Title |
Bird Paradise: Socorro Island |
Topics |
Socorro Island in the Mexican Pacific is an
unusual bird paradise. All the
terrestrial birds are endemic and extremely tame. Half of the
island is absolutely pristine; the other
half has been degraded and is in need of restoration. The once
common Socorro Dove survives
only in captivity today.
This lecture explores the island and gives an update on ecological restoration and dove repatriation projects that were initiated by the Commission of the Californias in 1988 and supported by local Audubon chapters. |
About the Speaker |
Hartmut Walter is an ornithologist and conservation scientist at UCLA who specializes in island biogeography. He is the author of an award-winning book on the rare Eleonora's Falcon and is actively involved in the Socorro Island restoration project. |
