Title

Introduction to Birds of the Southern California Coast

Topics

Join Joan Lentz, Don DesJardin, and Peter Gaede for a slide presentation on their new book, just published by University of California Press. They will take you on an imaginary journey along the world-famous Southern California coast for a bird's eye view of the region. From San Luis Obispo County along the coast south to the Mexican border, an abundant avifauna has made this area a birders' destination for years.

Learn what species you can expect to see along our beaches and coastal wetlands, what habitats they frequent, and at which locations they can be found.

Books are available for purchase at the SBMNH bookstore and will also be available for purchase immediately after the presentation, however SBMNH discounts cannot be honored at the presentation. Bring or purchase a copy for autographing!

About the Speakers

Joan Easton Lentz, a long-time resident of Santa Barbara, has been a Research Associate with the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History and a teacher for the Santa Barbara Community College Continuing Education Division teaching birding classes. She is the author of Great Birding Trips of the West (1989) and Birdwatching: A Guide for Beginners (1985).

Don DesJardin resides in Ventura. He became interested in photography as a hobby while in his teens, and that hobby has expanded and focused ever since then. He has many photography and video credits, as well as software publications. Much of his photography has been integrated into artwork projects and electronic media. (Don's website)

Illustrating birds has come from a desire to combine studies in ornithology with art for Peter Gaede. Peter's undergraduate work focused on the nesting ecology and food habits of Flammulated Owls in Idaho, where he co-authored publications in the Journal of Raptor Research and the Journal of the Idaho Academy of Science. He from the Science Illustration Program at the University of California, Santa Cruz (2000) and is currently freelancing as a natural history/scientific illustrator. (Peter's website)
