LEARNING THROUGH NATURE

Greenhouse and Garden Project

Michael Marzolla

The Learning Through Nature (LTN) Greenhouse and Garden provides youth with the practical experience of operating a full-sized greenhouse, lath house and garden under the guidance of experienced volunteers. The overall goal is to involve youth in a variety of activities which they design and run, and to provide them the opportunity to develop their entrepreneurial skills, to learn the basics of plant science, high-yield sustainable agriculture, ecological restoration and environmental sterwardship, as well as social and leadership abilities. In the process, they are also providing a valuable service to the community.

THE GREENHOUSE AND GARDEN

Located on the south side of the Santa Barbara High School campus, the greenhouse and garden site is provided by the School District. It includes approximately 2800 square feet of greenhouse, an equivalent amount of lath house and 6000 square feet of garden space. There is also a small office and tool room. The site is fully plumbed and has electricity.

WHO MAY PARTICIPATE?

Any young person between the ages of ten and eighteen is welcome to take part in the ongoing projects, or start a project of their own. Younger children are also welcome to participate in special group projects. Older youth and adults of all ages are welcome to assist as volunteers. Lack of experience is not a barrier, but an opportunity to learn by doing. Youth groups are encouraged to take part, and special projects can be designed for them.

PROGRAM FEES?

There are no program fees. There is a nominal accident insurance charge of $2.50 for individuals that are not covered by a participating organization. A description of this coverage is available.

WHO SPONSORS THE PROGRAM?

The program is sponsored by the 4-H Youth Development Program, part of the University of California’s Cooperative Extension Program in Santa Barbara County, which provides educational, technical and administrative support. Learning Through Nature also depends on the support of Santa Barbara High School, local businesses, the community college, university, government agencies and local non-profit organizations that donate their expertise, services and material. Grants and private donations also play an important role in supporting LTN.
