First Ladies

Karpeles Manuscript Library
Exhibit, Shreveport, Louisiana

October 1, 2008 - December 29, 2008

From its formation until the time the of the United States became a superpower nation, First Ladies with different backgrounds and different personalities have found ways to support their husbands, raise families, represent the US, greet and entertain domestic and international guests through times of peace and times of war. Shown in this exhibit are handwritten letters from most of our early First Ladies that reveal the mundane to world events of enormous gravity.

Usually our exhibits contain "high spots". However, in this case, such would detract from the purpose of the exhibit. Thus, both Martha Washington and Martha Jefferson are not represented. In addition, the most recent First Ladies (after Eleanor Roosevelt) are also not included in the exhibit.
