Applications Now Available for Sedgwick Reserve Volunteer Program

As part of its outreach to Santa Barbara County residents, UCSB's Sedgwick Reserve, a University of California Natural Reserve Site, is continuing its docent training program for persons who love this unique environmental resource in the Santa Ynez Valley, and wish to share its treasures with others.

Training will begin October 19, 2007, and continue through February 22, 2008. Participants will study with highly qualified university faculty and other presenters, learn about the natural history of the Sedgwick Reserve, and how to share its outdoor wonders with others. The classes run Fridays from 9:00am - 1pm at the Reserve and consist of a lecture followed by field experience. Periodic, follow-up Saturday hikes, moderate to moderately-strenuous in nature, will be scheduled throughout the period.

Participants should be able to volunteer an average of 1.5 days per week for at least two years after the training course is completed. In addition to public outreach programs, volunteers are needed to assist with plant and animal collections, assist in the native plant nursery, catalog photos and slides, photograph the reserve, assist in site restoration and trail maintenance, and work in the office or on technology tasks.

For further information and a volunteer application, please call Sue Eisaguirre, Sedgwick Reserve's Outreach Coordinator, at 686-1941 or via email.
