples, and a special area for the building of a tomol - the traditional redwood plank canoe used by early Chumash people. A research area open to the public includes two on-line computers and a small library.
On the South Coast, we have approximately 50 short, steep watersheds that start in the Santa Ynez Mountains, flow through the foothills and coastal plain, and ultimately empty into the Pacific Ocean. When it rains, large volumes of water quickly move through our watersheds - flushing pollutants and threatening to flood the people living in the natural flood plains. Managing this watershed to assure high water quality is an issue of primary concern to South Coast residents. The SCWRC was built to address and educate about our watersheds. |
About the Program |
Come join us on September 24th at the South Coast Watershed Resource Center at Arroyo Burro Beach. Karen Feeney, Community Program Director will give us a tour of the facility and update us on current conservation and education programs which include ongoing public outreach and school education and volunteer programs. Karen will emphasize how the unique green features of the building are used as an educational resource for all these programs. After Karen's talk, Darlene Chirman will lead a walking tour of the estuary and surrounding area. She will point out the restoration and bioswale projects, installed and planned. Mary Thompson will help us identify local birdlife. |
