Cleft lip and palate is one of the most common congenital malformations present at birth. Its incidence is approximately 1 in 800 newborns. Cleft lip is separation of the two sides of the upper lip and the cleft palate is an opening in the rook of the mouth.

Cleft lip and palate deformities occur very early in pregnancy and are caused by a combination of genetics and environmental factors. Cleft lip and palate deformities can run in families.
