Physicians: Help Reduce Barriers to Immunization

Assess immunization status at every visit!

  • GIVE ALL CURRENTLY DUE VACCINES AT SAME VISIT!
  • It's safe and effective. It's recommended by AAP, ACIP.
  • It's cost-saving.
  • It speeds protection of children.
  • Train your staff!

  • Post reminders, notices, and protocol charts in every screening and immunization room.
  • Review immunization schedules, guides to contraindications, and screening questions with fellow staff. Have good references handy.
  • Have appointment staff always say: "Bring child's immunization record." Keep clinic's record in front of child's medical chart.
  • DON'T MISS AN IMMUNIZATION OPPORTUNITY!

  • Missed opportunity: Child in clinic for other reasons, immunization status not assessed; no immunization given.

Solution: Assess at each and every visit!

  • Missed opportunity: Child in; immunization status is assessed; but child not immunized for incorrect reason.

    Solution: Trained staff!

  • Reduce staff time, reduce patient waits!

  • Reduce staff time: Designated RNs, LVNs, PAs, etc screen/immunize per standing orders.
  • Reduce patient waits: Allow "walk-in" visits and express service for children needing immunizations only: "to see nurse for immunization/skin test."
