Repair of the cleft palate is usually preformed around one year of age. By closing the hole in the roof of the mouth (cleft palate), the child is able to swallow liquids without having the liquids regurgitate back through his/her nose. Also, by closing the hole in the floor of the mouth, this forms the basis of the child's development of normal speech.
