Configuring Dial-Up Networking for Windows NT 4
- Open (double-click) My Computer on the desk top. Open Dial-Up Networking (see Fig. 1).

Figure 1.
- If Dial-Up Networking is not installed on your machine, then you will be prompted with how to install Dial-Up Networking. Follow the instructions. You will also need your NT 4 installation disks. After you install Dial-Up Networking, you might want to run the latest Service Pack. You will have to reboot your machine after you install Dial-Up Networking.
- If/When Dial-Up Networking is installed on your machine, you will see the Dial-Up Networking window (see Fig. 2). If you have no phone book entries, a message will appear stating that your phonebook is empty. Click on OK to add a new entry. If you already have phonebook entries, then click on the New button.

Figure 2.
- Under the Basic tab, fill in the information as shown in Fig. 3. If you need to add an area code, check the Use Telephony dialing properties. The phone number should be your local ISP dial-up number. The example in Fig. 3 shows the Santa Barbara modem pool phone number.
Figure 3.
- Under the Server tab, fill in the information as shown in Fig. 4. Click on the TCP/IP Settings... button and fill in the information as shown in Fig 5.

Figure 4. Figure 5.
- Under the Script tab, be sure that None is selected (see Fig. 6).

Figure 6.
- Under the Security tab, select Accept any authentication including clear text (see Fig. 7).
- Under the X.25 tab, you should not have to change anything (see Fig. 8).

- Finally, click the OK button. You have created a phonebook entry for Rain. If you need to modify any entries, you can click on the More6
button and select Edit entry and modem properties (see Fig. 9).

Figure 9.
- To complete your Rain phonebook entry, click on the Dial button in the Dial-Up Networking window (see Fig. 2). You will get a "Connect to Rain" window as shown in Fig. 10. Fill in your user name. Your user name must be preceded by "ppp:" as shown in Fig. 10. Fill in your Rain password. Check Save password if you want your password saved. This is so you don’t have to enter your password in each time you log into Rain. Click the OK button to log onto Rain.

Figure 10.
- Near the clock on your task bar (see Fig 11), double click on the telephone icon. This will bring up the Dial-Up Networking Monitor window as shown in Fig. 12. If you are having problems logging on, check to see that your user information is filled in correctly such as your user name (be sure it is preceded by "ppp:" as shown in Fig. 10) and that your password is filled in correctly (password is case sensitive). If you need to reenter your password and you clicked on Save password, you must go to the Security tab under Dial-Up Networking and click on the Unsave password button (see Fig. 7). If you are still having problems, check the Dial-Up Monitor window. Under Device errors in the Status tab, be sure that the number of CRC errors is less than 3. If you have excess CRC errors, then you must force your modem to connect at a slower rate. This can happen if you are using a 28.8k or 33.6k modem. Usually setting your modem connect speed to 26.4 kbaud will be sufficient.

Figure 11.

Figure 12.
- To force your modem to connect at a slower rate to Rain, you will need to refer to your modem manual for the command to set your modem connect speed. To set your modem connect speed, select Modems from the Control Panel. Select your modem and click on the Properties button (see Fig. 13). Select the Connection tab and click on the Advanced button (see Fig. 14). Fill in the modem connect rate string in the Extra settings box as shown in Fig. 15. The setting shown in Fig. 15, at&n13, is for a US Robotics modem. Your modem will probably require a different command from what is shown.

- One last thing... to connect to Rain, you must open up My Computer then open Dial-Up Networking, then select Rain, then click on the Dial button. Too much button clicking! You can create a shortcut for this activity by opening Dial-Up Networking, selecting Rain from your phonebook entry, clicking on the More6
button, and clicking on Create shortcut to entry (see Fig. 9). Select where you want to place your shortcut and click the OK button.
