
Act V, Scene III
- Edmund enters with Cordelia and
Lear as prisoners
- Cordelia is concerned for Lear's
safety
- Edmund sends them to prison
- Edmund calls a captain who is to
do something terrible that will give him a lot of fortunes from Edmund
- Is the "something" to
torture and kill Lear and Cordelia??
- Albany, Goneril, and Regan enter
- Albany wants Cordelia and Lear
released
- Albany scolds Edmund for thinking
that he is his equal
- This is done when Edmund sends
them to prison without consulting Albany
- Regan defends Edmund
- Regan says that she has an illness
which makes her show all of her anger
- States intention of marrying Edmund
- Edmund tells Albany that he can't
change things any easier than Goneril can
- Albany declares Edmund and Goneril
under arrest for treason
- Albany then tells Regan that because
Edmund and Goneril are together, he and Regan should be together
- Albany challenges Edmund to a fight
- Goneril poisoned Regan
- Albany wants Regan taken to his
tent
- Albany continues with his trial
by combat
- Edgar enters (Still disguised)
and declares that he is as noble as Edmund
- Edgar and Edmund fight
- Edmund is mortally wounded
- Goneril says that Edmund is the
victim of treachery
- Albany shows the incriminating
letter
- Goneril doesn't deny the letter,
she says that she is the boss, not Albany, and storms out
- Albany has one of his men look
after her
- Edmund admits guilt to all of his
charges
- Edgar reveals himself to Edmund
- They both rejoice that justice
has been served between them
- Albany gives acolades to Edgar
for his work
- Albany never held a grudge against
him or Gloucester
- Edgar tells the story of how he
was a transient, met with his father and guided him and saved him from
himself
- Edmund likes Edgar's story and
asks him to tell more
- Edgar tells how Kent recognized
him and told him what had happened to Lear
- Gentleman appears and reports Goneril
killed herself after admitting to poisoning Regan
- Edmund is happy that the sisters
who competed for him will both be dead with him
- Albany wants the bodies of Regan
and Goneril brought in
- Kent appears and reminds Albany
of Lear and Cordelia
- Edmund says that he ordered Cordelia
hanged to look like a suicide
- Gives Lear his sword which will
prove to the Captain to stop the execution
- An officer hurries off to stop
the killing
- Lear returns with dead Cordelia
in his arms
- Lear is VERY upset
- Albany, Edgar, and Kent try to
console him
- Messenger reports that Edmund is
dead
- Albany tells Lear that he is the
ruler of Britain
- Edgar and Kent will be rewarded
by Albany
- Lear dies because he can't handle
Cordelia's death
- Albany tells Kent and Edgar that
they are now in charge of Britain
- Kent says that his master (Lear)
calls him and that he can't remain in this world
- He will probably commit suicide
