And the story usually goes, about someone in the family, for whatever reason, making the trip accross the Atlantic to the so called new world and starting a new chapter in an uncharted life. But what happens a hundred years or so later, when that past is all but gone? What happens to those who came later when they choose to look back?

Hello Damian
This is just a quick hello from another Gadal, our name is not exactly common, so I'm assuming we are related somehow.
If not, Hi anyways!

Hello again If you're intrested in finding more Gadals, look to southern Ontario Canada. My grandfather emigrated to Manitoba from France around the turn of the century and later moved to southern Ontario, He had sixteen children! So there's a fair number of us here now. I live farther up in the wilds of northern Ontario with my wife and two kids. Anyways, It was nice to hear back from you, I had no idea I had relatives in the states.

I sent him the question. Did your Grandfather happen to be named John? Will see if he answers. I think for sure he's grandpa's nephew. I wonder how old he is. I don't think John's family was in touch with Pops. Mom has written to some of the other relatives. Should be interesting. Mum

So I see your on-line, feel free to write the guy a note if you would like, I don't think he would mind, if not I can ask him if his grandfather's name was john....

I'm Damians mom-Therese'. He forwarded your latest E-mail. He thought I might have more answers than he did. He is quite pleased to hear from you. He would like to do more research on the Gadals. As far as I know there is only one family of Gadals wherever we happen to be.

Todd, not Ted asked me if I knew a Louis Gadal in California. I told him I knew two. One was my dad who passed away and I also have a brother. I told him my mom used to write to his mom and later he came back on with a message from his mom Margaret.
Mum

Sorry, this message is confusing to me...who asked if who knew a Louis Gadal in California, you or Ted?

Hi !!
Its good to hear from another one of us. My grandfather's name was Jean, but I imagine he went by John also. I have a sneaking suspicion that my grandfather was Damian's grandfather's brother (that's a mouthful) ! Do you know of a Louis Gadal in California? (Todd)

Well now we have Todd's mom Margaret in on the conversation. You may as well jump right in too. You've been quiet the last day or so. Mum

Hi Therese
I'm Margaret, Joe's wife. Yes, My father-in-law was Jean Louis Gadal. I do write to your Mom, but I'm sure I owe her a letter. I owe every one letters!! I work, and so can't do a lot of things like I would like to. please tell your mom I think of her often, and will try to write one of these days.
I never did get to meet your mom or dad, but did meet Aunt Jeanne and Uncle Buddy about 42 years ago, I also met Uncle Lucien.. Your mom sent me some info about Joe's family, but I don't know a lot of his dad's brothers and sisters. I don't know Aunt Marie. Would be nice to hear about your family. I am not on the Internet, but my son Todd is; he got in touch with you initially. He willl relay any messages to me.

Sure I know Louis Gadal. One was my father: Louis Antione Gadal. He died at the age of 84 five years ago, October. I also have a brother Louis Stephen Gadal who is an Archetectial Illustrator and a well known Artist who wins lots of prizes and shows all over.

My dad was the youngest. Lucien and Jeanne the other two youngest were here in California until I was a teenager. They have both passed away. Aunt Jeanne at 88 four years ago. Did you ever hear of Tonte Marie the oldest sister. She was little but a pistol. I remember when she chased my sister around the house with a broom.

Actually your grandfather was the 4th child of Jeanne Philomene Grall and Jean Yves Gadal. The two oldest died as children in France. The first was also Named Jean. But had a different middle name. Yves for his father I believe. A Jr. No less.

Your grandfather was Jean Louis Gadal born June 16, 1891 and dies March 27, 1948 at age 56. I believe from a heart attack. My dad loved to tell stories and often told how his older brother John, who was 19 yrs. his Sr. would always pick on him. He (my Father) became a professional boxer as a young man, and even though he was small 5'4" he was able to trounce John. Of course he didn't mention that he was in his 20's and John in his 40s at the time. He never could whip his papa though who knew Savat and at one time had been a gendarme in France. Lets see if I'm right-your Mom is Margaret and your Dad Joe and they live in Hudson. My Mum writes to your Mum. She is 85 now. Just had a Birthday in June but is sharp as a tack.

So are you close to Damian's age? He is 39. I have 3 other kids. Michelle' in Georgia, and Jeff and Yvette who live in Santa Clarita where I live. My old dinosaur of a computer won't accept pictures too well but Damian's will. I'll ask him to send a photo of himself and Guylene, his wife.

Were having a heat wave, in the 90's. So I am melting. I've chatted too much already. I'll look forward to hearing from you. Therese'

Well, let me say that at this point I have thought a lot about family and did some looking into where in France the family came from....

The map above is what I have found at this point....when I make it back to France I wish to visit this region....

For the time being, thank you for allowing me to share with you, feel free to return to see this saga develop....
