Reduce Barriers to Immunization



	Physicians: Help Reduce Barriers to Immunization Assess immunization status at every visit! GIVE ALL CURRENTLY DUE VACCINES AT SAME VISIT! It's safe and effective. It's recommended by AAP, ACIP. It's cost-saving. It speeds protection of children. Train your staff! Post reminders, notices, and protocol charts in every screening and immunization room. Review immunization schedules, guides to contraindications, and screening questions with fellow staff. Have good references handy. Have appointment staff always say: "Bring child's immunization record." Keep clinic's record in front of child's medical chart. DON'T MISS AN IMMUNIZATION OPPORTUNITY! Missed opportunity: Child in clinic for other reasons, immunization status not assessed; no immunization given. Solution: Assess at each and every visit! Missed opportunity: Child in; immunization status is assessed; but child not immunized for incorrect reason. Solution: Trained staff! Reduce staff time, reduce patient waits! Reduce staff time: Designated RNs, LVNs, PAs, etc screen/immunize per standing orders. Reduce patient waits: Allow "walk-in" visits and express service for children needing immunizations only: "to see nurse for immunization/skin test." Communicate with your patients!
