Zouave Officer
1. Print out this design. (Click Here). Put a few drops of glue onto a piece of scrap cardboard and use it with a toothpick to make this model.
2. Cut out zouave officer and his sword.
3. Fold him forward in two along the back. Fasten halves of head together with a tape loop and glue the nose and chin together with a bit of glue on a toothpick.
3. Cut the trousers away from the coat a little in the front and back and then roll the trousers in and fasten with a tape loop. Bend frock coat around and overlap at belt buckle. Tape or glue in place. Bend base loop around the front and staple or tape together. Put creases into the base loop straight down from the shoes at the toes and the heels.
4. Fasten the arm halves together with tape loops at the upper arms and forearms. This will allow you to bend the arms into realistic positions. Glue the arms onto the back, even with the shoulders. Tape also works. Put realistic bends into the elbows shoulders and wrists and then tape or glue the pistol halves down in his right hand.
5. Make the sword. Just cut it out, fold it over sharply, and add a smear of glue. The scabbard folds up. The hilt folds down. Glue or tape the straps to his belt. Everyone I know who has worn this kind of sword rig hates it: it constantly bangs into the leg and knocks over stuff. The left hand is almost totally devoted to holding on to it to keep it out of trouble. So posing your model with the left hand on the scabbard would be very realistic (see photo).

Our zouave officer is a 2nd Lieutenant as denoted by his shoulder boards and frock coat. Higher ranked officers could wear the double-breasted frock coat. A first lieutenant had a single bar in his shoulder board. A captain had two bars.
