Brown Pelicans

The brown pelicans live in North and South America.  They are listed as an endangered species, but are now making a come back.  The eggs of the brown pelican were damaged by the pesticide, DDT.  The poison caused the shells of the eggs to be very weak, and the embryo did not develop into a baby brown pelican.  The brown pelicans got the DDT because the pesticide was used on crops, and then the poison was washed into the rivers.  The brown pelicans ate the fish that lived in the polluted water.  When the pelicans laid their eggs, the eggs were very thin.
The brown pelicans have found a safe place to lay their eggs on Anacapa Island.  We saw many flying over the island.
