
Act I, Scene IV
- Kent is disguised
- He hopes that he can serve Lear
in some way
- Lear talks with Kent (Not knowing
who he is) and is impressed with his straight forward answers
- Lear says Kent can serve him
- Lear asks Oswald where Goneril
is, Oswald ignores him and leaves the room
- Lear notices the increasing rudeness
- Lear requests the presence of Goneril
and the Fool
- Oswald comes back and is rude to
the King again
- Oswald is upset; Kent trips him
and pushes him out
- Lear pays Kent for this act
- Fool arrives and begins making
jokes about Lear's choice to divide the kingdom, etc.
- It is okay for the Fool to do this
because of who he is
- Goneril enters and comments on
the "all-licensed Fool"
- Lear questions why Goneril is acting
like this
- Goneril demands that Lear act his
age
- Lear calls Goneril a "Degenerate
bastard" and advises that he is leaving to live with Regan
- Albany tries to calm the King
- King wishes that nature would make
Goneril sterile, and if not sterile, he hopes that she has a terrible child
- Goneril dismissed fifty of Lear's
followers
- Goneril sent Oswald with a letter
to Regan
- Goneril condemns Albany for being
nice to Lear
