There will be a talk and slide presentation of the Tree Swallow program of Ventura. In 1991, Jan Wasserman started monitoring 20 Tree Swallow nest boxes in Ventura County. She was trying to create new homes for displaced birds and also help fledge 50 baby Tree Swallows. The project has now been running for 14 years and has expanded from Ventura County to Orange County to L.A. and San Luis Obispo. In 2001, the project reached a high of over 1000 fledged Tree Swallows and is now at approximately 750 fledgling Tree Swallows in 2004. This project has uncovered new insights into the nesting behavior of Tree Swallows, documented nest site fidelity, and revealed details about the re-colonization of historic breeding areas. Ideally SBAS will be able to expand this wonderful project to our area and help return the Tree Swallows to the south coast of Santa Barbara. |
About the Speaker |
Jan Wasserman became a birder in 1986 and started a small monitoring project in 1991 in Ventura that has expanded to four counties. Santa Barbara County would be an ideal fifth county. |
